Umbra Wolves - a DYI chapter

As I promised in my greetings topic, I will share a few pictures of my first painted Marine. I haven't been painting for about four years, and just recently got back into the hobby, so this is not the quality that I'm aiming for. Still, I'm not talented at painting, so everything I know is obtained via trial and error ;). Ok, enough of my blabbering for now, here are some pictures.

I would like to know what you think about the color scheme. And I'll highly appreciate C&C :).

Its hard to tell what the other color is. I can distinctly see some green. It looks like quartered DA green and dark grey? Your painting is clean and solid, I can see the highlights of the green but not the other color. It might be the pic but if you were closer in that might help too.

Keep it up though!

The base colors are: Dark Angels Green and Adeptus Gray. The first one followed by Snot Green and Goblin Green, and the second by Codex Gray and Skull White (a friend of mine suggested adding Space Wolves Gray between the CG and SW). I'll try to get a closer pic, but it might be a bit hard because the xenos tech known as 'My Father's Camera' didn't want to focus if I put it even an inch closer.

Right know I have two more minis to paint, then I'll order some more. But as I have a surgery scheduled on Monday I don't know when I'll be able to paint them.

And another question: Does this color scheme make sense? Or is it totally dumb and I have to invent another one?

Thanks for the nice words :D. If practice makes better, I'll improve over time, and maybe I start to like my own paint work.

Honestly you may need to go the the BnC's Space Marine Painter and put a picture of your color scheme here. The picture is hard to tell what is what really and a clearer picture made with the SM painter would be nice to judge off of.

I've done it before ("painting" it in the Painter), but the image got lost in the depths of my hard-drive, so I've just make another one. In theory the scheme is like this:

hmm, very interesting. I like it actually because it is so different then the norm. My only thing would be to break up the grey a bit more since it is very over-powering. This could easily be done by making the soft armor and the little pipes and gizmos black. As of right now it looks like your dumping it into grey then painting some green. Now that I see this the model does look very good and the detailing is very good but as I said before maybe some black would be nice.

Remember these are your guys at the end of the day so do whatever floats your boat. ;)

The shoulder-pads, the aquila (on the mini, not on the SM Painter scheme) and the soft armor stuff is generally Boltgun Metal. But I'll make the pipes etc. black (with highlights of course :P) on the next mini, just to try it out.

Also I'll have to think about the company and squad markings, but I'll left that worry for the time I actually get my hands on some more minis. The thing that I'm sure of is that this little fellow is going to be in one of the Reserve Tactical Companies ;).

  • 9 months later...

<Takes a sip of energy from the Warp and yells> From the Abyss I bring you back!

After a couple of months I have finally painted something new. The delay is mainly due to my arm surgery (getting the whole joint reconstructed) and the fact that the last thing did before going to the hospital was painting miniatures... Which resulted in linking this action to pain and inability to move my arm. Also, I was quite worried about my brush control.

But finally I managed to paint another two marines, and I can post a few photos of the three I have thus far.

But as I was painting I realised that actually I don't like the scheme. It's too dark (it shows on the photos). I got a new one and the next models will be painted this way:

I do have a shedload of SM's waiting for paint, as I bought AoBR right after I could touch my face (which was a month and a half or so after the surgery). Hopefully I'll manage to start working on them tomorrow :).

It seems that my father's camera hates me, or I'm simply too dumb to use it properly (actually both at is also an option). Either way I'm unable to make a decent picture of my minis by myself.

Yet still, I tried, so I have a photo of a new wip test model both with and without flash:

The green parts of the power armour are finished, but it turned out that I don't have a blue sufficiently light to be visible as the highlight. I don't trust my mixing skills, so I won't event try to do it myself as it's deemed to be a total and complete failure. As hopefully can be seen the primer used is a white one, because I ran out of black (well, actually two days after priming this fellow I bought myself a new black spray, but as the marine didn't turned as ugly as I thought it would I suppose that I'll stick to the white with this army).

When I get myself a decent light blue (gotta check what GW now has in their offer) I'll finish up this one and post the painted Marine. I do hope that this time I'll be able to finish more minis painted in the same colour scheme.
