My Upcoming Chaos Army

Hi B&CS,

I've been browsing as a guest for a while now, and figured i may as well register and maybe pick up some advice that's a little more tailored to my specific work instead of browsing to try to find examples that I can liken to myself. Generally, I would want to do the latter, but when it comes to custom things.. it's just not quite the same. Here's some starter pics so I can give everyone an idea of where I am on a scale of newb to pro.

I am sorry for everything that makes these pictures "less than perfect" from a photography point of view. These are painted the "cannon" colors because I feel it is my obligation to maintain the artistic integrity of the models as they are intended. (Fluff and philosophy) I don't think I have the right to change what was created by someone else, and the codex seems to make it fairly clear that these units belong to their respective legions almost all the time. Not that I'm above being arrogant, but I think if I want to stick to the storyline given at all, I need to just go with the "temporary chaos united" theme to make a diverse army rather than forcing my ideas into the lore. Mind you, I'm not condemning those who do. (/fluff and philosophy)

Once the viewer is satisfied with the skill or lack thereof shown above, here is an example of the part of my army that will be a bit more personalized, which is basically all but the 4 specific troops. The army is not going to be particularly devoted to any god, as I find that distastefully limiting when it comes to strategy. Please make all angry faces now, but under the current (5th ed) codex.. well I don't necessarily like the way it's set up.

Here is my concept for the color scheme that I would follow given the prince, and the following army's obvious reverence for their fearless leader. This is also very open to suggestions still, as I've not gotten too far into painting the units other than the big badguy himself and the legion specific badguys. Other ideas I'd been tossing around is using a lot of white instead of the black (glances at the "Ice Marines" post), or using the off-white of the claws.

My painting is going very slowly, because I try too hard to get it all perfect, but I am contiguously working on them at the rate of roughly 2 models a week.. if it's not a HQ or something equally awful. I have a few more models worth posting, but I'll have to do that later, since I don't have the pictures handy.. and I intend to update.

I will try to update future work, which will hopefully get better and better based on critique provided.

Hey Zyl! =)

The demon prince looks cool great =)

I dont really have much experience with painting green. However for the red i'd suggest a wash to shade the recesses. As you may or may not know, GW are currently changing their entire paint range. I've heard great things about the new red wash called "Carroburg Crimson". You may want to try it when the new paints are released. Same with the gold. Use a brown wash. Washes are designed to shade, and give depth to the miniature.

I have seen people suggest washing before, but I'm actually not sure what it's supposed to achieve. Is it a darker color that goes to the edges and recesses, or a lighter color that pools at the top? I don't use any of the overpriced GW paints, which means all my colors are mixed by hand. I'm an experienced painter, but my experience all applies to canvases that are larger than an entire army, so it's give and take helpful with minis. I suspect it is a darker color to darken the recessed areas, which brings up a whole new problem because the red and gold areas on the berzerkers are large and flat, which (in my estimation) means the washing will end up looking flat and have no effect other than to change the color uniformly.

If anyone can help clear this up, I would be quite grateful.

You got it right: the wash is a darker shade that will flow off the raised areas of the model and pool in the cracks/crevices. It really can be used to pretty impressive ends, especially if several very dilute coats are layered on top of each other.

More progress, but not necessarily of better quality. The washes still don't look all that good on the solid plates, and while I don't know that I can solve that immediately, I did attempt to get a few good washes in opportune spots such as the axe handle for the right fella, the face/mouth of the skull champion, the plasma casing on the plasma pistol, and the bullet racks on all 3. The photos still aren't anywhere close to detailed enough to really show every mark, but maybe that's working in my favor for now. I also haven't gotten to the point of highlighting the armor plates, which will really make a big difference, but I await better brushes, since I sort of ruined one or seven already (no thanks to you, Wal-Mart).

The other thing I've gotten done is some modeling, which I don't need brushes for. Obliterator conversions!

My first: Tinman

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u75/bloodlife72/tinman2.jpg

Second: Brutus

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u75/bloodlife72/brutus3.jpg

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u75/bloodlife72/brutus4.jpg

And the highly experimental: Skorp

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u75/bloodlife72/skorp4.jpg

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u75/bloodlife72/skorp2.jpg

Tinman and Brutus are mostly terminator bitz with green stuff. Skorp was very assorted bitz and green stuff.. even the base was cut and made up for him. I primed them for the pics so the shape would be more easily focused on. I personally think it's easier to look at when there aren't as many distracting colors all over.

More to come later, tips always welcome.

also, for the daemon prince, instead of line painting the musculature, as with the berserkers id use Asurymen Blue (or a watered down bit of what you used to line-paint it, since you said you dont use GW paints {fair enough, i understand what you mean bout overpriced. lol]). i think you will like the results better.

Hello again internet,

So I went back to the berzerkers to try and improve based on previous suggestions. Here's what I came up with after washing, highlighting, and some flocking. The only thing that may be missing is weathering, which I'm actually not sure on at this point due to the "worn" look that he seems to have. Either way, any comments (be they good or bad) are welcome. At the very least I'm sure most can agree it's improved upon.

thank you

This weekend I started a project that I've been planning for a bit, and I started to get a bit excited as it progressed. Needless to say, I ended up dedicating quite a bit of the weekend to this particular conversion project, and though it may be a bit before I can finish it up completely (due to both a perfectionist attitude and the fact that I have to work for a living), I figured I'd post up a few pics. This is still in a very much evolving stage, so strong feedback is likely to have an impact.

It's a demon prince conversion made to look as if he's landing from above. A picture is worth 1000 words, so I digress.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u75/bloodlife72/105_7058.jpg

angle is a little off for the effect, but it was quick picture taking

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u75/bloodlife72/105_7059.jpg

In the rest of these pics, you can see the shoulder pad that I made to add on later.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u75/bloodlife72/105_7057.jpg

And the back is still more or less just basic musculature shape. I still intend to add wings and spines. Good thing I bought plenty of the green stuff.

Please say you hate it if you hate it. It's not like I know where you live :P

Welcome to Chaos, first off. I'm glad to see you've taken up the suggestions regarding washes - I would say one thing about plain boltgun metal though (or whatever color has since replaced it - I haven't had time to go and check out the new paints): badab black (or whatever the equivalent is nowadays) does a nice job of filling in the recesses of anything that comes across as too uniformly shiny. It will dull down the shine, though, so you might have to experiment to see what works for you. But I find it tends to make the guns look less uniform, and a little more worn.

I saw the first pics and thought "wow, good go for a beginner", then saw the highlighed Berzerker and was thoroughly impressed! I've never been a fan of two highlight levels on troops as I don't feel they need to "pop" that much but it does look absolutely fantastic!

And for those obbliterators... I am blown away. Your greenstuff and modelling skills are amazing. I am very jealous!

I figured I should update this with what I've done so far. It's been a while. I painted my oblits and took pics decent enough to be worth posting. I'll have some more pics soon, since I have a good bit more work to show, but for now it's late.

hehe, just vowed him for the ETL. He'll be painted soon enough. In the meantime, some good pics of my finished chosen squad.

prince update

The painting is pretty much done, possibly some high lighting could yet be done, and the base isn't flocked, but this is how it's pretty much going to look.
