The Imperial Fists of the Dornian Heresy

Recommended Posts

My Chaos army has found a proper paint scheme, that of the Dornian Heresy Imperial Fists. I intend to make the entire army something of a sampler platter for the Dornian Heresy as I will have Raven Guard as Tzeentch marked Raptors, White Scars as my Slaaneshi Bikers, Blood Angels as my Plague Marines, and Space Wolf Khorne Berserkers (of which a pack of ten are part of my initial vow). I went over most of this in the army list thread, but I reiterate it here for convenience.

I am thinking of adding a Dark Angels Chaos Lord or Sorcerer as well, probably a Ravenwing biker Lord, as an "advisor" of sorts pertaining to Daemonic matters to round out the Traitor Legions, since the Iron Hands and Salamanders really seem to have no interest in working with the other Legions. I have a Brass Scorpion in desperate need of a painting, but as only Codex units are allowed, it will probably languish a little longer. Well, good thing for now as I haven't the foggiest as to how I want to paint it. Red and brass might be nice, but then it will look more a part of my Blood Angels. Gray to match the Space Wolves seems like a good idea until you realize I have a Death Korps of Krieg and Red Scorpions army, both of which are gray. Perhaps mostly brass with a brighter red than the deeper shape I think I'll use on the Blood Angels. Not sure, but it can wait; like the wise man says, "never do today what you can put off until tomorrow."

I really like painting the thorned vines that creep along their armor, it is a nice diversion from the monotony of chain painting layers of yellow, or gray if I take a break to get a few Red Scorpions done here and there. It is also nice as I'm not coating the entire model in layers of colors and washes before painstakingly picking out details, instead I get to go pretty much haphazard all over the model with it. I am kind of looking forward to the Imperial Fists Rhino I plan to add as I can really go to town, twisting and winding the vine through larger insignia and can even have larger portions that I can entwine with smaller parts. Still, I must first complete the models at hand before I break out more.

Now here is the initial project offering.

These four came before I made my vow, so they do not count.

Here are the six Imperial Fists that are part of my vow almost ready to be painted, two bits need to see brake fluid, others just a base coat.

Here are two of the vowed Imperial Fists completed (left most two) included with the other four. See if you can't pick out the parts from the above picture.

Update time. My Space Wolves just got seven of their vowed ten mostly done. I also have all but the two of the Imperial Fists, one with the missile launcher and one with the meltagun, finished as well, but I forgot to snap a picture of them, so when I finish the vow, they will be in the group picture I'll take.

Most I could tear apart, so sadly my plan to mix the Khorne Berserker and Space Wolf boxes failed. I will however add a Space Wolf power claw to the guy without the arm since his weapon went missing and I can get another three more wolf styled ones in somehow to round off the vow.

http://s17.postimage.org/s83wqg5rz/Space_Wolves_prep_01.jpg

I did not yet paint the scavenged power armor parts as I decided that they will earn it. As I play other people and lose Berserkers, I will repaint portions according to the armies I face, converting the regular paint schemes into Dornian Heresy ones as appropriate. I think it will be a far more fitting way to factor in the haphazard salvaged parts than if I just picked them at random.

Now because I am so close to being finished with my initial vow, I took pictures of the Raven Guard Raptors and the non-Dornian Heresy Iron Warriors I will add in a follow up vow. Call it a preview of coming attractions.

http://s18.postimage.org/6772jxza1/Raven_Guard_prep_01.jpg

The top three Terminators and the Sorcerer have more than just some boltgun metal slapped on them, so they will be a no point portion of my follow up vow, but I will include them anyway as a "freebie," if you will.

Just finished my vow. The below photo is the whole group. I will hold off on declaring my follow up vow as I still need to make sure I have a few bits so I'm not scrambling to find or buy them to complete my real vow.

I love the fact that someone out there is actually representing the Dornian Heresy in model form. The sudden possibilities for fantastic-looking models are endless. And so I love what you've done here. But beyond all that, I'm glad that your follow-up vow is simply enormous. Pantheon knows, the CA subforum could use that boost. Good luck to you!

Great work so far, I am excited to see those raptors finished. Did you happen to have a ton of old models lying around, or are you getting them second hand? I've ben trying to find affordable RT era CSM for ages, as I think they'd make fun additional characters, but the prices have always been unreasonable.

I got these quite some time ago; a few of them were new releases when I got them, others were eBay deals from years ago like the Berserkers. The Rhino was actually from the Battle Company box set, thus Loyalist, but I acquired a couple of Chaos vehicle sprues making the origin moot. I still have more Chaos stuff and if this part of the vow is completed with time enough to spare, I'll add more. This vow just gives me an excuse to put paint on some of the models I've been acquiring since '89 and desperately need a painting.

Minor update. I have not done too much in the complete category as I've been all over the place with the painting. I finished the interior of the Imperial Fists Rhino and hit the exterior with the first coat of yellow, but have gone no further. The Imperial Fists Sorcerer with the plasma pistol has also gotten a slap of Iyanden Darksun and the Raptors have gotten only the black of their armor done, but not the highlights to finish it. The Night Lords did not get base coated and the Brass Scorpion has found a little Space Wolf insignia, but also missed out on a coating of Fortress Grey today due to my desire to hide from the excessive heat and a strange notion that using an airbrush in the house is a bad idea. Still, I've got time and am making good progress through the Chimera box that houses my vow.

Before I continue, I must apologize for the dark pictures; I am not using my camera and I cannot figure out how to change the settings that were messed with recently. Complicated digital witchcraft, 35mm cameras are better, although I need a working scanner before I start snapping pictures for this with it.

My two Space Wolf Khorne Lords are done. Like the packs, they too will earn blood splatters and armor parts as they prove themselves.

Here are my WIP characters that have some progress. Ragnar the Betrayer is getting there, although I need a Khorne icon for his chest, but I took a break from him to add some Dark Angels as I wanted a change from my usual gray (I have Krieg and Red Scorpions remember, so I paint a lot of gray). The familiar hasn't been started yet as I have some ideas on making him so both he and his base can go on a pretty scenic 40mm that can perhaps double as an objective if I'm not using him. I'm not sure yet.

I was going to go back and clean up the robes, but the more I look at them, the more I like the dirtied look they currently have. The banner's coloring also looks much better than in the picture and I plan to paint a Chaos Star in it. I am not sure if I want a fancy eight pointed star or if I want to make it simpler and add a Dark Angels motif to it. I am leaning toward the former due to the fact he already screams "I AM DARK ANGELS, HEAR ME ROAR." The biker Sorcerer I am particularly pleased with the minor conversion as it really blends the Ravenwing and Chaos themes together and only required one cut to make it work (the banner to angle it back and ditch the base), although the front plate didn't stick properly the first couple of times I tried to glue it for some reason.

Minor update as I lost plenty of steam this week after Games Workshop hurt my local gaming store as well as quite a few other independent retailers so I am quite angry with them. So much so I also canceled my trip to Chicago as I am not going to Games Day now.

Anger issues that make even Khorne say "that guy needs to relax a little," I have done all I can on these guys for the moment. The Dark Angels Chaos Lord in the center had a few minor touch up here and there that are so subtle I doubt they even show in the picture. Ragnar the Betrayer, however, still needs his chest icon and a backpack, but I am fishing for the plastic pack with wolf heads at the moment. I am almost certain I have a spare one floating around at the moment, but I am nearing the point I will steal it from my proper Space Wolf army. I will also need to order a Banners of Rage 2 and find a current Chaos backpack as right now I can find only 2nd edition ones. No matter, I can also steal one from my proper Space Wolf army as I mixed a few Chaos Marine parts across it to give a more antiqued look.

http://s17.postimage.org/59ql4fsrz/WIP_Characters_02.jpg

The force sword came out nice, although the picture doesn't show the mingled blue and purple too well. I need a base for him as the Chaos bike came with a 28mm round base which is clearly a packaging error, although I do feel tempted to mount him on it and claim right of based on what he was supplied with just to convert a few more followers to the god of rage. I won't bother with Games Workshop as I have been eying some resin ones and just have not yet decided as the basing scheme of the army is still undecided and I do not want it to visually clash, although hooking up an tiny mp3 player to have the mini play the Clash would be fine.

http://s13.postimage.org/xlhqt6u2v/DA_Biker_Sorcerer_01.jpg

I like the way the guy with the broken sword came out as thus far, although he still has more work to go on the details. I also need to find a blade for him and I think a plastic scout combat blade with a black oily sheen might look good, although I am thinking a carved piece of green translucent sprue might be neat too. The Ahriman body, Abaddon head, Fabulous Bill pimp stick guy is puzzling as I think that I should paint some of his robes black and have yellow ivy running along it, but I am not sure where.

http://s18.postimage.org/b8skhakeh/Sorcerer_WIP_01.jpg

Here is the interior for the Rhino. This is something of a fun change as I can embellish the ivy with the larger canvas.

Update time. I'm getting sick and tired of my father's camera, I cannot get the lighting the way I like it, the pictures never seem right, and from time to time it shows the paint below the top level wash making it look nothing like what it really does. My camera is so much better, but with the constant updates and the lack of a scanner, devolving film for this would mean even greater delays between updates to this, so onwards with this digital piece of junk.

Here are all but two of my vowed Terminators who are not from the Dornian Heresy. One of the missing Terminators has lost his head and the other an arm. I suspect my cat is gathering pieces for a conversion as he does steal my 40K and hide it. The last two are of a head swap I liked and I intentionally overexposed the last one to get a better look at the face.

http://s8.postimage.org/q5xvvxf0l/Iron_Warriors_Terminator_overexposed_face.jpg

I also finished the Sorcerer whose eyes would not show in the proper yellow color they actually are.

http://s8.postimage.org/rju44z3np/Iron_Warriors_Sorcerer_01.jpg

That's not all, here is the work in progress for my Raven Guard Raptors. I am looking to keep these guys in dark colors so they appear as shadows on the field, but I want to pick out more detail and am a little unsure of how to proceed. I'm thinking a dark purple of the chest skull might do the trick if it is really dark. Possibly a 2:1 mix of Liche Purple and Badab Black washed with a 1:1 mix of Badab Black and Leviathan Purple will do and then I can highlight with Liche Purple. I will need to test it first.

http://s8.postimage.org/s33srzkg5/Raptors_WIP_01.jpg

The Daemon Prince is close to done, he just needs chevrons painted on his shoulder pad. The two Imperial Fists Sorcerers from before have had more details picked out but are still a little ways from complete and the Rhino is only awaiting the ivy, which I am saving as a treat as it will be a lot of fun. Also with the humidity broken, I was able to spray all the Night Lords stuff so I can get started on them. Things are finally on a roll.

A little more done here and there, not really update worthy, but who cares more stuff is completed. I finished the Imperial Fists Sorcerers as well as the Iron Warriors Daemon Prince. I will be repainting the helmet and Necron head trophies to match local foes who prove worthy (as it stands they are Boltgun Metal with a Badab Black wash). I have a feeling the helmet will end up Angels Vermillion (JamesI, I'm looking at you) since no other local army proves so tough against all of my armies, save Dark Eldar. I also painted up the autocannon pattern twin-linked bolter yesterday.

EDIT: You may not the bottle of Excedrin in the vase my brother made me for Christmas. This camera is making me need it for the headache it is giving me :tu: . If I continue to encounter new fun issues, I'll just slow this down and start using my Minolta SRT and track down a scanner.

Here is both vows completed. With my airbrush broken, it was a close thing with the Brass Scorpion, but it is done, even if it cost me all of my Badab Black. The Rhino was fun to paint, but for a little bit I was thinking that perhaps the Rhinos should not be covered in the ivy, reserving it for possessed vehicles or perhaps just the bigger vehicles like Predators, Vindicators, and Land Raiders. In the end I compromised on the latter by going easy on the ivy with the intent that those other vehicles will have more intricate covering.

Here are all eight of the Iron Warior Terminators and the Lord.

My Raven Guard Raptors are finished. After getting a good look at the models on the gaming table at my local stores, I liked how they are without messing with the chest. This is a bad picture of them, but the prior one shows the highlighting nicely.

http://s7.postimage.org/zfbwd6mor/Raptors.jpg

My Night Lords came out half as nice as I hoped because there is no lightning on it. I tried a few times and just couldn't get it right so I gave up on it. These sixteen are just the types not to decorate with lightning when in midnight clad. Later Night Lords will get another try.

http://s18.postimage.org/fm0arbaih/Night_Lords.jpg

Ragnar the Betrayer needed a backpack and I wanted to convert one, but in the end, the stock one is fine too.

Because he was hard to see, here is the Familiar.

Brass Scorpion details. My lighting sucks and the flash on this silly borrowed camera doesn't want to work or just doesn't like me.
