Mars-Pattern Storm Talon Conversion

Recommended Posts

Hey dudes, WIP of my Storm Talon.

I think the model had some good potential but I felt the hull was too short and the wings/tail all wrong. The weapon systems were also really cluttered and bulky as well so instead of just complaining, I got to work!

It's still a WIP as of these photographs, I am waiting on two slightly larger wings to come (StormRaven tails) which will finish it off but I am still getting the tail section finished off as far as the conversion goes.

Parts I'm using that didn't come with the kit:

Plasticard

StormRaven Assault Cannons & Shrouds, x2

StormRaven Typhoon Launcher

StormRaven Tail (vertical), x2

Rhino Top Hatch Hinges (For the tail rudder)

I should have it done and painted for my Red Scorpions in the next week:

I was thinking of how to convert the Storm Talon, and I think you've hit the nail on the proverbial head! I'll admit it does have a slight Apache gunship look to it, but it's preferable to the ugly flying box.

The Apache is a sleek looking vehicle and you've given me a few ideas when I get around to buying one. To me thee original looks to bulky and busy at the front end - too squat really. I think both the Talon and the Raven need stretching out and GW could have done a better job in the first place. But as long as there are budding converters out there doing amazing things with the kits available, I'm sure we will see many more to come.

Maybe you could rename this one as the Stormtalon Apache variant. It would look great with rotors in the top ............... B)

Are you a madman! I'd have to re-do the tail and this one took me long enough (I'm certainly not getting another of these).

I'm going for something akin to the V-22 Osprey but with the wings on the outside of the turbines instead of inside. The wings will still be short-ish as far as planes go but longer than the standard ones for the kit by half as much again.

For some reason I am starting to imagine the Talon looking like Thunderbird 2 now with the wing setup you've described. This would work as the talon does not look as much like a beached whale as Thunderbird 2 did. I wonder if it would be possible to do a twin tail setup too............sorry, coming up with ideas for future refernce there :yuck:

As to whether I'm a madman or not, I'm going to quote a certain Dr. Sheldon Cooper "I'm not insane - my mother had me tested"

For the Emperor, and the GDI!

I can't be the only one who sees the resemblance?

Orca ftw!, so no. you are not. Currently making mine to resemble it even more. Minus the tail roter.

And on this topic, looks good, are you going to be fixing the little wings just above the assualt cannons?

I have to say I'm not a fan of putting the ACs on the jets.

To shoot anything on the ground it will have to fly towards the ground to do so...

Unless the ACs pivot independently of the jets \m/

Great work man, looking sweet :)

Thanks dudes,

On the AC mounting position, If you were to apply the design to a real world scenario the pilot would be dropping in and strafing from up high to shoot targets on the ground.

It is a flyer after all and im glad I liberated it from its previously horrid weapon locations.

The wings are going to go on the slots as intended but will just be wider.

Got a little more done, added the RS logos and base coated the hull in my grey:

Thats looking good - you would never guess from the work you've done that the tail section is a scratchbuild. I take you will be leaving those silly vain things off from behind the cockpit? For some reason they look to Tau like to me.

Yeah I cut those down to the nub, hated that look. Kinda reminded me of the Grey Knight teleportation backpacks which just seem so odd and an aftertought on this model.

A lot of the original model seems thrown together. It's as if they took a Stormraven, shrunk it down and just added a load of bits and weapons. I think there will be plenty more conversions in the coming months.

Not really. It's designed to be a gunship similar to a modern attack helicopter, not a ground attack fighter. It shouldn't need high angles of attack and long run ups. That defeats the purpose.

Your conversion looks great so far, but his critique of the weapon placement on the drive engines is valid. It's as much a design flaw as having landing gear on the chin turret, lol.

OH-58s and BO-105s use high-angle attacks runs. They call it "bumping," where they pick up altitude, bump over like the peak of a parabolic arc, and swoop down on their targets from above. Granted they're not true attack helos, but the point stands. I agree with you, don't get me wrong, but the Apache isn't the end-all, be-all of attack aviation.
