My Stormtalon conversion project

Recommended Posts

hi there,

Thought I would share the start of converting the Stormtalon...

First I decided to lenghten the tail section, and while playing around with the parts for a suitable location for the secondary weapons system I put it on top instead of the nose.

Next up will be integrating the assault cannons into the nose for a more streamlined look, but with the original cannons.

Also was thinking of making a second pair of rotating smaller engines using the nozzles from the underside and put them on the tail or the front mounting points of the missiles, just dont know yet though.

Here's some pics

What do you think?

Wow, that looks leagues better already. Mounting the missiles on top of the thing had never occurred to me; what sparked that bit of creative genius?

Well, I was always under the impression that lengthening the tail fins could allow a converter to use whirlwind turret parts as smaller engines that could also rotate like the larger side engines on the storm talon. But hey, that's just my 2 throne geld on the subject.

Thanks for the comments...

@The_Chaplain You might be on to something with whirlwind the missile pods, only I dont have the parts lying around to check. About the missiles just thought it would look cool and incidentally it ties in more with the stormeagle.

I'm working now on integrating the assault cannons in the nose and have cut an opening in the front where normaly the scanner sits (pics will follow)

also chopped the floor up so it's sleeker..

That's a great idea - gonna have to steal that for when I get a couple

A quick question if you don't mind - if you leave off the box with the assault cannons in, could you flip it over and mount it on a razorback - would the circular bit fit in the razorback hole? Saves buying a couple of Crusader sprues if it does...

Cheers!

Nope. The RB's turrent ring is far bigger.

Ah right, thanks. Might still go down that route anyway and do a bit of converting to make it snug.

Well, if you still put the assault cannons in the little armored casement it comes with, it'd look decent. . . just wouldn't rotate like a turret should.

@ Brother baphomet, You could use the turret upside down easily.

Only the mounting is indeed smaller but that is easily solved by putting some plasticard on the inside of the razorback/predator plate and setting the stormtalon turret mounting in the middle of the opening by using only the slotted part of the center ring. Would look nice I think ^_^

Almost finished building the stormtalon and getting it ready for some paint...

Added the extra engines I was thinking about and some other things.

Here's some pictures ;)

An excellent conversion, but in my opinion... not asthectically pleasing. It looks like a flying taxi, if Im to be blunt. Admittedly, a flying taxi with rockets..

I do admit, the tail engines are a wonderfull idea. Its just the rockets on the top look a little out of place. I would have actually mounted them either under the engines on the main wing pinions OR keep them where they are, but increase the wingspan of the main engine mounts AND add a wingspan to the tail motors. Makes it look alot more maneuvorable.

I agree. I like the extra set of jet engines at the rear, wouldn't mind a small tutorial on those if you have the time? Also think the missile pods are out of proportion...maybe place them somewhere else on the model or use a different missile system (are they just a missile launcher or something else like bloodmissiles on the stormraven) as the missile launcher on termies is tiny as is the one on the forgeworld landspeeder so maybe use them?

I think those pods are the "Skyhammer" missiles.

Looks realy good, so much better than the standard model :)

This is really inspiring for those of that love to do conversions. I really like the rearward thrusters. I wonder, though, how they would look if placed on the rear wing tips. HHhhhmmm... Intriguing.

Nice work.

Still a taxi with missiles ;) lucky for me then it is not for the Imperial Fists or Lamenters ;)

@The Chaplain, The skull/halo thingy is modified from one of the Forgeworld Sisters of Battle icon pack icons.

Wow. And I mean WOW. Such a simple solution, and yet so clever. Congratulations, man: you've made an enormous improvement on the original model. When the GW people see it, they'll probably bang their heads against the wall thinking why they didn't think about it in the first place.

How exactly did you attach the missiles to the top of the hull? I don't think you can simply place them there, because there's a piece at the top in the original model, where the antennae go, that looks like it'd get in the way. I'm only asking because I'd really love to copy that :jaw: (In fact, some close-up pics would be awesome)
