Grey Wolves - A Painting and Modeling log by J!M

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I'm trying to complete my DIY vanilla chapter - the Grey Wolves. And no, they're not based on Space Wolves :)

Anyway, this is the blueprint:

I painted up a couple of test models, the best of which looks like this and I'm pretty happy with it as a tabletop standard model:

So to get my first 1000 points out of the way, now I just need to paint the rest of his ten man Tactical squad, and an additional tactical squad. A five man missile dev squad, captain and command squad and the rhino's and razorbacks.

Hopefully I will be able to use this log as a motivating factor to push me forwards as normally I procastrinate too much - so give me lots of TLC please to help me along! Maybe by time I've done a few models I'll have line highlighting mastered!

First target is to have completed the first tactical squad by 22nd June (then two weeks holiday in Europe!) See you in a week!

Right, inbetween watching Sons of Anarchy, I've been doing spats of painting this week. My first Tactical squad is not going to be completed before I go on Holiday on Saturday but I will take some pictures tomorrow in the daylight and post them as quite a lot of progress has been made on them :)

Until tomorrow then :)

OK, so as per my advice yesterday - my first tactical squad is not yet finished. I still need to paint on the details, as well as the yellow trim. One of the pictures below shows two models more completed than the others - these were two test models I was happy with, but I am planning on touching them up a bit more.

I'm thinking about painting the imperium badges, and skulls on the bolters in metal - what do you guys think about the introduction of that new colour? I think it'll be OK.

So without further ado, tactical squad 1 so far:

This will be my last post till after 10th July as I'm backpacking around Europe, so expect further progress made by 17th July.

As ever C&C welcome - I need it to keep me motivated!

Cheers

that sgt looks cool, good use of bits. i think grey marines look good, simple fact. i like the two tone grey youve got going on too, its almost a shame youre putting the yellow trim on there, speaking of which i reckon yes for the pauldron trim and squad leaders helmet stripe bit i wouldnt bother with it on the wrists- looks a bit like theyre off for a jog! keep them coming.

It's a nice scheme, kinda reminds me of the white panthers scheme, though I'd go with a bit more contrast between the light and dark grey to make it really pop, and some tighter highlights might help since your the shade for your highlights of the dark grey are almost the same colour as the light grey. But it's a great start

OK, I'm back of my holidays and I've managed to finish off my first tactical squad (pictures below). Now I'm working on the Rhino for this tactical squad, and once that's completed I'll do the second tactical squad. (Largely the same load out, but with a different sergeant (see pic)

As always - C&C more than welcome - showing off my work as I go is the only thing that keeps me going!!

Dissapointing ratio of views to comments since my last post ;) Oh well, I'm hoping that the inclusion my finished Rhino will prompt some interest:

Sorry about the shoddy picture, but the model was too big for my usual background!

I'm also just waiting for my paint to dry on my Captain then I'll post him.

Ciao

Marines are looking great, my only peeve is based in personal preference and that's due to the fact that I'd have gone with a slightly lighter metal on the weapons to contrast with black - but I concede that might be the way the images are displayed to me as I'm sat in a Costa Coffee ;)

Thanks dude, I thought about painting the bolters navy blue, but I wasn't too sure about the idea ;)

Anyway, here's my captain, complete with my first attempt at both blending and lightning effects.

I don't have a name for my Captain yet, so suggestions welcome :)

I like your painting, man. I was a bit worried at first they'd look similar to my own grey chapter, the Sons of Tyr, but they're pretty unique-looking. Keen in particular on the 'clean' look the Rhino has, and your Captain's pretty cool. The yellow in general looks well shaded (speaking as an ex-Imperial Fists player, it looks great). My favourite's probably the Sergeant of tac squad #1, really smoothly painted! If I was going to make a minor criticism it'd be that the eyes on the bareheaded models are a bit 'starey' - maybe try dotting white either side of the black iris, rather than trying to put a black dot in a sea of white? Hope that makes sense. Anyway they're looking cool! What's the gist of their backstory?

Hey Dude, thanks for your comment and question. I do actually have a bit of an issue with painting the eyes on barehead models - I always try and paint a horizontal white line then a vertical black line, but it never works. If anyone knows a good tutorial that would be handy :)

I'm still bashing about ideas in my head for a back story, but I'd like to get something in about how the captain is currently being pursued by the inquisition due to fears of a Chaos taint stemming from the companies bloodlust and unfortunate tendancy to enjoy taking trophies. And as of such, my marines are doing their best to avoid any inquisitorial rendevous without displaying the appearance of avoidance - This kind of suggests naughtiness whilst leaving room for an honest explanation :)

Other than that I've not really given much thought :)

Interesting story, look forward to reading more of it when you've fleshed it out ;) As far as the painting goes, I would suggest that you simply do a tiny black dot first of all and then try and paint a reeeeeally tiny white blob either side of the black dot. This will make the eyes look a bit more to scale and as if the face is puckered up (as most Marines are sculpted with rage faces that would make the Full Metal Jacket drill sergeant proud). Don't know of any tutorials but check out the tutorials forum here or the Librarium, there's normally something to help everyone :)

Keep it up!

Solid work fella. Personally I'd swap the red purity seals to purple. Also I'd paint the loin cloth much whiter or change it to perhaps turquiose/ blue?

The bases work really well ;)

OK, I'm working on the devastator squad at the moment, a couple of minor conversions, and repositioning done here too :D

The painted two are still awaiting their line highlights on the light grey armour. The others, just recieved their first base coat of dark grey.

I am very happy with my sergeant conversion here

These are looking great, I like the colour scheme. Yellow is a great contrast spot colour for greys and the pauldron trims really stand out.

If I have a complaint it's that the bolters are very drab; someone else suggested a brighter highlight on the metallic parts of them and I think that would help a lot. I'd be tempted to try out some kind of yellow marking on them to complete the spot colour effect, too.
