Sharp's ETL Vow

Recommended Posts

I, Brother-Captain Sharp of the Angels of Retribution, hear the call of the Inner Circle and pledge in humility to complete one Land Raider Crusader with Extra Armor, one Deathwing Terminator Squad with Banner, Cyclone Missile Launcher, and Apothecary, and one Captain with Combi-plasma and Power Sword from Codex Dark Angels of total value 690 points on or before 227.012.M3. Success will honor the Sons of the Lion, while failure will doom me to bear the sign of damnation until the year-end.

So, I'm living with my parents temporarily due to roommates not knowing how budgeting works. Today I decided to try and get some painting done, so I went and dug out my paints. Here's my work space:

http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj236/sesharp/d3455399.jpg

:) Little bit tight. And yes, that's a 18"x48" board laid over buckets. So that makes painting a little hard.

Plus, I could only find one brush: my base coating brush. Forging ahead, I got the quartering roughed out on the Land Raider Crusader, and then got bored. So I decided, to hell with it, I'm painting the captain.

As such, this model so far has been painted with one size brush: basecoat. It was a challenging idea and I've actually learned a lot from trying it.

Comparison between the brush and model:

(Sorry for the small pictures. My phone's cropping program sucks)

Overall, I'm happy with the progress I got done on him tonight.

P.S. Oh yeah, I got the OOP Dark Angels captain with combi-plasma. I only paid $15 to get it  :)

He's been like that for years. A whole decade of "whooaaa!!" :)

And these are larger pictures:

Thanks for the comments, guys!

Love the cloak...and really nice work with just a basecoat brush!

Looking forward on how you will do the banner...havent decided yet how to make mine!

Thanks, Nemiel. I paint my banners in the quartered scheme on robed models to reinforce the main colors.

Whooa - you went for purple! Great choice and brilliant execution! Can't wait to see this one finished... BTW does he have a name? ;)

Purple is a fun color to use on HQs, make 'em stand out in a robed army in a way not as gaudy as "gold everywhere!"

No name yet, open to suggestions! :) Thanks, Semper.

this is pretty impressive, i too love that cloak! the fact that this is all being done by a bascoat brush makes this all the more impressive lol

Thanks, DIA. I finally found my detail brush (as I was finishing up tonight) so detail work is gonna move forward at a good pace, I hope.

Quick update on the Captain's progress:

I feel like face didn't show up well at all. In natural light, it's got good shadows to it.

Comments and criticism welcome!

Update for today: After an all-nighter, the Captain is done. I had a lot of fun painting him and trying out different techniques. The OSL glow is the first that I've done outside of eyes, so I'm happy with how that worked out. The idea of the mini was that I wanted him to be as foreboding as possible, with battle damage and weathering to demonstrate that he has been out in the field on for a somewhat extended period. But, enough talking. Here he is:

And a slightly better view of the OSL

Overall, I'm very happy with him. While certian colors may not be executed the best I could, I really like the layout and feel of the mini. What do you guys think? Comments and criticism welcome, as always!

Next up: Command Land Raider

Edit: If it isn't apparent, I picked up a detail brush from my LGS yesterday and finished with that. I wish I could do battle damage with a basecoat brush! :pinch:

Woah really nice Master!...Hmm but now im even unsure how to do the banner on my Master, i maybe go for a similar quartered scheme, but in the 6th company style...good that i got 2 of those backpacks/banner bits!

Well and nice OSL for 1st try...a bit much if you ask me, reminds me always to those pimped cars with LEDs everywhere...nice camouflage effekt! :)

Edit: Oh, forgot to ask what colours you use? Old or the new ones, if you use new ones what you used for the purple robe?

Sweet!

If you open for comments, I think that rhe OSL on the banner should be more or a sharper triangle instead of just the botton part of the cloth, know what I mean?

Since the plasma coil is vertical, the light should also be kinda vertical...sigh, hard to explain!

I love this Master - especially the purple that you've chosen :).

I know exactly what you mean. My issue generally with this kind of technique is that cloth isn't reflective in the way that the effect tries to mimic. Had the effect been on (polished) armour/metal then so be it. Having said that it does add a great deal of additional character and interest to the model .

Cheers

@Brother-Chaplain Nemiel: I used the old colors. The cloak is Liche Purple with varying amounts of Bleached Bone for highlighting, and a Badab Black/Liche Purple was for depth. Hope that helps.

@Tanhausen, Isiah: I do know what you guys mean, and I completely agree. That banner was very frustrating and eventually I just left it how it was.

@Deathwing70: Barrels don't bother me, so I don't bother to do it much. *shrug*

Thanks for the comments guys! :tu: The encouragement and compliments really help. As for any changes: I tend to leave models as they are when I decide they're done, otherwise I'll continually touch up. So he won't be changed. However, I will apply anything I learn to the next model with OSL.

Terminator Command Squad fully converted and ready for touch up priming. I used some older models that had never had legal wargear to create these guys, thus explaining the painted sections. I'll get better individual shots of the conversion when I do the first painting update.

Good, this means we do not have to go to the next level... :tu:

Seriously though, it's good to see you so energetic - we do need those completions! Keeping the pace is important if we need to build momentum. Well done Brother Captain!

Progress for the night: got a good amount of the coats done of the Apothecary. With me trying to get in as many 6th games as I can, I need him off my painting desk so I can use him! ;) Here's how he's looking so far. Obviously he's got a bit left to do.

If needles and narthecium fails - use cyclones! ;)

Excellent work as usual Brother Captain! But do I spot two Crux Terminatus? What's that, 5++ save? ;) I think you might want to paint the other one is a more distinctive color... maybe red? (since he's a doc, you know...) ;) Love the free hand on the fist!

Thanks, Semper. I took your idea about the red Crux. I have no idea how I did that while building. ;)

I figure it is about time for an update. Though it's a small one, I'm really quite pleased with the finished mini.

Apothercary Hezziel, permanent member of the Angels of Retribution.

Had a lot of fun making his base! I've decided for a very weathered and battered look, as the Terminator Command squad is constantly in the thickest area of fighting, both fluff-wise and on the tabletop. The entire squad will be weathered to the level of Hezziel. Hope you like him, though I understand some may not like the overly weathered approach.

Comments and criticism welcome! Cheers. :)

What happened to this guy? He looks like he took on a regiment of IG on his own (hence the non-penetrative hits :D )

OK he looks very very brutal - but considering his job is to slit the thoat of his dying comrades end extract their glands he looks fine! :P

Excellent base too! Keep it up - can't wait for the banner!

I believe using the reductor as a piston to shoot into the brain from behind the skull is the favored method of Space Marine euthanasia. Slitting of the throat is a survivable injury. :P

That would be the carnifex (the original use of the term in 40K, a lethal penetrating captive bolt gun, and not the big Tyranid gribbly) rather than the reductor (which is solely for harvesting).
