The 36th Millennium would be host to the Cursed Founding of the Adeptus Astartes. Though some Chapters escaped mutation they were cursed by some misfortune. The Ice Warriors were established on the gene seed of the Salamanders, altered and toyed with. It was evident that the Mechanicus was by no means as knowledgeable as the God Emperor and so the gene seed failed. In hope of restoring the appearance of the gene seed, the Mechanicus altered its purpose entirely, hitting some sort of genetic lock caused by the Salamders radiation exposure. The mutation went into reversal. The once jet black skin became pale and bleak. The Marines that were created had white snow like skin, their eyes also faded with blue and their reflexes slowed. The Chapter was far different from expected, and as further tests revealed, their skin was sensitive to heat and light. Though their power armour could protect them from most of the damaging light, their bodies had to remain at a cool temperature. Their armour was outfitted with cooling systems that transferred CO2 across the body through a series of pipes. If these were at any point damaged, then the CO2 would escape and would render the occupant vulnerable. In certain high temperatures though even these high pressure cooling systems would fail. While the Mechanicus worked out ways to adhere to these issues, the Salamanders had found out of the new founded chapter by word of the Techpriests of Forgeworld Garrin. They wished to have nothing to do with this product chapter and departed. With each marine now encased in his power armour outfitted with the necessary cooling systems, the chapter began to mobilise on its battle barge, “The Black Glacier”. The ship had been modified to meet the chapter’s needs, with cooling ducts and light filtration, the marines were free to at least de-helm. All members of the Mechanicus that took part in the chapters creation were executed when word got out that they had tampering with sacred technologies of the Astartes. The Inquisition saw no harm in letting the Ice Warriors go free though a close eye would be kept on the chapter.

Homeworld

The Ice Warriors now set course for the Sub-Sector of Hibernus in Segmentum Ultima where the High Lords of Terra had assigned them to defend a small portion of space from any threat. They began to set up Homeworld on the planet named Aura. Though its climates were freezing all year round (-30oc in summer and -120oc in winter), being such a distance from its sun, this made perfect for a chapter of Space Marines that relied on the cold to keep them alive. Aura being a Deathworld had no population other than the occasional animal suited to the cold environment. If the chapter was to continue recruiting they would need to expand their rule across the Sub-Sector.

The worlds within the Sub-Sector were populated by humans that had settled there thousands of years past. The Imperial Guard that had instated its rule previously had put in place the worship of the Emperor and had built Monasteries and places of gathering. The Guard had long since departed for the Eye of Terror and now what remained of the Imperial civilisations were now ruins. The people lived in ramshackle buildings and log huts gathered in villages across expansive country. Across the Sub-Sector 12 planets were settled but they could not set up contact the other worlds.

Though most of the time the population got along with one another among their small communities, there were times when a particular individual would cause trouble amongst the people and infighting would breakout. When the Ice Warriors arrived, they witnessed the savagery of one of these brutal civil wars. Immediately the Chapter Master stepped in and imposed rule over all the planets population. The High Priest of the people had prophesised of when the Emperors warriors would return to them to end all quarrels and begin an age of peace. The people began to rejoice and begun weeks of festivities, gathering in the millions in some locations. The Ice Warriors travelled to each planet to once again impose dominance, and each time the people would celebrate the new age of their people. This was the first contact with the people of the Sub-Sector in 800 years. For 800 years all means of travelling between planets was lost and so they all became isolated from each other. This was the day when they would finally be able to trade again.

Recruitment

With the Ice Warriors firmly set up in the Sub-Sector, they pulled back to Aura, their Homeworld, to begin the recruitment stages. When a village of one of the 12 planets was discovered to have a warrior of immense skill or bravery, they would be sent to Aura for immediate training in the cold wastes. Even when the gene seed is implanted it takes time to get used to the bitter cold they must endure. The trainees would experience not only the bitter cold but also the need to fight their lives against the beasts of Aura. Once a trainee passed his final stages of recruitment he would be given the honour of his power armour and his gene seed. The transformation from normal skin completion to pail white was quick in the extreme. All the procedures had to be conducted in the proper conditions as to not startle the senses. When they had accepted their power armour that would keep them frozen for life, they were one of the chapter. This practice would continue right up to the beginning M41.

Weaponry and Heraldry

The Ice Warriors armour is white above the waist and grey bellow, using black to distinguish rank. Their armour is built in with CO2 cooling systems to keep their body at a stable temperature. Their lenses keep out most harmful light from the marines sensitive eyes. The weaponry constructed by the Ice Warriors takes full advantage of their cold blooded nature. Helmets are constructed with heat sensors so that they can easily pick out foes in the combat. Bolters were also cooled to the point where they would shatter on impact, giving less armour penetration but more fatal shrapnel. Flamers were completely removed from the chapter arsenal. Fire was their greatest enemy and would so like to keep it a fair distance away. Plasma and Melta weaponry is also unused but is still available to the chapter if needs so ask for it. The more frequently used alternative is a weapon known as the Cryogenic gun. This weapon was designed to the function of the plasma gun but fires a blast of cold liquid that freezes instantly on impact. Frag grenades were outfitted with similar cryogenic material that freezes on impact. One method also used by the Ice Warriors is to release clouds of dense fog onto the battlefield before attack. The fog was a chemical that not only lowered the temperature and allowed poor visibility, but also slowed down the sensory reactions of whoever breathed in its fumes. The fog literally dulled down your reactions and slowed your mind.

Beliefs

The Ice Warriors have continued to worship the Emperor as their lord but are on shaky terms with the rest of the Imperium and have nearly come to blows with the Imperial cult over their blasphemous practices. The Ice Warriors have chosen to see the Emperor as a guiding light, a glimmer of hope that would lead them to glory. The star that is seen on Auras northern most pole is known as “The Emperors Light” so that even trainees in the waste would never be lost in the cold. For every campaign and every battle, the Ice Warriors make prayer to the Emperor to guide them to war so that they may cleanse their path to him. The Ice Warriors tend to see all other fanatical cults and beliefs of the Emperor as improper. The Emperor is not an idol to ask for divine intervention or forgiveness, but an everlasting guide. The Chaplains instated in the Ice Warriors are therefore relatively bad tempered but are gifted planetary navigators and strategists as well as keepers of faith. Chaplains are also given authority to, if necessary, take command of its Company if he judges its Captain unfit for duty.

Organisation

The Ice Warriors are organised into the 10 companies as dictated by the Codex Astartes but features an irregular amount of Dreadnoughts within each Company, some having up to 8 at once. This is partly due to the fact that it is very easy to recover fallen Ice Warriors who yet still live as their cooling power armour can also activate to slip them into status if injuries are critical. The Ice Warriors also have very few Assault Marines as they’re not yet capable of manoeuvring the fast Jump Packs with such slow reflexes and accidents have occurred previously. Only those daring enough decide to risk their lives in assaulting the enemy from above.

Combat Doctrine

The Ice Warriors tend to favour Drop Assaults or “Steel Rain” above other forms of combat. This is mainly due to the fighting style of the Ice Warriors preferring to strike at range but also being close enough to sow terror into their foes hearts. As the Ice Warriors drop pods make ground they instantly open fire on the targets causing disorientation and panic within the ranks. Enemies throw themselves to the ground and run for cover as they are bombarded by bolter fire. The advantage to striking up close as appose to afar is that the Ice Warriors may break any plan or strategy the enemy had by striking at the heart first, direct and devastating. Another style used is close quarters fighting.

Gene Seed

As said before, the Ice Warriors gene seed has broken some sort of genetic balance, triggering panic in their own DNA. This has left the affected Marines with pale white skin, extreamly vulnerable senses and faded blue eyes. Their skin is sensitive to both light and heat and needed to be kept at a low temperature at all times. Their eyes needed to be protected from damaging light with use of filter lenses. All Marines wear a mask on their mouth to keep all air entering the body at a cool temperature, making their voice very monotone and harsh. Their power armour was modified with cooling systems by the Mechanicus to in some way cover up their mistake, though after this they demanded a higher gene seed tithe for experimentation. This has meant that the Ice Warriors have had little chance to expand numbers. The gene seed also means that all Marines have slower reflexes in combat, which has troubled the chapter more than once in the past.

War Cry

The Ice Warriors use quotes said by the founding Chapter Master Dionysus in his long campaign against Waaagh! Headlopa in Segmentum Tempest. Under his command no Marine fell on the front line and even the bloodthirsty Orks gave into fear. Today they continue to honour him through his words, spreading terror in their foes. Two of the more commonly used ones are "Death is Cold!" and also "Freeze their blood!"

History (Pre M41)

At the beginning of M39 the Ice Warriors had been instructed by the High Lords of Terra to make their way West into Segmentum Pasificus to secure the border regions from a Chaos invasion fleet from Segmentum Obscurus. The Black Legion had escaped a fleet south while Abandon conducts the 10th Black Crusade in the north. The fleet escaped watch from the Cadian Guard and had arrived on the boarder of Segmentum Pasificus. The Ice Warriors had mobilised on their battle barge “The Black Glacier” and arrived to find the sector in turmoil as the Black Legion flooded the border lands.

The following war would last for three decades. The Black Templars had fallen back as they refused to work with a cursed founding chapter. The remaining forces began with a series of civilian evacuations conducted by the Catachan 122nd and drop assaults organised by the Ice Warriors, and after a majority of the population had been transported to safety, the Catachans and Ice Warriors begun to close in on the Chaos Lord Aragast on the planet of Herald Prime. The Black Legion had raided most of the Sector but the intervention of the Ice Warriors had held them back on this planet for 20 years of the war. The Catachan122nd deployed heavy armoured support and made siege to the Chaos Fortress now known as “The Pillagers Keep” to the Black Legion. While the forces exchanged fire, the Ice Warriors infiltrated the Chaos lines with Scouts and sabotaged the aerial defences. Now the Chapter Master called in the Storm Talons to strike from above. As the Ice Warriors’ aerial raids wore down the Chaos line, the Catachan Leman Russ known as “The Iron Bender” brought down the fortress gates and the Catachan Devils entered into the keep. The Chapter Master and his Honour Guard were dropped into the fray by their Thunderhawk Transport and lead the assault into the Black Legion. Soon they had driven the last of the Chaos Marines into the heart of the Keep against the mountain side. The Imperial forces retreated out of the fortress as the Ice Warriors Chapter Master sent one last message to the orbiting Battle Barge “Fire”. The Black Glacier brought its heavy weapons to bear on the keep as it incinerated the last of the Black Legion. The Ice Warriors were victorious and departed for Aura once again.

History (Events in the M41)

It had now been now over 2000 years since the war in Segmentum Pasificus and the Ice Warriors had remained in the Sub-Sector Hibernus defending its worlds from all dangers. After the defeat of Waaagh! Grotloba that invaded the planet of Helios within the system, the Ice Warriors had sent forth its companies to Ultramar to serve with the Ultramarines. Marneus Calgar could not allow them entry as his Chapter would not smile at letting a Chapter of the Cursed Founding into the Sector. The Ice Warriors were desperate to prove themselves to the other Astartes, so the Chapter Master declared that the Ice Warriors would embark on a 500 year crusade across the Eastern Fringe.

On the year 135.M41 was the last recorded sighting till 899.M41 when they emerged with just over 100 of their brothers remaining. "The Black Glacier" was long destroyed and they arrived on Marcragge travelling on an Imperial trade ship. The 2nd Company Captain Harron had taken command of the chapter and its men. The crusade had been brought to a halt, but none of them would return for nearly 800 years.

During the crusade, after much fighting against the Ork's on Haradwaith, out of the warp came an Ork Space Hulk (known as “The Walls of Hades” to the Imperium), the ork's immediately took advantage of running into a space marine battle barge and rammed its prow strait into the Glaciers hull. It tore through the metal and nearly split the ship in two. The Chapter Master ordered the surviving marines to evacuate by using the escape pods. The ork's begun to board the battle barge, killing any in sight. Techmarine Mothicyus decided to remain to detonate the ships engines, sending the ork's and their space hulk into oblivion. As the Warboss hopped onto the ship’s deck he suddenly heard a large booming noise. Next thing he knew his boys, his Waaagh!, and the two ships were blown out of existence. Most of the Ice Warriors had escaped by Drop Pod and landed on the Imperial World of Luin. The Planetary Governor praised the chapter as heroes for saving the world from an ork Waaagh the planets forces could never have held off. The Chapter Master said many a brother was lost in the process, including young Mothicyus. The people supplied them with a ship and crew as to pilot them back to their Homeworld. The Chapter Master was egger to return home to Aura and was strained after much fighting against the Ork's in another sector (this is a whole other story). In two days the Ice Warriors departed for the nearby world of Hestia where they would meet with the Cadian 94th Regiment. The Chapter Master agreed to the plan and set about organising his men into the ship. The flight would pass well until they reached near orbit of Hestia. If almost as if fate had cursed them, a warp storm sprung into life near the planet’s surface. Out sprung daemons and foul beasts onto the planet’s surface as they burned everything in sight. The crew went mad with panic as they witnessed the evil of chaos leaping forth. Only the Ice Warriors could resist the urge to flee. They took control of the ship and attempted to steer away from the warp storms clutches. Despite the greatest efforts of the Chapter Command, the ship was snared by the warp and carried into the depths. Each marine knew that they would have no choice but to remain strong.

It is said that Chaos cultist activity on Hestia was the cause of such a dramatic warp occurrence. The cults had risen to an uncontrollable level, the Imperial Guard were forced to execute civilians on the streets to prevent the taint spreading. It would not be enough as the planet was swallowed by the warp and ripped to shreds by the dark powers. It was speculated that the year 580.M41 was the year of the Ice Warriors return to the material world. Their ship remained whole and stable for a time. The crew were said to have turned to spawn and ripped apart some of the marines. The Ice Warriors remained still after hundreds of years in the warp. The chapters Librarians had attempted to shield the chapter from chaotic attack by creating a field of psychic energy. They had not calculated the level of energy flowing around them, so as they begun to work, their heads ruptured as they chanted. The remaining Marines were forced to survive by sheer faith and courage. It is also said that they saw a single light amongst all the chaos, almost like a star, and they tried to follow it. For years they went towards it till they crashed through realities and found themselves in the Segmentum Obscurus, the Eye of Terror. The Chapter Master was now by many opinions old, over 900 years now. He was amazed that any had survived such torment and that the Emperor was surely was with them those many years.

The Ice Warriors drifted in the remains of the ship till they arrived at the Orbital Battle Station known as the Bane Severus. This vital outpost was controlled by the White Marauder’s 4th Company (a successor chapter of the White Scars) drifting around their Homeworld/Deathworld of Garganos. The Marauder Captain met the Ice Warriors with shallow greetings, and said to take what they wished and be off as soon as possible. The Ice Warriors took another ship and restocked on equipment and ammunition. By now the White Marauder Captain had grown impatient and sent them on their way. Harron was at wits end with the arrogant captain and the Chapter Master forbade him from coming to conflict with another member of the Astartes. With transport regained, the Chapter now sought to return to Forlond, a Sector controlled by the Catachan 122nd whom they fought with against the Black Legion in M39. It was only a week’s travel from their location and they were hopeful that they would remember their old ties. By the weeks end they reached Forlond. At first the Catachans were uneasy about the cursed chapter, but Inquisitor Tornhelm set them right as he recalled well the battle fought from old records. The Inquisitor was stationed on the planet from the command of his Inquisitorial battle barge. He was from here able to monitor activity in the Eye of Terror from a relatively safe distance from harm. Tornhelm offered the Ice Warriors the hospitality of his halls, and prepared to have them sent home within the month with no delay. The Chapter Master felt a new sense of confidence with an Inquisitor on his side. But as he revealed his tale of woe to him, he thought it best to leave out their imprisonment in the warp, at fear of the Inquisitor turning on him. The Chapter Master instead said that they had journeyed into the Eye of Terror after their ordeal on Hestia so that they may conduct vengeance on the forces of Chaos for he destruction of the Cadian 94th.The Inquisitor chose not to question them on it. They enjoyed his company for a time till they were ready to depart. The Inquisitor could spare a ship and a navigator to bring them home, but said that this was their journey to make. The Chapter Master thanked him again and soon the Ice Warriors were once again on their way home to Aura with lighter hearts.

To return home was unfortunately not the Ice Warriors fate just yet. Now it turned to make them suffer once more. The navigator took them to the location where Aura was supposed to be, but instead found themselves near an apparent Deadworld. The Chapter Master was angry and confused at this misfortune and thought it best to land and rest for a while and set off again later once things were thought over. The ship made planet fall and a group of marines went in search of any life on the planet. No records of it even existed within the ships database. The surface was a grey mountainous of rock and sand. The only living thing on the planet was moss growing in tufts. For two days they rested and prepared to set off once again with hope of this time arriving in the correct location. Their departure was surprisingly halted once again by another unexpected event. The sands of the planet begun to shift and rock tumbled from cliffs. A massive scale earthquake shook the ship for a few minutes till it passed. The silence that followed was all too unnerving. Then, as if fate now moved to deal its fatal blow, the ship given to them by the Inquisitor fell into a great chasam that opened directley bellow its feet. Those who had escaped rushed to the cliffs edge but could see no remains, only darkness. All 200 Marines that were still within the ship had fallen to a certain death. The Chapter Master and two of his captains were lucky to still be alive. For two weeks the remaining Ice Warriors debated over what their next move should be. Some suggested a recovery mission while others wanted to begin searching for civilisation. They had gotten nowhere in this time, and were no closer to a decision, till out of the chasm strode the ancient Necron’tyr, and with them came legions of Immortals who bombarded the survivors with gauss fire. The Chapter Master rallied the remaining Ice Warriors together. They would employ chapter tactics, but with no way of conducting a drop assault, they would now drive the Necrons into the chasms entrance as to limit the amount of troops they could throw into the fight. The Devastators lent support from afar and the Tactical Marines held of the narrow pass with bolter fire. The Chapter Master and his Honour Guard would hold the first rank in case any made it close enough to make it to melee, but soon would they grow tired. Metal bodies dropped to the ground and rose up again to re-join the fight. The Ice Warriors struggled to keep them down for good. Soon the Necron Lord himself would come to face the Chapter Master. Bolter fire glanced off his metal frame as the Lord came to grips with his foe. The truth was that the old marine was never going to outmatch the Necron in combat, yet he accepted his challenge. The two combatants fought till the Necron Lord managed to bring his Warsythe down on the Chapter Masters exposed shoulder. His armour broke like plastic and he fell to his knees. The Lord now finished his foe with a swipe to the neck. Captain Harron of the 2nd Company now stood forth and yelled challenge to the jubilant Lord. He did not wait for a reply and immediately rammed his chainsword into his chest. The lord fell with a spark and a hiss. Harron now proceeded to rip through the Necron ranks with some madness. The fallen Lord, in typical Necron fashion, reanimated behind the captain and turned to face him. Harron was ready to finish him once and for all. Soon it was evident that Harron was the greater foe as he decapitated the lord and drove his chainsword into his spine. This time he would not rise again. The Immortals made a tactical withdrawal to the tomb to regroup, and once more, silence fell.

Harron mourned for his fallen master but had no time to spare. Inside the ship was their only means of contacting aid. If they were to have any hope of escape they would need to venture into the Necron Tomb. Each man knew perfectly well he most probably would never return but each one was willing to follow their captain. Harron now led his warriors into the darkness of the tomb, their power armour hissing from the cooling systems. As they wandered further and further into the deep, though the dark did little to hinder their eyesight, they became all but lost in the tomb. Soon they saw a faint red glow and as they drew nearer they saw the ship ablaze and in poor state. First priority was to search the wreckage for survivors. They went through the wreckage and found four surviving marines in the blaze, though two of them were severely injured. A squad of marines was instructed to reach the surface and to attend to the wounded. Harron quickly discovered the intact communications array and attempted to make contact with any nearby craft in the area. They tried for hours till an uneasy groan came out of the distance. The marines readied themselves in case the Necrons returned in numbers. Harron now was at his most desperate. Soon a reply was heard coming from the vox. Harron answered with haste and gave little time for questions as he swiftly told them of their situation and location. They had little chance to respond as Harron now quickly turned his thoughts to reaching the surface. They tried to contact the squad that had left with the wounded hours ago with no luck. The Xenos had jammed transmission and the vox within the ship was rendered useless. As the mechanical sounds grew louder and they now thought it best to flee to the surface without delay. The marines now sprinted back up for their lives. Soon the chittering of wings was heard in the distance as the scarabs were now on their tails. As they crawled their way to the surface they now turned to open fire behind them only to see no enemy following them. The sound of the scarabs was gone and all seemed calm. The marines saw the squad that had departed with the wounded and immediately ran towards them. They informed them of the situation and readied to move. They found the high ground above the sands as night fell. Their power armours CO2 levels could last for hundreds of years without refilling but now even they was running low. Things became that more desperate. Then out of the dark came a small cruiser of some kind. The Ice Warriors fired rounds into the air to attract the attention of the ship as it passed above. The craft landed on the ground and the marines ran to meet their saviours. Though some were suspicious of who would be coming to their aid, in the end it was an Imperial Trade ship on route to Ultima, just to the north. They got them aboard and set course for Marcragge. Harron now for the first time in many years was sure of his return and rested. The Ice Warriors would finally have their triumph.

On the year 995.M41 the Ice Warriors reached Marcragge. They were heartily greeted by the 6th Company Captain of the Ultramarines, Epathus, and prepared to mobilise his fleet to escort the Ice Warriors home personally. Epathus knew their path had been filled with misfortune but now he saw it fit that they should return home. A sudden change of heart indeed but this is due to the fact that they have been missing for a long period of time and the Ultramarines feel partly responsible after denying entry to a cursed founding chapter. After stopping in the Kronicus Sector to fight a Tau expansion force, they arrived within the Hibernus Sub-Sector. The sight was less than expected. Eldar of Craftworld Alaitoc had attacked the people of the Sub-Sector for a motive unknown to the any but themselves. The Ultramarines 6th Company and the remaining hundred or so Ice Warriors prepared to reclaim their home. The Eldar struck first at the Ultramarines fleet, taking heavy casualties on both sides. The Ice Warriors then organised a drop assault into the Eldar webway gates on Etherca while the Ultramarines occupied the Eldar fleet in orbit. Soon Farseer Starbane would attempt to cut off the Ice Warriors from Ultramarine support by blocking communications within the system. The Eldar then ambushed the Ice Warriors outpost on Kyrich with little success as Harron drove the Eldar into a close quarter fight within the outpost’s walls. Starbane, with depleted forces and after much brutal fighting, had little choice but to withdrawal to the Craftworld. The Ultramarines departed the Sub-Sector soon after, the two chapters now battle brothers.

In a few months Inquisitor Tornhelm arrived with the Catachan 122nd Regiment and aided in the rebuilding of the Sub-Sector. Aura was left untouched by the Eldar (being seen as of little importance to them) and so the Ice Warriors returned to their Homeworld. Harron was instated as 1st Company Captain while Captain Ares of the 5th Company took on the role of Chapter Master. Harron saw no folly in this as Ares was indeed a strategist and commander without peer. Harron would be the first to swear loyalty to the new master. On the year 998.M41 the Ice Warriors were returned to the full 10 companies and near 1000 marines strong. The Sub-Sector has long since returned to stability and the Ice Warriors on the year 999.M41 are returning to the Eye of Terror to repay their long debt to Inquisitor Tornhelm. One aspect not calculated was the 13th Black Crusade that would tear through the Imperium very soon. To add to this the Mechanicus have not only discovered a possible cure to the gene seed mutation, but also evidence of a possible Chaos taint that has spread throughout the chapter. The chapter would soon find itself in dark times once again.

The Ice Warriors

 

In the M36, the Cursed Founding of the Adeptus Astartes took place.

 

- I have this thing about things and this thing is part of that thing.

 

Now, if you followed that then bravo!

 

To me, it's a very abrupt way to start off; I don't dispute the fact of it, but I feel it could be worked in to the opening part and be less of sledgehammer to the "Guess-What's-Going-To-Happen" portion of the brain.

 

The High Lords of Terra could only watch as its attempts failed at restoring the flawed gene seeds. Though some escaped mutation they were cursed by some misfortune.

 

- I'd say assume the reader knows, 'cause if they don't they probably won't have found the IA or got through the security systems installed in the Liber (don't ask ;)).

Especially as they would likely be the only organisation to have the ability to render the changes you describe.

- To my knowledge, they wouldn't have had anything to do with it to begin with; in fact I doubt they would even be informed.

 

Don't forget that each Chapter is required to send a geneseed tithe to the AdMech, so that they have ample opportunity to experiment to their hearts content.

How newly constructed? 'cause ship construction in 40 isn't a simple thing, especially not something to be radicaly altered once the Chapters condition was evident.

 

 

That's just the opening section for three reasons; I'm at work and should be working, there's quite a lot to absorb there and because I'm trying to expand my "being Nice" horizons.

I am relativley new to the 40k backround and dont know every detail. I will ask questions where I can as I fully trust your judgment.

 

If possible I would like some new sujestions on how a chapter gene seed could be altered to the point it that they became cold blooded marines. The salamanders were just my first thought as I knew they had some form of skin abnormality.

 

Also I was not aware that the parent chapters would have no involvment with the proccess. A blunder on my part again.

The Ice Warriors

 

In the M36, the Cursed Founding of the Adeptus Astartes took place.

 

- I have this thing about things and this thing is part of that thing.

 

Now, if you followed that then bravo!

 

To me, it's a very abrupt way to start off; I don't dispute the fact of it, but I feel it could be worked in to the opening part and be less of sledgehammer to the "Guess-What's-Going-To-Happen" portion of the brain.

 

The High Lords of Terra could only watch as its attempts failed at restoring the flawed gene seeds. Though some escaped mutation they were cursed by some misfortune.

 

- I'd say assume the reader knows, 'cause if they don't they probably won't have found the IA or got through the security systems installed in the Liber (don't ask :P).

 

The Ice Warriors were established on the gene seed of the Salamanders, altered and toyed with. It was evident that the Mechanicus was by no means as knowledgeable as the God Emperor and so the gene seed failed.

 

- Salamanders bit, fine, the rest: We know. You know we know. We know you know we know.

 

In hopes of restoring the appearance of the gene seed...

1)Ok, first of all I have two issues when it comes to writing short stories. Im crap at it and I come from New Zealand (we have a terrible way of wording things). So if I come on to harsh in the first line my bad.

 

2)Next of all I did that because I was discovering all this information, I wanted to expand on it.

 

3)Above all I have to either assume my readers are either very imformed on the topic or complete idiots. It is difficult to cover both.

 

4)I was not well informed. A mistake on my part.

This is why learning can be fun!

 

Check out the Librarium on the board, it has lots of articles about loads of different things - background will help you here obviously - and is almost always more reliable than something like Lexicanum.

Actually it is a geneseed malfunction. It is how the geneseed reacts to the radiation of Nocturne that causes their skin and eye changes. The geneseed then already has an inbuilt suseptibility to certain types of radiation, messing with the geneseed could easily cause it to react to other factors for similar yet different results. The Salamanders are a very good choice of parent Chapter for people wanting a uniform across their successor Chapter skin and eye irregularity.

It isn't that sacred, it is sacred to a point but not a stupidly "no alterations EVER" point. It was designed and built just before and during the Great Crusade, all the way up to the Heresy and after, it has went through numerous marks all featuring different adaptions and features. All this done by the Adeptus Mechanicus. It is very easily concievable that they would make alterations for this Chapter to be useful.

 

Heck we are talking about the people behind the Cursed Founding who messed with arguably even more sacred geneseed.

I agree with this, I doubt the Salamanders would be in the know, they wouldn't like the idea of people messing with their geneseed in the first place.

 

 

@Overlord-Rakszan: I actually think you've done a pretty good job with this Chapter, it is a lot more believable and balanced than many of the Cursed Founding Chapters we see in the Liber. That said the Adeptus Mechanicus in whole wouldn't have been the ones directly working on the geneseed, it would have been the Adeptus Biologicus (admittedly part of the Ad Mech, but the section focused on biological matters).

That's an odd choice of comparison, since stone isn't always pale. Where I'm from, for instance, all we've got is muddy-coloured sandstone. :)

As a quick note, the word you want is spelled pale. A pail with an 'I' is actually a term for a bucket or bucket-like thing (for example, 'fetch me a pail of water from that well').

I thought I'd point that out since it's not actually a typo, as such, just not quite the right word. ;)

The Ice Warriors armour is completly white exept for black trims used to detonate rank.

Detonate means 'to make explode' - I think you want denote, instead. Unless you're really anti-authority, in which case fair play. :D

...I thought I'd bring these for your consideration.

The first one is based more closely on your idea. It also, however, looks a lot like the Luna Wolves' scheme, which is why I thought I'd mix it up with an Ice blue winged skull because come on, they're Ice Warriors. :P The second one is an effort to further distance your Chapter's appearance from the LW, whilst keeping the 'mostly white, bit of black and Ice Blue' theme going.

If neither of them suit your mental image of what the chapter should look like, say so - I can always try something else! :D

The Ice Warriors are organised into the 10 chapters as dictated by the Codex Astartes but features an irregular amount of Dreadnoughts within each Company, some having up to 8 at once. This is partly due to the fact that it is very easy to recover fallen Ice Warriors who yet still live as their cooling power armour can also activate to slip them into status if injuries are critical. The Ice Warriors also have very few Assault Marines as they’re not yet capable of manoeuvring the fast Jump Packs with such slow reflexes and accidents have occurred previously. Only those daring enough decide to risk their lives in assaulting the enemy from above.

Companies, rather than Chapters. That one's kind of important, and not just me being pedantic.

I'd shy away from mentioning the actual numbers of Dreadnoughts - just saying you have an irregular amount of them works fine. ^_^

Cap'n Juan's already covered everything else, I think.

For a first IA, this is very good - it certainly makes my first efforts look pretty darn awful!

The stone comparison was almost a, how do you put it? More of a "Lets think of something random that kinda fits the brief" sitation.

And I can spell prefectly fin thanks. :)

 

Also I really like the colour schemes you have done. They fit it well. I have a very poor mental image in my head and this helps fill in some blanks. Just as a helpful note, they also kinda sound like this:

Hi. i'd like to have some input when i saw the part about your genetic mutation.

I know its science fiction, but bear with me. Unless you are telling me your Space Marines are no longer made from humans and are crabs of some sort, oxygenated blood carried by hemoglobin will always be red.

Even Mr.Freeze's blood is red.

 

Being unable to access flamers and plasma weaponry is a serious setback for a chapter. Since you say you use Liquid Nitrogen (which actually really doesnt freeze anything in reality, but nevermind) Why dont you say your Chapter uses modified flamers firing "Frostbite" liquid and plasma guns are modified to fire Frostbite blobs.

 

Your Chaplains are adept navigators you say, but in what sense? Planetside? Or on space vessels? When it comes to vessels, navigation is always handled by special navigators who are mutants that have the ability to path through the Warp that a normal human cannot.

 

Im not very good at the full extant background lore so i aint gonna comment on your history. My 2 cents :)

Its always useful to have some one who actually understands the science rather than have me rewrite the laws of physics. ^_^

 

Just to clarify:

-The whole blood thing was a sort of "Hey lets give this a shot" moment. Please pretend it never happened.

 

-I have made changes to the Weaponry section concerning your advice on the Plasma and Melta guns. I have made a thing called Cryogenic guns or Cryo guns for short. Works in the exact same fashion except its brutally cold.

 

-Sorry about the Chaplin thing. They are gifted Planetary navigators as they can work out their position from looking at star arrangements (and its not because they can remember every star in the galaxy).

UPDATE:

Soon I will be updating a timeline of events from the Ice Warriors founding till 999.M41 onto a separate article (This will include events up till the close of the 41st Millennium). I will update where I can on this current article as some events need to be tweaked.

 

With the chapters misfortune seemingly over, the Ice Warriors have entered an age of prosperity. Unbeknownst to all, Abaddon moves to raise the 13th Black Crusade as the Ice Warriors make their way to the Eye of Terror. With a suspected gene seed taint discovered, how long now till the Inquisition catches up with them? In a galaxy filled with war and death, none shall be spared.
