Praetors of Orpheus

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I just finished some Sterguard conversions. I used bits from the Space marine commander, sanguinary guard, death company, tactical squad, terminator, and iron hands upgrade kits, as well as one of the guys from the Masters of Chapter box. There is also a shoulder pad from the chaos biker kit and an ammo feed from attack bike kit.

Would anyone have a problem playing against the guy with combi-melta? It looks small enough to me to be a one-shot weapon.

I've got more mold lines to finish off, a leftover blood drop on the combi-melta, and some general filing to do. Any other suggestions?

Cool and unique, a nice use of parts, man. Great job on that!

Out of curiousity, how were the Finecast Iron Hands parts? Pretty decent condition, or ugly as sin?

@1000heathens: The finecast Iran Hands bits were pretty good. There was a lot of flashing around some of the bits, but hardly any mold lines to speak of, and the brittleness of the resin made it easier to files those off anyway. The heads were especially good, in my opinion. The only problem I had was that the torsos don't fit with the backs from the various marine kits. If I remember corectly, the back of the torsos are "female" and the chestplates are "male." The iron hands chestplates are just awkward and took a fair amount of filing/cutting to get a flush fit. But I definitely think the bits would look great mixed in with your Astral Claws.

I like your efforts. The models look like what they is.

The purity seal on Mr 4's bolter doesn't need to be there. Looks too big and out of place.

Only 5? Oh go on. 40 is a good number....

Thanks for the feedback regarding my sternguard guys. I thought the purity seal was a bit much on the bolter, but I'm scared of the damage taking it off may do. Any suggestions?

Anyway, here is my finished tac squad. I special ordered the Praetors of Orpheus shoulder pads from GW's site, as well as the tac squad pads. If anyone has the same idea, a bit of a warning: the tac squad shoulder pads are WAY small.

I still have to matte varnish them, but other than that these guys are pretty much done. C&C is of course welcome.

Without further ado...

Hey guys thanks for all the nice comments. It feels good to have your work validated by others.

@Andrew J & Pistorius: Thanks for noticing the weathering. I was a little worried at first that I might have been overdoing it, but I'm pretty pleased with they way they turned out. It's always made sense to me for models to look war-torn.

@Andrew J: A lot of thought went into picking the Praetors of Orpheus, thanks for noticing them. I felt like their fluff (the very small amount that is available) was pretty cool, and I liked that they have such close ties with the Adeptus Mechanicus on Mars. In my opinion, that allows for reasoning behind some cool models, and also accounts for a variety of power armor marks in an army, not to mention some of the Forge World vehicles. In the near future, I intend to add some Iron Armor marines into my squads, as well as the Forge World rhino and predator. Their relationship with mars was also the reason that I included Iron Hands bits on my models.

Regarding modeling, I knew I wanted to paint white with some sort of trim color, and the Praetors color scheme was perfect. I also knew that I wanted sculpted shoulder pads. In the end, it was a toss up between the Mentors and the Praetors of Orpheus. I've seen a few more Mentors models out there though, so I went with the underdog. I can't wait to get my conversion beamer Master of the Forge built.

Thanks again for the comments everyone, and as always C&C is more than welcome, now and in the future.

I'll update over the weekend again, probably with a small batch of scouts.

Cheers.

@lorenzo ishivar kain: Thanks!

Happy Saturday everybody.

As I mentioned earlier, here is a small scout squad that I've finished as part of my armies on parade. There are only 5 of them, and I know they're not really armed in a way that makes much sense, but I just had to get them built and painted. The heads are the system trooper heads from Pig Iron Productions. Very nice pieces, although they were a little hard to file down, as they are connected to the sprue by quite large metal roots.

I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out, especially the lense on the sergeant's bolt pistol scope. The sergeant is my favorite. As always, I'm all ears for any C&C.

Here they are...

Thanks everyone!

outstanding work!

what did you do for the bases? colors?

Thanks!

The bases that are more than just mud and grass are old factory round bases from micro art studios. They have a great selection of stuff, check them out if you get a chance.

The white is just ceramite white with a wash and highlight. I used sepia and mud washses in small places for the grime. The blue is army painter crystal blue with highlights of citadel ice blue.

Nice weathering! Is it paint or pigment or a hybrid of the two?

The weathering is several layers of drybrushed paint: rhinox brown or whatever it's called, scorched brown, calthan brown, and graveyard earth. I used some pigments for some vehicles that ill be posting soon, but I haven't tried ut with infantry yet. Maybe when I get around to painting the sternguard.

Thanks again everyone, I'll update again soon.

Awesome work mate!

These are awesome and just the way I like Marines to look. <_<

Thanks peeps! I like my marines, obviously, very dirty and beat up too. Glad I'm not the only one.

Here's my Dakka Predator, which is also quite dirty and beat up. I used MIG pigments for much of the dirt effect, in addition to drybrushed brown mud ecipe mentioned above. I also used the new texture paints around the bottoms of the tank, and have found them much more helpful in this regard than for the actual basing of models.

I matte varnished this guy today and was VERY upset to see how it muted the blue and silver. Has anyone had a similar experience? I was using standard GW purity seal from a can. Perhaps it's just me; does anyone notice a huge difference between the blue on the tank and on the marines, besides the obvious gloss?

By the way, Sejanus was the head of Praetorian Guard at some point way back in the day in ancient Rome. Figured I'd name my tanks/characters in such a fashion.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the predator; he was fun to paint.

Three things:

1) Fantastic colors and beautiful application! The weathering is particularly believable.

2) Where did you get that laurel-wreathed head for the 3rd vet?? I'd really like to find it!

3) The predator is great, but my only comment is it looks a little... dalmation-esque? It looks good, but I think the weathering would look more believable if the chipped paint were concentrated on sharper edges/places where it would naturally wear off, especially around the treat guards, etc. Either way it looks awesome.

Keep it up!

These guys look terrific, the weathering is just right and you've pulled off a very tricky main colour very well.

That said, funny you should name your tank 'Sejanus.' Ever read Horus Rising? :(

Kaladin is right: it is from the sanguinary guard sprue. Lots of great heads in there. I just shaved off the blood drops (rather poorly in retrospect). You might be able to find them at bitz barn as well.

I see what you mean about the dalmation thing. I was aware of it in the process and thought they were random enough, but perhaps not. I tried to mix up the size and color of the chips. I'll keep your advice in mind for my next vehicles. Unfortunately, I've got a land raider and a razorback that probably look just as spotty. Thanks for the keen eye.

Thanks for the comments AGPO. I have read Horus Rising in fact, and everything else by Abnett. I guess I read it too long ago though to remember what Sejanus does or who he is exactly. It was an amazing book, so I'm a bit embarrassed that I don't remember Sejanus. Oh well. The tank will just have to fight extra hard to overcome the blemish of sharing a name with a traitor.

Thanks again everyone. Will likely update again over the weekend.

Loving those rust streaks

Forgot to comment on these: the rust streaks were really believable! I feel like that's a majorly underused technique for weathering that would show up all over the place in real life. Nice job!

These look great, just how I envisioned them from the original 5th edition Codex background. The Mars link was why I wanted to have my lot as successors of a UM 2nd Founding, as I wanted to use lots of old FW type kit.

I am contemplating changing to Imperial Fists because for their usual inexplicable reasons GW have changed the chapter in the digital codex to just making them excessively codex rigid to the point of it being detrimental and there is no mention of Mars at all :P If I was you I'd just go with the original background or trying to rationalise both into one. Although extreme AdMec links and extreme codex adeherence will need some creativity. Based on your models I don't see that being a problem :D
