the voting link has the montage with a close up of Tycho's face and chest that shows off the detail better than these wide shots...

i tried a lot of new things on this mini such as a corpse on the base, zenithal style black (instead of just straight line highlights), battle damage on black, sculpting a face mask, and doing a solid black backing to the base rubble (hopefully giving the impression that there is more structure to the rubble behind the minis, instead of a rather convenient rockpile), and much more...

this is the furthest i've ever pushed outside of my comfort zone so far...

hopefully producing my best work yet, but that's up to you to decide...

i'll have a full write-up on my blog soon, where i will go into all the experiments and ideas behind this piece...

thanks for looking...

i hope you like him...

cheers

Very nice

Agreed. He's very well done :D

The only nit-pick that I have with the model is actually the Ork on the base, who's right arm looks too rigid, but it doesn't really matter that much.

thanks for all the kind words guys...

i'm glad Tycho has been a success...

it will be a while before i get a chance to do the painting article on my blog, since the video card on my laptop crapped out on me last month...

i have to replace the motherboard:(...

as soon as i can get some more time on my girl's computer, i'll get the article up...

until then, here is the post for the build:

i wiil get deeper into the black when i can, but it's really amazingly simple...

the first broad highlight is P3 Coal Black, which is very blue...

this defined the shape of the highlights, but remained very subtle...

now, normally i would have done a layer of Greatcoat Grey next, as it is the next color up from dark to light in the greys...

i decided to skip that and go straight to Ironhull Grey...

this was a big jump in tone, but i kept the paint super thin, so it didn't seem as bright as it would have at full thickness...

it was still too bright, so i played with layers of the Grey, P3 Flesh Wash (which is very maroon) and Armor Wash (very blue), going back and forth a couple of times...

tha's it...

i left the major highlights there so the battle damage would stand out (just using Thamar Black and Trollblood Highlight for the chips)...

the last fineline highlights are Cryx Bane Highlight, and spots of Trollblood Highlight...

thanks again...

cheers

jah
