My DA Army Painting Exploits

Eeps

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

So far this thread is just a duplication of an opening post on dakka, but I am keen to see what other DA players reckon to the army so far.

By way of intro, I've always had problems getting the motivation to paint much. Pondering why this was, I realised that I had a few problems (other than preturnatural laziness)

1) No dedicated painting area - Its a pain in the arse to put up and tear down if you only have a little while to paint

2) Hate painting big things - Had a crack with the GW spray gun to paint tanks, and couldnt get it to work. Got disconsolate and gave up (see end of old thread)

3) Too many models - I realised that I just kept buying stuff and not painting anything, as I like buying and building more than painting.

4) Wrong kind of models to paint - Fed up of doing millions of troops, I wanted a small elite type army for a change after Jump FTs and Goff Orks.

How to remedy this!

I bought a desk+ nice chair + lamp from IKEA, so I had a little spot to paint. To go on my desk, I bought an airbrush to do big things:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/7/23/393370_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Deathwing,%20Terminator%20Armor.JPG

You'll also notice the tasteful mirror to the side. This was a cunning piece of negotiation, so the dedicated painting zone could be sold to the other half as a dressing table for hair/makeup purposes. Ninja skillz.

Onto points 3 & 4.

I'd enjoyed painting termis and speeders for my other army, so I sat there thinking "hmm, what small, elite army is there with a lot of speeders and terminators out there? Ideally I'd also like something with an old book, so I dont get accused of bandwagoneering."

What could possibly fit the bill?? If you are not a zombie (or have read the thread title), then clearly some Deathwing is the way forward!

So says I, a I shall start a new army, but Ill buy it one unit at a time, and paint it as I go. That way I won't run into my usual problem of having to climb up a painting mountain. What started out well intentioned quickly went wrong, as I got drunk, went to the casino, and won a load of money.

Bollocks says I, I shall invest some of this in toy soldiers. To this end, I managed to buy the following (admittedly not all at once, but I did manage to buy it all without painting anything first).

Here's some pix so far:

Firstly, the core of any Deathwing army. Mr Dave Belial, the man so cool he doesn't need an Iron Halo. Pretty simple kitbash of some assault termi bits with some of the DA upgrade sprue thrown in for good measure. He also gets a skeleton!

Dave being such a cool character needs some friends to follow him around hitting things with hammers.

Sergeant Sofiel:

If deathwing had red jumpers, he'd be wearing one.

Squad 2 is ably lead by Sergeant Zuriel (and his exquisite hair):

And another cyclone:

After punching through 11 termis, I felt it time for a change and painted up a speeder. This basically put me up to c. 750 points of the army painted. Elite armies are great for making lazy people feel a false sense of accomplishment:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/7/23/393393_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Deathwing,%20Terminator%20Armor.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/7/23/393392_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Deathwing,%20Terminator%20Armor.JPG

To round out my progress to date, I've also managed to kick off painting a predator. Fully magnetised up, so I can swap variants around fairly easily:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/7/23/393395_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Deathwing,%20Terminator%20Armor.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/7/23/393397_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Deathwing,%20Terminator%20Armor.JPG

Happy to hear any thoughts you guys have, and also what you reckon I should paint post the predator being finished?

Looking good so far. Keep up the good work.

Thanks brother. I just wish I could have got a vow in to help out the side before the cut-off

The pred is now finished:

Any suggestions as to what you'd like to see next?

Looks good! Keep at it.

I'm just kind of hesitant right now to paint much of my Dark Angels. I've got a fully painted army I've been using since 3rd, with a little bit of everything. The Storm Talon is an awesome model, and I've got two of them. My local play group has been very nice in letting me play with them in a Dark Angels list. I'll probably paint it in DA Green and continue to use it and just hope my opponents continue to be nice.

"What army are you playing?" My opponent curiously asks.

"Oh, one of my favorites. Dark Angels. With a little bit of everything," I reply enthusiastically.

"Deathwing, or a bunch of bikes?" He says suspiciously.

"Neither. I have one squad of Deathwing Terminators, and a Ravenwing Landspeeder. Everything else is regular DA," I reply.

"Oh. OK. Wow. Good for you playing with such an old school army!" He says. Translation: Easy victory.

"Hey, um, ya know this is an old Codex, and I really, really want to try out this new model. The Storm Talon. Mind if I use it?"

"Sure! Go ahead. I thought DA could use it..."

Turn Two, the Storm Talon zooms onto the board, and the pain begins... :P

All looks amazing Eeps. I love the fact you've named all your DW too. Front glacis plate on the Pred is very characterful ;). Btw Magnetised Pred is a neat way to cover all (weapon) options, but yet to see anyonr attempt the dozer blade which is a very useful extra on a Pred if you have the points to spare .

Thanks all for your kind words.

I've narrowed down the next item on the agenda to:

Another pred

Another speeder

Termi Libby

Any preference?

I also need to get some transfers on what I've painted so far, but am having problems finding the FW transfer sheet I ordered when I started putting the army together.

100% vote for the Libby so on he goes:

Libby WiP

Was a pretty bad cast, so needed some GS work. Got a sword on him rather than the staff for 50% works better in the game 50% easier to transport. Its a GK power sword, GS'd off the inquisition stuff. My photography is pretty horrible, but I want to brighten him up a bit so he sits well with the deathwing guys in a unit, so hes quite a light blue.

He's nameless so far, so Ill leave his name to this forum.

and the Libby is complete.

Overall, a fun model to paint, but loads of fiddly bits I kept forgetting when I'd be doing a different colour and then have to go back and do. Went for a green force weapon to differentiate it from the other power weapons/claws I'll use which will be blue. Also didn't want to overkill blue on the model

I think I'll do the other pred next, as I've been getting really good value from the preds in games recently. Usually have 1 as dakka one as anti armour, leaving people to either try and kill an AV13 vehicle in cover, or hit the scary termis with hammers that are running at them. There is no right choice!

If you'd like to see something that's not a pred though, I'm more than happy to hear your suggestions!

Nice Work, I'm liking the muted blue on the Libby.

You have a great output too, well done on getting the dedicated 'work' station :) , I personally have to set up the lounge coffee table in the evenings(or else the kids like to help themselves to bits).

Time for an update.

Not a painting one initially, but I've built the 2 tac squads and got some sand on them and the scouts.

Also picked up the GW paint station and bits to go with it to enhance my painting whilst watching the olympics experience.

Here's all of it:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/5/398070_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Tactical%20Squad.JPG

Nothing particularly exciting with regards to the tac squads. Used the DA vets for the sergeants, and mixed in various odds and ends to give all the models some bling. Magnetised up the sergeants and the weapons specialists to give me some more options for playing (who knows might even get some free weapons with the new book):

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/5/398071_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Tactical%20Squad.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/5/398072_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Tactical%20Squad.JPG

One set of options for the sarges:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/5/398073_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Tactical%20Squad.JPG

And Saturday Night Fever time:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/5/398074_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Tactical%20Squad.JPG

Specialists in various configs:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/5/398077_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Tactical%20Squad.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/5/398075_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Tactical%20Squad.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/5/398076_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Tactical%20Squad.JPG

I also felt like a bit of a kitbash, so I dived into the bits box and put together a PA Chapter Master with 2x claws and a storm bolter:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/5/398078_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Tactical%20Squad.JPG

(and without woeful mold line!)

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/5/398079_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Tactical%20Squad.JPG

Pred is cleaned up, GS's, Brass Etched and primed. Just about to bust out the airbrush, and will hopefully have some further progress to report on soon.

Another magnetised pred notched up.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/7/398864_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Predator.JPG

I was initially planning on painting a dread, but I havent really used them at all since the edition change. They fill basically the same role in the army as the preds, but have lower front armour and fewer hullpoints than the preds for more or less the same points.

As such I think I'll probably pop out another group of termis next.

Reasonably minor update, but something I'm really happy about!

I've wanted to make a TH/SS Belial (Steve Belial) to go with the 2xLC Belial (Dave Belial, seen above). Been thinking of various options to use as the base, either Lysander or the FW hammer guy whose name escapes me. Finally hit some inspiration a while back whilst talking about finally finishing a Space Hulk full game with a mate of mine.

The TH/SS Sarge out of Space Hulk!

Bought one, and it arrived at work this afternoon. Spent a fair bit of time de-BA blinging him, and re-DA blinging him.

Got him finished and primed ready for painting tomorrow. Huzzah!

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/14/401418_sm-Belial,%20Dark%20Angels.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/14/401421_sm-Belial,%20Dark%20Angels.JPG

Lost some chunks of thumb in the process hacking off all the space vampire markings, and done some good hiding of holes with purity seals, but I'm pretty happy with the final results.

I've also extended the flirtation with power armoured models by putting together a few devs/tac squad HW subs. 4 Heavy Bolter guys and 2 Lascannon guys.

Fancied trying some Heavey Bolter Devs for a little while and I've got a fair few dev sprues laying around after buying them for missiles for my codex BA Flesh Tearer army. I'm getting good value out of Auto/Las Predators for taking out high AV stuff, so I thought some cheap devs for some ranged dakkadakka would be good!

As per, Sarge from vet box and is magnetised, other devs pretty standard as they are the babies of the group so haven't had much time to accrue bling.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/14/401417_sm-Belial,%20Dark%20Angels.JPG

Speeder discussed in the post above is about half painted, will def finish that then move on to Steve Belial and then I reckon either some Tacs or a Raider.

All looking pretty excellent.

The magnetisng sergeants and specialist weapon marines arms is a neat way to future-proof models (as far as one can) from previous poor weapon choices :(.

My only comment would be the bone-coloured sticks/vegetation on the termy and Librarian's bases might need to be a different colour as they are a bit distracting maybe.

Thanks mate - I see what you are saying, they are pretty close in colour. I was basically aiming for a dead grass and tumbleweed sort of thing. I'm heading off to hobbyco at lunchtime today, so I'll chck out some other options while I'm in there.

Time for a bit more progress, and a description of how I paint my DW scheme.

The Speeder first:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/20/403836_sm-Belial,%20Dark%20Angels.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/20/403835_sm-Belial,%20Dark%20Angels.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/20/403834_sm-Belial,%20Dark%20Angels.JPG

Similar to the first one. I use 2 of them often, so its nice to have a couple painted up. Don't think I've ever used 3 though, so the third might move to the back of the painting line up.

It does look a bit better than the above in real life, but its not really well lit here. I'm def going to pick up a light tent in the not too distant future. Theres a few photography nerds at work, so I'll get some pro tips off them about where to get one.

I had some time to work on Belial Mk II as well this evening, and I thought I'd take the opportunity to show in stages how I do the DW armour scheme:

After priming, Zandri dust and then Ushabti Bone with an airbrush:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/20/403837_sm-Belial,%20Dark%20Angels.JPG

Then chuck on a pretty thick coat of Seraphim Sepia:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/20/403838_sm-Belial,%20Dark%20Angels.JPG

Once dry it should look like this:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/20/403839_sm-Belial,%20Dark%20Angels.JPG

I've let it pool a bit on the shield in places, but its not the end of the world.

Drybush Screaming Skull over the top. Lots of passes with not a lot of paint seems to work best

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/20/403840_sm-Belial,%20Dark%20Angels.JPG

Finally, a quick final drybrush with Praxetl White to get the high highlights. Again very dry drybrush.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/20/403841_sm-Belial,%20Dark%20Angels.JPG

Then just paint all the bits! Takes not long at all, and looks pretty solid.

Will work to complete Belial and then do a Land Raider for him and his chums.

Ta for now
