I, Cactus, do vow to complete a Dark Angels librarian in terminator armour (145pts) before the end of September.

Awesome sauce Cactus. You have some great old models in there. All you need is a Dark Vengeance one in there ti bring it up to date with pretty much every generation. A really cool-looking squad indeed. I'd be honoured to face that across the table :(.

Cheers

I

Brother Cactus, I think I've said this before but I'll say it again anyway: I am extremely jealous of your bone color! Looks very clean, and the coverage is perfect. The mixing and matching of older models in one squad speaks volumes about the perseverance of the First Legion in their quest for atonement. I can't wait to see some more models painted.

Brother Kovash, I'm not sure you'd say that if you saw them up close. Some of the legs are a bit sketchy. However they don't take weeks to paint (unlike my earlier methods) and look pretty nifty on the battlefield, and that's what counts. I love building models and I get very absorbed in the fine detail but base coats and repeated layers bore me to tears. It's also a bit of a cheat because I'll never field a squad with that exact composition, I just happened to have these five that needed finishing.

I won't have much painting time over the next couple of days but I made good progress on the librarian on Saturday because I wanted to glue the arms on before Sunday's game, so I might post a WIP shot soon.

Amazingly I'm starting to suffer terminator burn-out so the next vow will be something quite different.

[edit] Emperor darn it! I painted three crux terminatuses (terminatii?) and only just noticed I forgot the crossed bones on each of them! The perils of freehanding without consulting reference material. :)

Cactus, they look awesome and you've done a great job with the white color. My only thought is that the overall look is a little too monochrome. For Jubal, I would suggest painting the raised rim of the shield with your red (which looks awesome paired with the bone color) and the little power emitter/housing on the back of the hammer in the bronze/gold color. For the 2nd Edition TH/SS, I'd recommend the same, but do the outer rim of the shield. For the two power fists, I'd probably do the outer lip of the fist in red. For the Cyclone launcher Termi, maybe a banded plate or two? I think this would all help break up the color a little and draw more attention to the great detail work you've done. I really like all the silver and bronze/gold bobs and bits you have, and overall these are fantastic models (and are a really, really cool Terminator armor through the ages display). Awesome worksmanship.

Thanks for the appreciative words guys. Bryan, you're absolutely right about the overall bland nature. When I started with this technique I couldn't think of a quick and easy way to paint thunder hammers, nor could I think of which colours to use to accentuate the storm shields, so I copped out with the intention of coming back to them later. I was wary of red in case it made the models too 'red and white' - I don't want them being mistaken for medics - but it could work if I don't let it get too bright. Another option is to use the dark green trim I was using 10+ years ago:

http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/Deathwing_armour_trim.jpg

Anyway, I expect most of you would rather see more pictures so here's the librarian so far:

http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/The%20Path%20to%20Redemption/Librarian_WIP_1.jpghttp://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/The%20Path%20to%20Redemption/Librarian_WIP_3.jpghttp://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/The%20Path%20to%20Redemption/Librarian_WIP_2.jpg

Suggestions for what to write on the two horizontal scrolls would be appreciated. He needs a name and that could go on his right leg.

Cactus, didn't really mean they were bland or uninteresting, I think they are very nice. I think breaking up the color a little more on the shield and hammer would be a bit more interesting though. While I think the dark red might be good, you're right, they could quickly be mistaken for medics, so your dark green is probably an even better idea! Very nice!

Librarian is looking very good. As far as names, could go with Ramiel, Samyaza, or Semiazaz (or variations on those) as the middle name is the name given to the leader of the Nephilim, who taught humans sorcery among other things, in the book of Enoch, the other two also being Nephilim (mostly I just like Ramiel). Or could go with more the more traditional Raphael as the archangel of knowledge. (All of these are being given as academic suggestions based on the 40K context of "angelic names" and not a call for religious discussion)

The Librarian is looking pretty sweet, I love how his force weapon turned out. I use one of the old Grey Knight metal models as my Librarian, and it's cool to see someone else an older model as well. I'd recommend Ulysses, an epic name for an epic character. :)

I know what you mean Bryan; "bland" was possibly a poor choice of words on my part. Thanks for the naming suggestions. I'll look them up in my Dictionary of Demons* and see what I think of them.

*I know they're not demons per se but the book includes angels, pre-Christian gods and a good dollop of satanic/occult oddity.

Here he is, Brother-Epistolary Ramiel:

http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/The%20Path%20to%20Redemption/Librarian_01.jpg

I'll be vowing something epic for October, just as soon as I organise all the bits for the 'before' photo.

I now the thread for October vows hasn't started yet but I've taken the photo and I really ought to go to bed so here's some blather to accompany it and I'll make the vow tomorrow. For October's step along the Path to Redemption I will paint 90 marines (including company command and a librarian), twelve tanks and a dreadnought.

http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/The%20Path%20to%20Redemption/20121001_004506.jpg

That's three space marine tactical detachments from the Epic: Armageddon army list or, as I like to call them, the Dark Angels' 7th tactical reserve company.

One tactical detachment with rhino transports, commander (Captain), vindicator and dreadnought. 475pts

One tactical detachment with rhino transports, commander (Chaplain) and hunter. 425pts

One tactical detachment with rhino transports, commander (Librarian) and razorback. 375pts

I started collecting 6mm Dark Angels when Epic: 40,000 was released and thought that it was feasible to collect the whole chapter. Unfortunately every infantry model was on the one sprue in varying quantities and it would have cost a ridiculous amount to buy enough boxes when half of them would only be for the ten or so terminators they contained. So the idea was shelved and I was content to play games with only three or four hundred marines. Fast forward fifteen years or so where we find that I have a job and eBay exists; suddenly it's a lot easier to get those sought after models to finish the collection! I have roughly 85% of the infantry now and all the tanks, but can I paint them all by the end of my Path to Redemption?

Well, that was quite a stumble. I painted a lot of tyranids in October but not much else. To my brothers in the First Legion that's a shameful display. However the arrival of my Dark Angels dice (Thanks again Paul! <_< ) and a few good games of 40k has revitalised my faith.

In November I returned to the Path by renovating my interrogator-chaplain.

As he was, with a horrible 90's style base:

http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/The%20Path%20to%20Redemption/20121119_174243.jpg

And as he is now, Interrogator-Chaplain Malaphar:

http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/The%20Path%20to%20Redemption/20121125_115228.jpghttp://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/The%20Path%20to%20Redemption/20121125_115139.jpghttp://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/The%20Path%20to%20Redemption/20121125_115301.jpg

Thus completing my trio of Deathwing officers.

http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/DeathwingHQ.jpg

But only in death does duty end, so I press the advance into December with a vow to paint Ezekial, Grand Master of Librarians, Keeper of the Book of Salvation and Holder of the Keys.

http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/The%20Path%20to%20Redemption/20121201_203838.jpg

I've owned this model since some time last century and that's as much progress as I've made. :o

PS. I haven't forgotten the Epic models. They're receiving some attention but are still basically just green.

Loving the old Terminators John

:D

There is something I like about a fair number of the older models ... dunno what it is though

Looking forward to seeing your next project completed ...

... ready for my Salamanders to 'hammerfist' when I am your way next

Looks over shoulder ...

... hope I don't get lynched by your fellow Dark Angel brethren

I'm glad you like the glimpses into my archive BI, and it's good to see you here Rob. ^_^

I am however in something of a quandry. I won't use Ezekial's original backpack and banner (seen above) because it's a plain thing from the 90s and all my sergeants have the same one. Instead I'll replace the backpack with one from the Dark Angel veterans set and put one of the fancy* plastic banners on it. I thought I'd picked one out but I'm worried now that, when compared with his stance and robes, it's flowing in the wrong direction. Take a look at the pictures and please tell me if you think it looks peculiar.

http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/The%20Path%20to%20Redemption/20121204_131207.jpghttp://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/The%20Path%20to%20Redemption/20121204_131135.jpghttp://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/The%20Path%20to%20Redemption/20121204_131102.jpg

Oh yeah, and it's a WIP update too. Aren't you lucky today? :(

*Any banner more advanced than cutting out a piece of paper is "fancy" in my eyes.

You just wanna be able to show off your free-hand work

:D

Can't wait to see it John ...

... May have to commission you to do some banners for my Salamanders hehe

To give feedback to your concern about the banner flowing in the wrong direction ...

... I think it looks okay (Although hard to say way in text form)

But he could be on his back swing ... so he would be spinning to his right/rear shoulder direction ...

... And so the banner would be flowing the way it is

So I see it that he is at the height of the back swing ready to deal the finishing blow in a duel ...

... against some warp-spawn daemon

Hope that makes sense cuz ... it does to me ... kinda

I need to get some of my models I got at Games Day painted ...

... and some Malifaux Goblins/Gremlins

I know exactly what you mean because I was thinking that too. I needed an independent opinion to be sure, so thanks cuz. :D

You like old minis eh Komodo? I have some Rogue Trader tactical marines and characters that I was thinking of painting to match my contemptor...

I'm waiting to see Cypher all painted up ...

... once it been stripped of my painting efforts as a 'noob

hehe

Think he should be next on your list after your Librarian

Finished. I omitted the yellow trim from the banner because it just doesn't look right on a Dark Angel. Have I said what an excellent model this is? It's a lot of fun to paint.

I don't what I'll paint for January and the LPC, but I suspect the words "Deathwing" and "Knight" might well feature.
