Let slide into Madness: the Warp Angels

Hi everyone,

It’s been quite a while since I posted anything hobby related so I’ve decided to share my latest creation. This warband will also serve as my Call of Chaos entry.

This warband was once known as the Praetorian Fists (my very first Marine army back in 2008) and has only recently been led on to the path of corruption by their chief librarian, Damien Helkos. They have just returned to Imperial Space from a harrowing and thoroughly enlightening journey through the warp and are currently plying the space lanes as corsairs near the Maelstrom as the Warp Angels. Perhaps they’ll even meet a certain L. Huron along the way? Who knows. Background details will evolve with the army as I progress.

Theme wise, this will be a space-born army with no vehicles, save the Helbrute, with lots of daemons, cultists (what is left of the ship’s crew), and a limited amount of actual chaos marines (as the attrition rate was quite high in the warp). They will be aligned to Chaos Undivided, leaning more toward Tzeentch and Slaanesh. I’ll try and add some short pieces of fiction along with my updates as well, depending how creative I’m feeling.

So without further ado, here is a test mini for my army. I’ve gone for an arcane look, with a mix of blue, purple, turquoise, magenta, blue-tinted metals and bronzes. I’ve used airbrush blending to convey the feel that their armour is continuously changing colour with whichever god is currently being asked for favour. Regular updates will follow soon:

Comments etc. are always welcome. Cheers!

The blue needs more depth for certain, check the right foot for proof; it's flat. There's not enough shading there. Try going over the recesses with a purple wash, then give the blue areas a blue wash. Some highlighting after that would make it pop out.

I love the bolter casing, very well done brass look. But considering the rather aged look I'd say the silver metallics are too bright (except the bolter drum); try giving these a watered down wash of black or dark brown (not a hevy or thick wash, otherwise you'll have to re-highlight)

Painting the base rim black will also help.

The chest piece is also excellent and I think it's the highlight of the model. The rest of the model struggles to keep up with that, and the bolter.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I've gone back and touched him up a bit.

Brother_Iron: cheers man. I rarely use such vibrant colours on my other projects as I am probably more inclined to more realistic, gritty look. But I felt like a change and the DV models are a perfect canvas to try out a bold, arcane look. I don't plan on adding any patterns to the rank and file guys at this stage. However, I do have plans for the upcoming sorceror and lord.

appiah5: thanks for the suggestions :) I used the purple wash in the recesses then a blue glaze and then a little bit of edge highlighting. I think that's all it needed to make it look much, much better. I've intentionally kept the metal on his armour bright as this is the look I'm going for, however I did go over it with a darker shade to increase the contrast. I appreciate the help.

Here's the finished model:

I should be finished with the next guy soon.

Cheers.

looking good, a few minor things id consider though is painting the back end of the bolter silver rather than brass, painting the ejection port black and the charging handle silver. and maybe a few parts of the scope either black or silver too just to break up the brass a bit more (imho it looks unfinished atm)

also bigger pictures :)

Way to improve a model on the fly with a little advice! That painting of the eye on his chest looks too cool for school. I would paint every gem, eye detail, round object that's on your models that way. The yellow breaks up all that blue so well you should start using green stuff to add 2-3 to everything or maybe just paint the globes of the backpacks. Or just keep doing what you're doing, he looks great.

that looks nice indeed! I have a small thingy, which is the bolter. it stands out too much to my taste which makes it look like it isnt part of the model. dunno how I would change that though. :) keep going, you're definitely on the right track!

The best thing to do as previously suggested by another poster is to paint the weapon mechanism and casing different colors; painting the casing copper and the mechanistm (the bit above the grip and trigger) gunmetal would probably work..

Cheers for the feedback everyone.

Lorenzon: I've gone back and redone the bolter mechanisms with silver. Looks much better :cuss

greenee22: Thanks! Rest assured, the bolter looks better now. The photo doesn't really do it justice (mainly because my only camera is my phone), but it looks far better in person.

smallvictory: Haha, well my plan is to do just that! Tzeentch loves eyes. I do too. And I like to think he's rewarding me for putting up with dodgy eyesight in his own super-excessive way...

Can't wait until I get to the Helbrute and the Screamers. So many eyes... My greenstuffing skills aren't that great but you'll see my attempt when I post some pics up of my sorceror. Thanks for the compliments!

Lepaca: Cheers! B)

I've got a fairly large update planned for this evening so stay tuned everyone.

Alrighty! Here's the update I promised ;) The photos aren't the best as the only camera I have is my phone. I'm getting a new one for xmas so hopefully the complete army shots will be much nicer.

So, first up, the update of my original Chosen test piece:

Hope you like them!

I'm also trying to figure out a warband symbol. I was playing around with the idea of a fist, that is slightly opened with an eye in the middle of the palm. Maybe with nails/claws. I'm thinking of making it quite similar to the Imperial Fists one they were the Praetorian Fists before they went renegade. I quite like the symbolism of the opening fist revealing an eye, as I like to think it represents the "opening of their minds" and freeing themselves from the physical and spiritual shackles of the Imperium. What does everyone think?

The first lot of fiction is on its way. I'm just adding the finishing touches and trying to make it sound less info-dumpy.

Loving the conversions, Dz'arkoth! The sorcerer and DP look very cool and unique. Please tell me you are leaving the helbrute's silly little pimple head off and keeping the gaping maw look :)
