Apologies as this is a double post from my Path to Redemption WIP thread, but I think it is worth putting it in the Hall of Honour too :)

The plan was to keep the models fairly true to this book cover

The first 5 are ALMOST done - just need some DA bling ^_^

I have gone for the 4th Company to match my 40K DA - and cause I can :o

And the weapons are staying red! I know that one of them has the modern DA icon but I was trying things out and forgot about it till it was too late.

At the moment I am not too happy with the power sword effect and will prob. be revisiting it at some point.

C&c always welcome :P

Thanks Brothers :P

Though I didn't notice til now that the novel cover actually has them wearing green armor.

I like to think of it as black and the cover is just mis-coloured as all the fluff I have seen says black armour (and I did say fairly true to the cover ;) )

Very nice! They perfectly capture the spirit of the Dark Angels HH Novels.

However I think you need to apply the weathering that you have used on their chapter symbol shoulder pauldron to the rest of their armour. It looks a bit odd having them in pristine armour apart from that one shoulder pauldron!

There are 5 more in MKIV armour in progress at the moment and when these are done I will be going back and weathering all of them as a group to keep it consistent - so stay tuned :)

I don't normally care for the first legion much, but these are looking fantastic. Love that winged helm on the sarge. The red weapon casings are a good call too, imo. Now get out there and put the boot in some Night Lords

I don't see Heresy-era members of the 1st Legion often! Love the work you've done on these guys. They're overflowing with character and detail.

Sidenote on the cover of the book: When you hold the book in your hands, it's easy to see that the armor is black, but there appears to be some kind of greenish light source on the Marines that is coming from outside the frame.

Awww how cute! They think they're Black Templars. ;)

Jokes aside, lovely painting you've managed there. Though I didn't notice til now that the novel cover actually has them wearing green armor.

It's a metallic black color, silvery-like. Gotta love those Order Knights.

  • 1 month later...

Now that you linked me back to this thread (forgot where i stole your pictures from aparently!) - they are gorgeous, and are a big reason as to why i chose pre heresy DA aswell.

A few questions if you dont mind ;

The grey/stone for the Angel bits, and the checkers- how was this achived?

Glory to the first.

Ok this could take a while and may be a little confusing as I don't have step by step photos, but here goes.....

The stone icons

undercoat in matt black

1st layer of codex grey

black ink

drybrush codex grey

drybrush fortress grey

drybrush skull white

For the drybrush stages I do not clean the brush between colours but just apply the new colour to the dirty brush. I find that this helps to blend in the colours a little better.

The 4th Company checkers are done this way

Just look at the top half of the circle....

Paint a white rectangle on the armour

using watered down black:

1. divide the rectangle in half both horizontally and vertically

2. divide the lh and rh boxes in half again

Paint alternate squares black

Tidy up the white

Add a codex grey rightangle to the top corner of each black box as a highlight

The background is rectangular rather than the semi-circle shown in the diagram and I have added a blood red line to seperate it from the black armour.

Hope this helps
