There are no Wolves on Fenris...

or so they say. Here is the beginnings of my archaic/ pre-Heresy/ Heresy era Space Wolves. I've dabbled around with several ways to do these over the years, usually involving trying to make the Warhammer Fantasy Chaos Warriors work, but I've never been truly satisfied with those results...

Enter Forge World.

Exit my spending money!

This force will comprise mostly of Mk. III Iron & Mk. IV Maximus armors with a few Mk.II & Mk. V bits for flavor. Pieces from various other plastic, resin, & metal kits will be used too, notably the Space Wolves box sets & the axes from the aforementioned Chaos Warriors. My space Vikings must have axes! These will count as close-combat weapons for in-game terms.

Enough of my rambling, now to the minis:

Love this guy! The hunt is on!

My Gothi (Rune Priest) based on the Servin Loth mini:

I Dremeled out the resin helm to use the plastic head. The staff is made from a Grey Knights staff & some wolf skulls.

Used the metal faced termi- head on this guy...plasma guns get hot you know!

His pose is a little wonky...will be fixing that soon.

Wolf Standard bearer #1 (four more to go...)

And last but not least, the beginnins of a Wolf Guard/ Lone Wolf in Cataphractii Terminator armor:

Once again I used my Dremel tool to remove the resin from inside the hood to accept a plastic head. I will be doing this to most of my resin Termies.

Please let me know what you think. I've really enjoyed this army so far, and I have a lot more resin & plastic to assemble!

Thank you for the kind words everyone. I've done a little after work tonight.

Here's a Wolf Guuard with Wolfclaws:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/07E49BAA-8A72-4977-9F1F-599035D5B7ED-3556-000001A69557D63F.jpg

Skull is from the plastic SW frames. Dremeled out the hood opening to take a bare head. Not sure which one I'm going to use just yet.

Added some fur to the Lone Wolf/ Wolf Guard:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/FBE5D6CA-71CC-4B00-A692-11D67718B966-3556-000001A6A06EFF62.jpg

I also started to scratch build him a storm shield. I know that technically Cataphrat's can't take storm shields, but I plan one using these dudes as Codex terminators. Even if I ever play a HH game, I can just say its decorative.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/F152EF9D-BB29-4D4C-A227-CB45C42968AA-3556-000001A96F142B95.jpg

I used my Olfa circle cutter (an awesome tool for the modeling desk) to make the disks. The icon came from the old SW plastic frame. The small strips lining each quarter are just thin Plastruct strip. The runes spell out Wolves & Fenris respectivle. Will probably scribe those in.

Let me know how it all looks!

Thank you for using your runes responsibly :) Nonsensical jumbles of runes is a very common feature on SW minis and it never fails to bug me.

You & me both. I think that even GW goes over board on some of their stuff. It's as if they think if one rune is good, fifty is better! (Like adding Scrappy to Scooby-Doo...)

So there's a translator for those runes somewhere?

These are some awesome wolves, and that fur you made looks awesome, how did you do it?

I can't wait to see more, how many do you plan to make?

I don't know how accurate the translation really is, but I found this website: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/ancient/write...e-in-runes.html

It's from the PBS/ NOVA program on Vikings it looks. It will be good enough for me.

As to the fur, it's just a blob of green stuff that I pushed and pulled at with a pair of needle nosed tweezers until I thought it looked like fur. Nothing more & nothing less.

My current build plan is around 40 Grey Hunters, 12-18 Longfangs, 10 Wolfguard or so, and needed characters. This is going to be my primary army for a very long time. I've always wanted a good looking Wolves force, so this will be it.

By the way War Angel, I love your USMC inspired force. My dad is retired Air Force, but I've always had an affinity with the Marine Corps...

Much, much more to come!

Here's the hand-hold for the storm shield:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/288B977E-217C-4E73-8DD6-D6976BB21F51-3556-000001CF7843196E.jpg

The grip is the power maul from the Cataphractii special weapons cut down, with scratch built brackets. Thebacknof the shield is the disc removed from the ring on the front. The brackets are just strip styrene, as are the power lines. The power cable at his feet is solder wrapped around plastic rod that will the power cable for the shield.

I hope y'all like where this is going!

Too tired to add the main text last night. Retail hell season is upon my work...

The mini was dry bribed with Fenris Grey, and edged with the same. The metallics are Citadel & Vallejo colors. The fur & bones were based in Khemri brown, then highlighted with Deneb Stone & Bleached Bone. A thinned wash of Nuln Oil was painted over the entire mini.

When I get off tonight, I'll post a picture how the sponge on chips & Tamiya weathering powders came out.

Let me know what you think!

I don't know how accurate the translation really is

It's legit. I'm not an expert on the elder futhark but I can read/write fluently using it. The only possible quibble is using uruz for "v" (which historically would more likely have been wunjo, as v and w were largely interchangeable in most palces that spoke old norse) but there are precedents for using uruz that way, and it makes perfect sense in the context of this inscription because it differentiates your "w" from your "v" and keeps everything simple.

Modern english words like "wolves" are hard to transliterate accurately on account of them using letters and phonetics in ways that didn't exist for the vikings (old norse for "wolves" is úlfar) but you don't need the inscriptions on your warhams to pass muster with a history professor, space wolves aren't historical vikings anyway, and it's hard to go too far wrong with straightforward alphabetic swaps like you're using here.

Anyway, stop reading my ramblings and go make some more of those wolf cataphracts. :)

Been working on Cataphractii number 3:

Here's the test mini done, save his backpack. I will do those enmass later. The base is cork, sand, some citadel texture paint, all sprayed black then dry brushed Khemri brown, bleached bone, then white.

The mini:

The face is something I wanted to try. It's just a few coats of Ogryn Flesh over a white base. Looks good for a table top mini.

Much more to come!

A few more models to show off:

A thunder hammer wielding Wolf Guard:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/5C427E48-CBAD-4A34-992E-A0A0F755BC4F-3891-000001DA519AAC3E.jpg

The start of his storm shield:

And the first missile launcher Long Fang. All Long Fangs will be in Mk.III armor.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/F073432A-3BAB-4DE6-8C45-53C265C6EDB3-3891-000001DA2F98761A.jpg

The Runes read 'Hate' & 'Wrath' on the hammer peen. The front of the peen has a rune, & so does the back.

I have 5 of the FW missile launchers for this squad. The shield boss is from the plastic box. My fifth Cataphract will be a combi-plasma & chainfist.

Thanks for looking & enjoying!
