Evicerator's LPC vow WIP thread (now with pics)

I, Evicerator, humble son of the most noble angel, Sanguinius, of the [blood Angels subforum], vow on the honour of my Chapter to paint and present at least 1 x 10 man assault squad on or before the 31st of March, 2013. I promise to provide at least two WIP updates, preferably with pictures, in that time. I vow that if I should fail, I will provide the Librarium with an article and wear the Signature of Shame until my penitence period is done.

This vow will serve as the initial post for a blog I hope to keep updated here on the B&C as I rebuild and repaint a BA army that I had started building 17 years ago and then sold off to buy an engagment ring a few years back. I just got my new Minitaire Paints in the mail today (new paint line for airbrushing from Badger that Lester Bursley and several other established Youtube painters have switched to.) and figured that this would be the best way to jump back into this huge and daunting process (as I type this I am staring down about 2000 points of minis sitting in shrinkwrapped boxes and a case with another 1500 points assembled awaiting paint.

The upside to all of this is that I have introduced my 9 and 10 year-olds into the hobby as well and they're pretty excited to get to painting themselves (they represent scummy xenos, sadly, so their painting progress won't be featured here lol)

Here's the kitchen table loaded up with the To-do stuff

The list contains:

25 Assault Marines

8 Vanguard veterans

10 Sternguard Veterans

5 Sanguinary Guard

5 Honour Guard

5 Death Company

3 Rhino Chasis (magnetized with everything to make Baal Preds and lolRazorbacks)

Here is my vow pics of the Assault Marine 10 man squad

*HOPEFULLY* cleaning them up tomorrow morning and airbrushing by the afternoon. Going to be using a Zenithal technique used by Lester from AwesomePaintJob.com:

Good luck Evicerator, the BAs need all the Brothers they can muster...

Good to see you're getting the young recruits into the hobby too! Look fwd for your work! smile.gif

Thanks! I needed this to motivate and encourage me to get my painting in gear. Been collecting and building the army for almost a year now and I'm amped to get this started and get my army back to the glory days it once used to be (with updated minis of course.)

I couldn't be more proud to have my boys taking up the hobby with me. It's something I've thought about for a while now and was never sure they'd want/like to. Both ask me often when I would be ready to paint and they both have sizeable Necron and Nid armies built and ready for paint.

Forgot to mention that they'll all have left side shoulder pads. I haven't glued on the ones I ordered from ebay (I spent a king's ransom buying over 100 of the same DC winged blood drop pads)

Finally got the time to sit down and slap some paint on a few marines. Was going to be my first time airbrushing - so to say I was nervous would have been an understatement. Plus I had no particular 'recipe' for my red other than a handful of other painters' suggestions.

Primed everything black and then Zenithal-sprayed a slightly lighter gray color on top of that. Tried to do white highlights, but my airbrush skills are very limited and it was a total mess. Just ended up Zenithal-spraying the white.

Next I tried the Ghost Tint Fresh Blood candy red over the white and ended up overspraying the mini by quite a bit... so that one is sitting to see how the details come out. The candy is unbelievably thin/syrup-y so the coverage takes a LOT of spray to see the pigment

Then mixed up some Vallejo Gory Red and Liquitex (airbrush medium - 4:10 drops ratio paint:liquitex) and sprayed another as a base coat. It took 3 layers of paint, but the mini covered very well with a somewhat deeper shade of red. The result looked got, but I wanted something a smidge deeper. So I went and sprayed a layer of the ghost tint candy on top of that and the resulting color was something I was very pleased with.

The shine is from the candy and as it dries it goes away. Planning on spraying it all with a matte varnish and then washing with a black wash.
