IA: Gryphon Guard

Okay, I've gone away and tried to make it a bit better. Any help would be great :P

The Gryphon Guard

 

Geneseed: Raven Guard

Homeplanet: Selm (destroyed)

Founding: 3rd

War Cry: Ne obliviscaris - Do not forget

Physiology: Mutated Sus-An membrane, missing mucranoid, missing Betcher's gland, missing melanchrome

Origins

 

After the success of the 2nd founding was confirmed (some 1000 years later) the High Lords of Terra decreed that a new founding was needed. Most geneseed was used as the flaws were still being discovered, save that of the Space Wolves, because of the Wolf Brothers whose extreme flaws were already showing. The Gryphon Guard drew its geneseed from that of the Raven. This geneseed was used more rarely later due to its flaws as were shown in the disbandment of the Screaming Eagles chapter of the same founding. The chapter was assigned a section of space to defend in the Segmentum Obscura near to the planet of Mordian. They were to choose a homeworld from any planets in the area.

 

The new chapter was given its equipment and embarked on their training given by their primogenitors. They proved to be quick, smart learners that quickly learned the RG's tactics. In this way the GG learned to strike from the shadows and hard and fast and then to vanish (a good tactic for a new, vulnerable chapter). After 4 decades of learning under the RG the chapter struck out on their own.

 

In their search for a homeworld they encountered a number of foes that their tactics could defeat without many casualties (mostly small squabbling Ork empires that thought the GG attacks were rival warlords attacking them) and their new chapter master (Commander Kratel) took this as a good sign and thought they would not be a wandering chapter for much longer. After ordering the Chief-Librarian to consult the Emperors tarot, he then ordered a crusade to relieve an Imperial Navy taskforce and 3 regiments of IG in an Eldar pirate stricken system.

 

Here they encountered a foe that was just as good as them from striking from nowhere. They lost a full company worth of SM to the DE's cunning strikes. It was on this campaign that the GG learned their now famed tactic of ambush and also learned of an advantage in that their mutated Sus-An membrane allowed them to wait for weeks for their foe to fall into their trap. They lay in wait for the DE raiders to attack carefully placed and selected bait. After countless ambushes were sprung the DE seemed to tire of being ambushed and withdrew to orbit. The GG followed them and once aboard their ships they prepared to pursue. However, the CM thought it seemed odd and asked the Navy taskforce to attack the DE cruisers from the other side of the system while the marine

Ahoy,

 

Looking good so far, I think. Aside from Ferrata's suggestions, I have a couple of my own...

 

The chapter was assigned a section of space to defend in the Segmentum Obscura but not close to the Cadian Gate
The Segmentum Obscuras is a big area of space. Whereabouts were they assigned to? Around the perimeter of the Eye of Terror? There's a map of the WH40k galaxy on pages 90-91 of the rulebook. Were they assigned to guard the perimeter of the Eye? Or the northern edges of Imperial space? Placing them in this area means there's a strong likelihood they'll have had contact with the Mordians, Cadians, Dark Angels or Space Wolves, as well as being near to Armageddon and the Gothic Sector, both major battlefields they would likely have been affected by if for no other reason then proximity. There's a lot of history in Obscuras, and having been around since the 3rd Founding, the Gryphon Guard would have been well-placed to have taken part in that history.

Who were these foes? Why were they so easily defeated? A Chapter's early battles and enemies can have a strong effect on their character and attitudes.

 

 

Beyond that, my major question is: what are the Chapter's major (and, preferably, early) defeats? Just as a man can be judged by the calibre of his enemies, so can an army be judged by its defeats and how they affect it. Besides, nobody likes someone who wins all the time. :P Defeats, emnities and vengence lend character. What would the Dark Angels be without Cypher and the Fallen?

Thanks Ferrata :blush: . Taking your tips into consideration, this is part of the revised history. (Note: homeworld is changed to somewhere closer, haven't decided where yet)
