I think most chapters study enemy tactics, it was mentioned in the dali rituals of marines in 3rd edition codex. (There was even mention of battle languages) -

How they separete veteran sergeants ? One assums that sarges would have red helm, with yellow stripe, but how about veteran sergeants ? EDIT: As constructive suggestion, what if veteran sergeants have white skull on chest armour ? Or prehaps inverted pauladrons a la Blood Angels ? -

I was more trying to imply general location, meaning between macharia and the Eye."Near" could mean several hundred lightyears. That place is kind of frontier isn't it ? And frontiers chronically lack important space lines. After all, only nids have come from outside of the galaxy. I'm staring this so if there is more 'modern' map in the net I'd like to know. :P So how about somewhere in middle of Tempestus ? It seem boring place that no-one is intrested of. And it should be 'civilized' enough to have important space lines. Having said that, I have nothing against southern pacificus, I just think it need bit 'fluffing out' Meaning to say, why the world was garrisoned (ok, it came to sit upon important route). So why the route became important ? I'd like to keep pilgrims out of this, so it would likely be some sort of supply route. Some general supply route that brings resources from peripheria to heart of the imperium to be refined war-engines and such. This would mean that route became important AFTER some rich mining colony was founded, or something like that. While this is not vital information for fluffing the chapter, I think that such convoys would lure in pirates of several races, and so our chapter would have something to do in near space too. What would poor finn like me know of Greek :P -

Western fringes are good. But I think that not too close of Eye would be good either. :P And they need to be 'with-in' the imperium to be in important line. Hydraphur: (Segmentum Pacificus) Segmentum Pacificus Imperial Naval Base is close there, so somewhere "near" it ? EDIT: typoes. -

I think that any marne can judge wether man can fight. But I assumed it would take a chaplain to see wether one has a heart of a warrior. http://www.darkmillennia.net/QuadrantMap_pages/GMap.htm How about segmentum pacificus ? Do we need to be more specific ? Prehaps the world came important after macharian crusade, as a ONE route to macharian worlds ? (Of many routes) I know tying fluff to GW fluff ight be catastrophical, but that being one of many should guaranteed that unless GW wipes macharius, we'd be safe. Or then we can just say that the forge world was founded in 'somewhere quite far away' and now the system WB inhabit is inportant supply route for imperium ? Full of merchant ships, plaqued by human ork and eldar pirates? -

True, but he decides when something is 'settled'. Entirely possbile. Prehaps the world was not that important when the chapter was founded. But it leads to a following question. As the systems/worlds importance increased, were the chaptermaster of WB responsible for increasing the amount of regiments ? (As he is acting planetary governor) I assume yes... this shows that WB have more trust to their fellow men, than other chapters do. Prehaps he later chapter master allowed regiments to be sent to serve the imperial generals around the galaxy. (Ideally producing actually experienced units.) For some reason I have bad feeling of having chapter sitting on huge amount of regiments. But as noted UM do it too, so. I think idea noted by AWOL is satisfactory explanation. I gather here something we have 'agreed'. Someone note of he/she disagrees. Also, some ideas. -WB homeworld is current garrison world. (It was not when the chapter was founded) -As the planets sits on space route that later came vital, the chapter decided to increase amount of PDFs -And put up the 'war games system' (before that they recruited from games held in academy prehaps ?) -New war games system allow them to observe potential recruits in combat. A chaplain walking in shadows, judging whether youth is suitable in body, mind and heart to join the chapter. -So two worlds, one is for 'games' other is the homeworld. -Fortress monastery is in space ? Orbital station or space fortress ? -

They could, and would probably. That's not the problem. The question is WOULD high lords of terra trust that chapter would allow tithing from their precious homeworld. Ultramarines allow it. It goes like this. (bit parody, ok) WB commander: We want that world High Lords: But they produce regiments, and we need them. WB commander: We promise to keep sending them to you ? High Lords: Honest ? WB commander: Lets make a pinky promise ! High Lords: -.- It is not that high lords would lose the regiments, but they would POTENTIALLY loose them. And thus deny choosing garrison world as home world. I have suggested something that works around this and still keeps ties to the guard. See my earlier post. But in the end, this thing is in the guiding hands of Molotov. -

I have suggestion to the homeworld thing which solves the grounding guard thing. The system has several habitable plantes (and several gas giants as meteor buffer and to produce hydrogen for fuel) One of the worlds is 'war-game world', one of em is the garrison world, and third is less hospitable WB home world. Now, marines recruit from the garrison world via picking recruits in war-games. This way marines get they young well trained aspirants and cream of entire martial society. AND as they don't govern over the garrison world, they have no authority over its tithes (and thus regiments) -

Zhivago replied to Commissar Molotov's topic in + THE LIBER +
That's not the point. The point is that marine home-worlds are free from tithes. No tithes, no regiments. We can assume that marines WOULD allow it. But High Lords could not be sure of it, and thus see it as a potential risk of hampering imperial forces in that part of galaxy. They'd be afraid they'd have huge amount of prime quality regiments, that they cannot ship for their needs. There'd be still chances of 'elimination' at barracks (sleeping quorters) OR in the war games. And as implants are NOT implanted smae time, but on a span of years, a fresh initiate would not much differ from thoose not chosen. EDIT: grammar. I'm not as per against the idea of garrison world as home world, I'm just pointing out things that might be considered in the fluff. Same goes for co-training with guard. -

@Molotov, I wonder if you missunderstood what I meant (or that I failed to explain it) I mean that when there are no marines, imperium is free to draft regiments to service from there. Regularly. But AFTER marines get in, the regiments can't be shipped out without marine agreement, due the 'no tithes' thing. This is what I think might annoy the IG represantive at High Lords Table. Point I think. Just normal man held system. With few worlds and moons orbiting them. Add to that 'and politically'. Prehaps each state has numerous minor houses whom compete on political level to get the position of 'noble house'. Such changes would be rare, but possible. Men are bound to scheme against ulterior power, this gives people something to do and adds realism. Not all people are willing subjects. The E helps those whom help themselves. :( Might lead to a situation where younger (under 14) and not chosen might plot 'accidents' (like in thoose for freshly chosen marine candidates. To get place in the sun forthemselves. This of course would end system that creates cunning and sly initiates. Nothing that can't be fixed with psychotherapy, but... The point about marines with power mauls is valid in normal situations, in bright daylight. -

Would imperium allow it ? Marines to 'hi-jack' garrison world. As guard would lose a lots of tithed regiments. At least potentially. Marines might allow tithing regiments, BUT then it would be up to marines. yup. PDF is in command of governor, and tithed regimets at the hands of warmaster that is chosen by imperial policy. Having marines to tell guard where to go would disturb imperial practises. Having marines to go after tithed regiments they have sent away would feel bit odd too. There would'nt be these problems with your 'normal' marine homeworld. Then the marines could be 'commonly' working with guard, but there wouldn't be such 'bonding' effect. Some sort of 'greater good' dogma? I mean, men are envious lot by nature. Look at most cultures on earth... I mean, kids on earth make rucus if they are not chosen to baseball team. What would young boys of olde and noble families do when their (possible) dreams were crushed ? This idea is nice. Though it pretty much would need the garrison world to provide enough men. ;) If the planet stands on a door to important space line, no foe X in needed, rather we have subset of foes {f1,f2,f3...,fn} -

Remember Soldiers, not Heroes. Farmers becoming warriors and fighting with courage is back on the hero side of the fence. Add to that, that story seems to be quite common among the DIYs here. It has followig problem. Y has actually no authority over founding, nor can he make suggestions. One would still assume that at least one company remained there, as a honor guard. Plus there'd be fortress monastry there. Prehpas the fortress monastery is in the orbit ? Or on the moon ? They are often in inhospitable places to faciliate training. Surface of garrison world doesn't sound much like one. (Ok, Macragge (sp) ain't literal hell either, but at least the land is harsh.) Fortress monastry with all the guns would make nice orbital defense platform. :D EDIT: my quotes :( -

Quite impossible. The organs need to be implanted at certain age. ie 10-12 year old. And I assume mental doctronication begins about same time. So it wouldn't be that viable. In addition they would be likly to cause commodition in the academy. "Oh so you got chose to be marine, take this!" -> fight -> reduced comradeship and potential losses of non-marine traineees. So the school might have sort of 'war games'. Harsh, but ideally non-lethal. Of theese games WB would choose their new recruits. Probably chaplain wathing over exercise. It would be tremendous honour for the family to have one of their sons accepted to marines, even if he were thus forever lost. Well, if you have fortress world, you get huge amount of regiments. And you need something valuable to defened. Immediate question would be, was the chapter founded to strengthen defenses ? And why they are allowed to sail away to do their work ? Theese were supposed to be guys carrying the war on imprium. And that won't be easy of they sit on some planet waiting for something to happen. The point on having no war on surface is viable though. Bit like ultramar, but why not. Planet that is proud of it's military history. Prehaps they even send regiments to serve in imperial guard. It is this 'cadia' thing that I don't like, see reasoning above. EDIT: My sentences should be understandable now. -

I don't think that they are THAT well equiped. They jusy happen to have codex adherent toold for every job. If they have varied equipment, it is due the fact that they want to be ready for all, not because they have galatic uncles. On reason to explain the special(ized) whirlwind is that prehaps the forge world that supplies WB is manufacturing them in great numbers (i.e. manufacturing them to entire subsector) Not too young, not too old, along the lines of 14-18 I think the slavic idea was good, so now it is up to board members of said cultural region to pour ideas. Slavic names have ben discussed. Prehpas their homeworld is NOT hive, nor death world. prehaps soemthing as 'developing world' or having technology of roughly 15th century. Prehaps the land is divided to 'clans' who herd, mine and farm their lands. Make inter-war common, meaning that young boys must prove their manlynes in war. -> Potential for recruits. Said clans thn use resources for living. I don't like idea of super fauna or wild tribes around these 'clans'... and 'clan' is just working name. People and the emperor. Emperor helps a man who helps himself. Such attitude would do no harm among the clansmen. There is ought to be imperial cult of somekind on the world, prehaps quite pragmatic. Each batch of new recruits is small ? So they combine them to one squad. (Clan rivals ending in same squad)So that they must work out their diffirences or die/fail. After they have been deemed worthy of joining, they are delegated to positions suiting to them. As noted in earlier post by Grimdarkness, I don't think that High Lords or Inquisition (other than hereticus) having too much problems with chapter being not so 'holy knight' The ecclesiarchy might not like it very much though and this leads to qustion, whether the chapter has access to rosarius and thus chaplains ? I'd say that they have chaplains and rosaries. They might not be on best of terms with big E, but then again, most chapters are not. WB are doing His work among stars, and while their methods might not be pleasant, they are not TOO heretic to cause stirr. Hereticus though probably checks the chapter bit more often that other chapters, but no side makes fuss of this ?
