Do Space Marines Retire?
biglou666 replied to DogWelder's topic in + ADEPTUS ASTARTES / LOYALIST LEGIONES ASTARTES +
"Only in death does duty end!" Love that quote, but I suppose occasionally an old or seriously wounded marine would serve better as a dedicated artificer or tactician. -

Just checked my index, and they definitely are, it's there in their options. Hitting with 7 shots on average is awesome from one model, especially with a D2 weapon. -

If you take a blood angels elite detachment you could have a librarian dreadnought as your HQ! Just throwing that out there, Im sure most opponents wouldnt mind if you didnt try to use any buffs from this detachment on others and vice-versa. Also, venerable dreadnoughts with a rifleman loadout seem very powerful (2x TL autocannons). Just bought 3 left and right autocannon arms from forgeworld, pretty hyped for having 3 riflemen on the back line to soften up targets for my Ironclads up front! (or punish eney transports / elites for getting too close) Ive already posted this list on a similar thread in the BA forum and its still very much a work in progress (1500 pts-ish): 2x primaris redemptors, both with gatling cannons and storm bolters. (might switch to one or two macro plasmas after playtesting more) 3x venerable dreadnoughts, rifleman loadout (two twin autocannons) 3x Ironclad dreadnoughts with chainfists (meltagun) and hurricane bolters. 1x chaplain dreadnought, Twin lascannon or inferno cannon. It seems like it could deal with both horde and vehicle lists quite well, the only drawback being a lack of troops so capturing objectives in some games will be impossible. I might switch out a redemptor for a Razorback with assault or dev squad to have at least somthing on the field that can capture objectives, and make target priority a little more complex for opponents. -
Thinking of doing an all dreadnought army - is this madness?
biglou666 replied to Andy Tea's topic in + BLOOD ANGELS +
I wouldnt worry about that for the rifleman, no-one is going to insist you buy another book for the sake of just a single weapon entry, just write the points and stats on a post-it and stick it in your book. xD As for the chappy dread, he's pretty good, 11 Power, 2+ BS&WS, an extra wound compared to other dreads, 5+ invun and a 6+ FNP. Also a +1 Str bubble for friendlies in 6'. Comes with two CCW as standard and has all the weapon options of other dreads (except ML) aswell as the option to take an inferno cannon. Personally i would give him a lascannon, as he doesnt really need two CCW, and my list mentioned above doesnt have much ranged anti armour weaponry. -

I too am wanting to make an all dreadnought army. So far, for a 1500 point lists, (vanilla codex at the moment) this is an outline of what i would want to take: 2x primaris redemptors, both with gatling cannons and storm bolters. 3x venerable dreadnoughts, rifleman loadout (two twin autocannons) 3x Ironclad dreadnoughts with chainfists (meltagun) and hurricane bolters. 1x chaplain dreadnought Its basically a very shooty dreadnought lists, that can comfortably throw out enough shots per turn to cut back hordes, but everything except the riflemen dreads can move forward and charge into vehicle heavy armies. I can imagine it being alot of fun, but i would also be tempted to take some troops somewhere, even if they were just a few smaller assault or dev squads in razorbacks to capture objectives. My recomendation to you would be to have a few rifleman dreads in your lists, 8 str 7 ap -1 shots per turn at that kind of range is actually insane for the points, especially with a vendread hitting on twos. Ironclads are also great as most basic infantry weapons (and CC strength) usually tops out at 4, so their extra toughness of 8 means they are being wounded on 6s by most enemies. (on a side note, with so few units on the battlefield, your turns will be smooth and fairly quick, making life easier for you and your opponent. -
Non-primaris marines
biglou666 replied to aluriel00's topic in + ADEPTUS ASTARTES / LOYALIST LEGIONES ASTARTES +
When I first heard this question raised (when primaris were first shown) I thought that they might be trying to do a total overhaul. But now we've see the codex, it's actually changed my perspective. All the new primaris models seem to have to choose between bolter and plasma weapons. Captains have no options. Theres only one transport that can hold primaris marines. Wheres the variety? I think that in the long run, games workshop wants us all to have primaris somewhere in our armies, and in moderation they will be great. Conversely, an all primaris force just wont have enough bodies on the field to be efficient. We need to add the variety somewhere, and our older units are a total must for that versatility. At the end of the day, we all still want meltaguns, sterguards, vanguard, landraiders, cheaper dreadnoughts, razorbacks etc in our lists, and if GW wanted us to ditch our old marines, they would have made these all readily avaible to primaris in this codex. TL;DR: Primaris are the shiny new big sword, and the old marines are the reliable swiss army knife. Any soldier worth his salt would take both to battle if he could, and GW knows that too. Or at least, thats how I feel about it. I hope I'm right. -

I also agree with the sentiment that GW shouldn't try to santion spammy lists, as they should only regularly appear in highly competetive environments anyway. Which is fair enough, because at some point, there has to be a best unit somewhere in the book, and competetive people will want to win competitions. That's that. Another thing to remember is that almost any game system will go through waves of meta changes, so the best unit is only the best unit for as long as it isn't being countered. If it gets to a few more months down the line, and competetive lists are still exactly the same, then mabye we should start asking questions. But 8th is still young right now. Give it some time first. And if someone at your local store keeps bringing the same list, it should be quite easy to punish that kind of mistake :P -

Making jump assault marines viable?

Hm, Id still rather give the sergeant the thunder hammer if you're going down that route, 2 points less, for 1 less AP, but 3 damage guraunteed instead of D3. And you can still take a plasma pistol.

Since I've started my own homebrew Blood Angels successor chapter, I thought I'd start to keep a log of progress, army lists, and lore all in one place. I've painted my first few squads and tanks and Would like some feedback on the colourscheme in paticular. I'll start to add more about the lore and background of the chapter as I complete more models. I'll probably write my lists as if they are blood angels, and come up with alternative names and lore for the blood angels characters so I can still use their rules. Main colours: Weathered Bronze, Very dark pink, Silver. Here are some Veterans with power weapons, Accompanied by a las/plas Razorback. http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4258/35816346896_cfd517bd09_b.jpg http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4217/35725097081_bc4d015d85_b.jpg Completed: N/A Mostly done (tabletop standard): Veterans x 5 Razorback Basecoated: 15x Sniper scouts Corbulo (havent thought of equivalent name and lore yet) 5x assault marines (with plasma loadout) 1x razorback 10 sternguard veterans Any Feedback on the painting, or suggestions for lore would be greatly appreciated, though i know i've still got some more detail work to do, and the bases need doing. I'm very happy with the name, and quite like the colour scheme but would be intrigued to see what others thought - Biglou

Even as a BA player, 8th edition has buffed transports (read, razorbacks) so much i think even my larger lists are going to see a maximum of 10 jump packs from now on. Just put all of your important objective grabbing units in assault cannon razorbacks. If its more of a line holding unit, shove them in lazerbacks, (or las/plas backs). If you want to play more aggressively with assault sqauds with jump packs, I'd give them flamers and the sergeant a hand flamer. They do a great job of detering and punishing charges. You can also deepstrike them into cover to reduce the effectiveness of enemy shooting and charging, then move / charge the next turn.

If you are running a priest on foot (no jump pack) then i really like corbulo for just 5 meltabombs more than the basic priest. Had a great game yesterday with 5 powerweapon vets and his self re-roll ability is awesome for making sure he can get people back up and stay in the fight. Sadly though, he can't take a jump pack. For a JP priest, I would want to keep it cheap and cheerful, but a powersword and plasma pistol combo isn't too pricey in 8th. (As a side note, im tempted to get a sanguinary priest with combi plasma and keep them with a 5-man plasma gun assault squad, so i can hang back and target elite units with them. Then the priest can pick up marines when their plasmaguns explode.)

Yeah, i would definitely second that it can take out two models. Basically the scout gets a sweet collateral kill for their youtube montage :P

Awesome, time to spam 6 man double plasma assault squads in las-plas razorbacks! (Plasma is life)

I would say that sniper scouts seem better than tac marines at the moment. They are still a troops choice so you can grab those bonus command points from your lists if you're building that way, and snipers are just straight up good against most targets, especially against aura providing characters with those mortal wounds. Taking 3 5 man sniper squad comes in at around the same price as 15 kitted out marines too. They do have to stay in cover more than tacs do, but our assault squads / DC / dreads do a better job in our lists as a frontline anyway.

Post-release roundtable: what worked? what didn't?
biglou666 replied to submarinesoup's topic in + BLOOD ANGELS +
So i had a 50 power game the other day. Took seth with 5 DC (in a las plas razorback), a baal predator, 5 man tac squad, 5 sniper scouts, a lasccanon dread, and 2x MM 2x ML Dev squad. Was playing agaisnt dark eldar (they seem pretty good right now!). The sniper scouts are worth their weight in gold. Heavily considering running 15-20 camo sniper scouts in my future lists as they are destructive and versatile. Whether they were shooting at characters, vehicles, or troops, they just always felt like they were relevant, each for the cost of less than a DC marine each without upgrades. Just make sure to put them on the tallest piece of terrain on your side, as they eventually got charged by a homonculus. Las plas razorback is my new favourite transport (really kept the pressure on the DE raiders and other skimmers), baal predator with assault cannon was acceptable againt DE troops. The DC were rather lacking, even with a few thunder hammers, it was only having seth with them that made them ok. Still going to need to play some more games to really get a feel but i think a scout heavy army with LS storms, And vets in Las-Plas razorbacks could be the way to go for a more mobile army list. As far as primaris marines are concerned, i dont have any yet and probably wont any time soon as they get average reviews at best.
