Home made dry/texture palate questions
-
Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone had try making a dry brush palate at home, the kind that Artis Opus uses for his drybrushing. I've found cheap alternatives for both the brushes and the brush dampener but I've not had much success with making a texture palate. I bought a cheapo wooden palate and carved some groves/shapes into it to texture it but my big problem is that paint dries on it super fast so I don't have the amount of working time Artis Opus does in his videos. My two ideas for solving it is either basecoating the entire thing black and hoping thats enough to separate the paint from the porous wood, or to give it a matte varnish for the same reason. My question is which of those seems more likely to work. I'm worried the matte varnish might create Too much of a seal and then I won't be able to use the texture in the palate to test the drybrushing. Help and comments appreciated!

Thanks! All I did was put some black contrast at the top, some purple contrast in the middle and a watered down skin tone at the bottom and then used the mini as the palatte, blending the transition points while the paints were still wet. The highlight was a mix of pink and flesh tone to try keep it all sort of tied together. I find Contrast paints blend really well, I didn't use medium this time but next time I definitely will to give even more working time and a more subtle blend. -

Just a small Legionairy kill team, and some demon minis. A friend got a 2nd copy of the Chaos issue of Imperium and kindly donated the minis to me so I converted some specialists from those. I've always wanted an OG Demon Prince mini, its easily one of the nicest ones theyve ever made, but Im not sure I did it justice. I tried a dark red contrast paint over a bright silver for the armour but it looks fuzzier than I'd like, instead of metallic.

A few Admech allied marines, I started the concept for Kill Team 1.0 so there are lots of weapon options, terminators and some kit bashed heavy intercessors! Dont look too closely at the robe sculpting, its not good >.>
