  1. Hey all! I recently made an international move and had to leave all of my armies back in the U.S. I've been getting the itch to play again, and a buddy of mine here is just now getting into the hobby, so we both decided to try out Kill Team as a way to get into/ back into the hobby. I want to run the Legionnaires Kill Team, and I had a few questions on what kind of team to run. (I'm aware they're phased out and not allowed for tournament play, but its just gonna be at home games for us, so no worries there!) First, out of the two "HQ" options, which seems to perform better between the Aspiring Champion and the Chosen? I have zero experience with play, so I'm not sure how impactful adding 1 to APL is vs preventing fall back actions/self healing. I'm leaning towards the Chosen just because the combination of the self healing and a Nurgle mark sounds like it'll make him a pain to remove. Second, I love kitbashing and sculpting, so I'll be using the Possessed kit as a base for my team. A lot of small options aren't native to the kit that the Kill Team has access to (grenades, pistols, etc), so in regards to that, how important is WYSIWYG? In casual games at your FLGS, would you care of these options aren't on the model? I think big things like heavy weapons and the like should be obvious to anyone looking at the team, but as an example, would something like the massive fist/claw on the Greater Possessed fly as the 2 handed chainaxe for the Butcher? Last, how does my team selection thus far look? As I only have one box of Possessed and the Greater Possessed model, I'm stuck building the maximum of 6 operatives without any wiggle room for swapping for the time being. I wanted to build something that leans melee but is still an all comers team that can handle both elite teams and more horde style ones. Chosen - Mark of Nurgle: Seems tanky and hard to move. Butcher - Mark of Undivided: I like the idea of a big hard hitting dude. I thought the rerolls from Undivided here would be handy with him hitting on 4+. Icon Bearer - Mark of Undivided: Undivided seems like the best mark to take for standard bolter wielders. Legionary Balefire Acolyte - Mark of Tzneetch or Mark of Undivided... kind of unsure which would synergize with his abilities better. Legionary Heavy Gunner- Mark of Tzneetch - Not really sure where to go here between Heavy Bolter and Reaper Chaincannon. Which is the better all comers choice? My last slot is still undecided. Not sure if I want to go with a Khorne Anointed or Tzneetch Gunner with plasma. Thoughts there? Also on the Butcher, how does he compare to the Shrivetalon? Out of all the operatives he would be the one I'd most readily want to swap for something else. Even with the rerolls, that 4+ isn't the best. The Shrivetalon looks like he would be fun as Undivided or Slaanesh. Thanks for any help!
  2. I know I'm late, and this has been mentioned already, but Chaos Bikers. IMO, bikers have always been one of the coolest units in the Space Marine arsenal, loyalist or heretic. What's cooler than a genetically perfected superhuman? A genetically perfected superhuman on a motorcycle Add in a bad guy persona and it gets even better. I can deal with the out of date, copy/paste loyalist tank kits with an extra sprue thrown in, but Chaos Bikers stick out like a sore thumb. Give me new bikes! And a Doomrider refresh!
  3. So, I recently downloaded Speed Freeks on Steam, and I gotta say this game is an absolute gem. For 20 USD it is packed with so much stuff, but the player count is abysmally low. Not sure if it's due to only being on PC, maybe too niche, or lack of advertising prior to release, but this game should have way more players than it currently does. For anyone who hasn't played it, it's like if Twisted Metal and Rocket league had a baby, and then that baby got slung into the 41st millennium and painted green. There are loads of vehicles to choose from, three built in progression paths for cosmetics, a custom map builder, and the controls feel easy to learn but hard to master. Matches are short too, so it doesn't require a huge amount of time investment. For such a low price tag it gives you a lot of content, and frankly I think the devs have done a great job keeping a lot of the crap that plagues modern games out of it. No paywalls or loot boxes to be seen. It's honestly kind of sad that it seems like nobody is playing it when it's such a goofy good time. Is anyone kroozin around on there, or is this one doomed to collect dust in the Steam library?
  4. Been lurking here since 2004 and I still haven't finished an army
  5. I'm loving the combination of the two different styles of highlighting. I feel like you need to do a bit more to balance out the airbrush highlights, though. It's not a dig on your painting ability at all, so please don't take it that way. Your 'Eavy Metal style edge highlights are clean and your airbrush strokes are super controlled. The issue when I look at the models is they are so drastically different from each other stylistically they are clashing. If I could make a suggestion, take a rank and file marine and paint in the eye lenses with white and an ink to match the red. It should make the eyes pop but still blend with the sprayed red around them. It'll break up the spray and make it look more like a glow. White on the plasma coils washed with ink would pop too. Try it and see if you like it. If not, you're just out an overcoat and I'll shush!
  6. A nasty little combo is to run one as Night Lords and give him the Night Haunter's Curse WLT. You're automatically pumping out two mortal wounds per turn minimum. Add in Ulocca and you've got 3 per turn minimum IIRC? I think the auto mws proc Ulocca, but it's been a minute since I looked at the exact verbage on that daemon weapon. If I'm wrong, the laws of averages say you're gonna roll at least one 6 and pick up another two mortal wounds anyway. Or you can go warps malice for shooting phase MWs and then mark him Khorne for the 2+ wounds on t4, or Slaanesh to guarantee another round of combat if he survives the first.
  7. You'd be better off glazing over washing. A wash will be too thin. It'll just flow into the recesses, and where it doesn't flow it'll just make splotches. I'd look up a YouTube video on glazing vs washing and then go from there. The blue looks great though!
  8. I'm going to say I'm interested to see what a Cogs army can do, in particular because of the Forge Surge stratagem. For one CP I now get max shots on a defiler, for both the cannon and the flamer? Ectoplasma cannons on a forge fiend are also now max shots? I'm not saying the stratagem is game breaking or anything, but it seems like a relatively cheap fix for a lot of units that may be worth a second look if you've got the points to spend on them. As far as the big man himself, I think he might be slightly overcosted, but not by much. Yeah it sucks that he's targetable to shooting, but he's got a 2+/4+ and a built in -1 to the damage he takes. Moving 12" on turn 1 with fly means that very poorly named hammer could get into some early combat too. I wouldn't sleep on him. Oh, and another big note is his ability that halves ranged weaponry. It is important to note that it states "units." That means anything. All the melta you usually worry about blowing up your tanks and daemon engines? Gonna have to get a lot closer to get that tasty melta range. I think you're mostly gonna see people playing cogs with cultist blobs, warpsmiths, fiends, defilers, etc. I think it'll hold its own if you lean into it, won't be super competitive, but will be awesome to play and play against. It gives chaos players a reason to play monster mash lists
  9. So, with the Arks of Omen Detachments being a thing now it no longer costs 3 cp to bring in a knight for a healthy bowl of Chaos soup. It got me thinking about that age old question of "how do I hit that sweet -4 LD debuff." While we unfortunately still can't get the house Korvax ability in an Auxilary Superheavy Detachment (sans Be'lakor shenanigans), what you can get is a Knight Abominant. Each psychic phase you get a point and click 18" -1LD debuff on a 5+. And of course, all of the other benefits of having a Knight Abominant to throw up the field. Well, now that Knights don't cost any CP to take has anyone thought of souping one in? I personally refuse to play daemons, but that is purely because I refuse to paint them
  10. I can't decide  So: 1. Decimus. As far as introducing a new character to the current setting, Decimus would be perfect. Another named non-primarch Psyker besides Ahriman and Typhus would be awesome for Chaos. Plus, his wargear is super thematic. 2. Sevatar. He was never *technically* confirmed killed. GW does like their loopholes to bring characters back  If the lore for his return were handled by the correct pair of hands, I'd love to see him make a comeback.
  11. Because one of the best things about the Night Lords is they don't worship chaos. Of course there might be a few warbands here and there that do, but as a whole they're against it. I like that about them, and if I did a Night Lords army I wouldn't want them to be chaos worshippers of any kind. Maybe I'll just ask the wife what to do. She's good at making decisions for me
  12. And there's the conundrum!l I had a pretty impressive chaos army at one point. About 2k points of Emperors Children and 1500 of Night Lords. I definitely plan on restarting my army, but between NLs and SoM, I can't decide which one to go with. NLs have been my favorite Legion since I was a kid first starting 40k. Everything about them (IMO) is so unique compared to all the other Chaos Legions. Plus, they're the only Legion that still kind of clings on to that early GW 80s/90s feel. Let's face it, the lightning and the bat wings are super metal  But the SoM are such a unique force. They've got just enough lore to give you a foundation, but the creative freedom they afford is so vast on top of a dope color scheme. Malice/Malal as a concept is super cool. And if you pay attention, there are loads of hidden references to Malal in the lore. Be'lakor for example. Read it backwards and drop the or, you get Kaleb...
  13. Appreciate it! Definitely a tale of triumph  Originally I had envisioned him as a Night Lord, but the more I put into him the more he started looking like a blood crazed butcher over a fear inducing psychopath. Always had a soft spot for the Sons of Malice. They're a pretty bloodthirsty chapter, they've got canonical beef with the Sisters, and you never see them either, so I figured I'd throw them in the pool for a vote. One for Night Lords on the board! Either way, I definitely think I'll be taking your suggestion of going in a slavic direction with his name.
  14. One of my absolute favorite sculpts to come out in the last few years is the Master of Executions. Don't know why I like him so much when we've had a whole bunch of cool kits like Abbadon, Ghaz, Be'lakor, and so on come out, but I finally put enough of a dent in my hobby backlog that the missus said I could start restocking the pile of shame  The very first model I decided to get was the MoE. Before I present his pre paint photo, I have to say that hands down, this has been the most infuriating conversion I have ever done. Let me regale you with an incredibly frustrating tale. I don't blame you if you want to skip it, so if listening to a fellow hobbyist's agony isn't your cup of tea, just scroll til you see a photo below. I bought my MoE a little over a month ago. I knew when I got him I wanted to convert him. I started brainstorming ideas to make him a little more thematic, and I realized something you rarely ever see with Chaos armies (or any other "evil" army) are dead Sisters of Battle. Trophies, corpses, female body parts... They are a huge rarity for purchase, but my mind was made up. I knew I'd be hunting some obscure corners of the internet for parts, but fortunately a lot of you guys came through with a lot of good suggestions, so cheers for that ^_^ After waiting over a month, all the parts I ordered finally came in on Monday and I got to kitbashing. The conversion I wanted to do was simple on paper, but turned out to be a nightmare in execution. I wanted to add a back banner littered in body parts, replace the two heads he was holding with Sisters heads, and find a better head for the MoE himself. One of you fine folk suggested the Sack O' Corpses by Secret Weapon minis for a carved up female torso which was perfect! I made a back banner out of two pieces of thin plastic rod and glued the torso to it. I then got the idea to wrap the torso in jewelers chain and hang othe body parts from it. This was the first visit from the good idea fairy that turned out to be an absolute pain. One, plastic rod is way flimsier than I thought it would be. Two, the rod I used was too small to drill a hole in with a pin vise. I notched the top rod and attempted to glue it together. Every time I tried to wrap chain around it, the super glue instantly gave out and the banner snapped. "No problem," I said to myself. I decided to use plastic weld instead. Busted the bottle out, get up to grab a drink, come back to find the bottle spilled over onto my carpet and my cat laughing maniacally at me (in my head at least, but whatever). Drive to two different hobby stores to replace the bottle, out of stock at both. Yay. I get home after driving for an hour plus, sit down, shove the thoughts of murdering my cat back into the deep down place where my feelings go, and after hours of painstakingly regluing this banner together, peeling jewelers chain off of my fingers, and losing these stupid little plastic arms, hands, and skulls, I get the back banner finished. Huzzah! Head swap on the man himself is easy enough. Trim a little of the neck off, jobs a good'un. Now comes the head swaps in his hand. I clipped away the plastic heads and replace them with two resin heads from wargames exclusive. I had to trim down the top of their heads and file the existing hair down to make room for sculpted greenstuff hair. I've never sculpted greenstuff hair. Can't be that hard, right? Wrong. At least if you're not familiar with greenstuff sculpting stuff from scratch. Total time investment for two heads? At least three hours. Finally this thing was ready to be primed. With a sigh of relieved accomplishment, I shake the hell out of my rattle can and take it outside for a quick spray. Know what's awesome until it isn't? Automated sprinkler systems. Three sprays into priming and the stupid automated sprinklers outside go off. These normally get shut off in September where we live, and they were. Turns out the lines weren't drained in September, it got a little colder than expected this week, and the lines in our community froze up, so they had to be repaired and purged. Wouldn't you know it they decided to purge them in the middle of me priming. Instant blast of cold mist hits me, the MoE, and all the primer turns into instant fuzz. Model is ruined and has to be stripped. I put him down for two days. Minus the trip around town, repeat all the above steps again. His head was made of resin. Ruined during stripping. The sisters heads? Also made of resin. Ruined during stripping. Literally all of the work had to be redone from scratch. Luckily I had spare heads left over for both him and the sisters, else I doubt I would have touched him again. Today, he is finally finished for the second time. I decided to snap a photo of him before priming as I am scared out of my effing mind to take him outside for a second spray. Let this serve as a record that I did infact build and convert what I believe to be a super dope looking MoE. Sorry if the details are a little hard to make out, but that's him. The primer that's still on him is stuck where it's at. No amount of scrubbing will remove it. I'm hoping it's thin enough that another layer of primer won't fill in all the recessed details. So, before I take him outside and possibly lose my last remnant of sanity priming him, two questions: 1. Night Lords paint job or Sons of Malice? 2. He needs a name. Something that says "I refuse to be killed," because against all odds, this Master of Executions has been built despite every force in the universe trying to prevent it  Cheers, -Kal
