I big time love the new termie figs, and thought that I'd do it up for real (forgeworld shoulder pads) So yeah... here we go... Prefect Posted April 19, 2007 Author Share Posted April 19, 2007 Ok, Step 2: Inking Everyone says that they have a super hard time with yellow. I just don't see it... sure you could build up from black to brown, to yellow to white.... who has time? White primer and GW Yellow ink... boom... your base yellow is done. Step 3: Metallics and other base Colours Essentially, anything functional (ribbed joints, bolts, bolter mechanisms, sensors etc.) is painted Mithril Silver (or the brightest silver you can find) and anything ornamental (aquillae, shoulder symbols, termie honours etc.) is painted gold. Again, they're painted with the brightest gold you can find. Lastly, Parchment on the seals is painted bleached bone. I know alot of folks like the white, but I like the aged feel. And the seals themselves are scab red. (I actually use all of the Valejo paints, but have put the GW names in - I ONLY use GW inks... only thing they seem to have done crazy right.) Ok, don't let me forget to do the belts... haha I get so excited when it comes time to inking... I sometimes forget the obvious. but I digress... There seem to be two approaches that people go when they want to take their painting up one more notch. Start with black / darker colours and work yourself up leaving all of the black lines (I hate you folks that can pull this off), and then the lazy bums like myself who ink / blackline. Inks... I really have a love on for inks.... specifically brown GW ink. I've tried sooo many different kinds and it seems that brown ink just happens to work best. Everytime I end up at a Rogue Trader / GW store, I always leave with a pot of brown ink. Reasons for love include: - Blends your colours for you - Seeps into all of the cracks - Quick Application - Dries Fast - Makes me look like a far better painter than I am - Awesome Aging effect on metals. Actually the main reason that I use inks is that it offers a HUGE contrast without much effort. I like the way his targeter "pops" once you have the ink on. Essentially my "Rules" for inking: - Any place where two colours meet: ie. Between the bone colour of the seal parchment and the yellow - Any Metallic Surface: just a light wash over. If the area is larger (read AC barrels, just go in the creases) - Inside the "o" rings of the seals. This is why I always paint with the brightest of the metalic colours (there is typically no need to highlight saving time and blending). I'll need to clean things up on and around the shoulder pads but we're most of the way there. I DON'T do any inking on the Yellow! This gets taken care of later. As for cleaning up the yellow, I go over the affected area with white and just re-ink yellow... you'll see that one tomorrow, I'll also see if I can do up some pics of the whole squad so far. But the ink just looks slopped on in places. And the armor joints and the brown on the ass cannons look like they don't take care of their gear. Perhaps you should have repainted all the metallic areas black first before painting them metallic? They look fine for quick and dirty, but nothin beats succesive thin layers of paint to build the perfect yellow. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Hey Folks, damn that real life getting in the way... bloody clients, always wanting work for their money :D Ok, back to it: I cleaned up the ink with some sunburst yellow, did the "flip the fig upside down and see all the places that I missed" check. And then did my favorite part... DIP! I've tried to duplicate a lot of what we've seen on deathguard and bug armies, but I just couldn't get it to work... Well, I did a test a while back, and on yellow... it works (as my good friend Borat would say) VEEERY NIIICE! Here are the figs. They're a bit glossy, partly because they are still way wet, partly because of the two lights I used to take the pic, and well, partly because the finish is glossy. Some may really dig the gloss, but I usually finish with a light spray of Purity Seal to matt it up a bit. http://www.msight.com/40k/imperial_fists/squad_dipped.jpg Here is what I've been using for dip. http://www.msight.com/40k/imperial_fists/minwax_polyshades.jpg Minwax Polyshades - Satin Finish (bit more matt) - Pecan 320. I picked it up at Walmart for around $4. I've been toying with the idea of dumping half a pot of GW Flesh Wash in there, but wanted to maintain consistency with some of the other figs I've done. They take around two days to dry completely, then I'll highlight with Sunburst Yellow, go over the Metallics again, do the belts and finish the sarge's face More to come in two days. I've always loved the Imperial Fists (it always bugs me the the Black Templars get a codex, but the Imperial Fists don't), but light colours, particularly yellow, are a bugger to paint. This yellow ink over white seems to work rather well (particularly for those of us like me who are a little impatent). I ssecond you on that ink statement too, I love my chestnut ink. There's something magical about the way the "dip" runs... you get a really nice gradient on the yellow. The dip really adds to it, I like the way it blends for you. now if somebody could show me the dipping process on SW i would die content. About 5 seconds, then shake the snot out of them, for about another 30 seconds. Hey all, Ok back with the finished (YAY!) Pics. In the final step, I did the following. - Highlighted the Metal with Chainmail, Gold. - Highlighted the Yellow with Sunburst Yellow - Did the Sarge's Face and service stud. - Highlighted the weapons with Graveyard Earth. - Highlighted the Seals and Banners with Bleached Bone - Grabbed the super fine tipped Micron Marker and did the text squiggles on the seals and text / illustrations on the banners. - Gave the termies the Britanny Spears, Cristina Aguilara, too much eyeshadow thing around white then red ink eyes Based the figs in my favorite way... And that wraps up the tutorial. Here are the pics. The highlights show up better on the 'kidney' and 'but' plates, along with the top of the carapace. It's nice because you don't have the crazy white highlights but you still get the full range of gradient. Don't get me wrong, I really like contrast. On the table, these guys look awesome. **Note** you would want to stick with something with a satin finish. Something with a bit of texture. If you go gloss, the paint just beads off.
