I like the Sons of Rharm -- perhaps a Chapter of the same Founding of the Fighting Tigers of Veda?

Tridents -- probably what GW should have named the Emperor's Spears (look at their Chapter symbol).

The Certified - Interesting start to the background but I'm not sure either name (Certified or Sons of Sparta) really works for them.

Rainbow Warriors -- I've followed the discussions on the BL and the short story. Both very interesting takes. I always pictured them as more of a Polynesian background but the Aztec background is really good. Based off stuff in the old RT book I still think the RWs have been wiped out or culled by the Sisters of Battle.

As you'll probably get a few better responses in Liber Astartes I am gonna move this down there.

I like the Sons of Rharm particularly. Regarding the Space Sharks, I've often liked the sound of it, but the GW chapter symbol looks, well, pants. I much prefer the alternative version provided by Hanger 8 for a Dawn of War mod: link

Now there's a handsome symbol.

The one with the female space marine? Could be.

Tridents -- probably what GW should have named the Emperor's Spears (look at their Chapter symbol).

Yeah, I noticed them…

Perhaps the Emperor’s spear could be a successor? They kept the trident out of respect?

The Certified - Interesting start to the background but I'm not sure either name (Certified or Sons of Sparta) really works for them.

Any suggestions?

I wanted to go for a more ‘working class’ version of England, and delve into the ethos of such a society. I though the Eldar would make a good ‘middle class’ or if going old, Norman/ french substitute.

The English as a rather odd take on madness, ‘certified’ kinda plays up to that <_<

They are still on GW’s site, so they may be about – glad you like the idea though.

As you'll probably get a few better responses in Liber Astartes I am gonna move this down there.

Thanks <_<

That’s the original symbol of the space sharks, I think it came on a transfer sheet with the original Land Raider kit from… a long time ago.

You are right, it is better, I'll change it when I use the new B&C painter!

Rainbow Warriors -- ... Based off stuff in the old RT book I still think the RWs have been wiped out or culled by the Sisters of Battle.

That supposition is based on a single image in the RT book of a single Sister shooting a single Rainbow Warrior, I take it? While I can see your reasoning, to me that seems like a real stretch. Still, in the absence of any other info, and with the RW being effectively forgotten by GW I can't see many people getting upset enough to protest this too strongly.

I would put their disappearance from GW canon (until Deathstrike Chapter appeared with the same colourscheme) as down to there already being two blue marine chapters - Crimson Fists and Ultramarines - getting the big push in the early years of Rogue Trader's release, and a third blue marine chapter fell through the cracks and was rarely if ever mentioned.

I especially like "The Certified".
They have a pretty imaginative and different background that you could build on.
Not entirely certain about the colour scheme, but the background is cool! <_<

Love your artwork to by the way, and especially the Tau redesigns which I think look better than the original.

The picture is part of it. But a few pages later there is a passage detailing that the Sisters of Battle have a very important role when it comes to the Space Marine Chapters. The SoB are charged with maintaining the genetic purity of the Chapters. Those found to be devolving or other abherations are put to the sword by the Sisters of Battle. Combine that with the picture and you might have signs that something was wrong with the Rainbow Warriors and their gene-seed.

Now I don't think that their destruction or culling by the SoBs would have anything to do with them vanishing for 2nd edition and only reappearing in the things like the Bitz Bible for 3rd. Plenty of other Chapters vanished during 2nd and cropped back up in a limited roll in 3rd.

I'm also not saying that Philip S. should abandon his Aztec take on the Chapter, just adding as further commentary my own take on the Rainbow Warriors. A destroyed Chapter (whether in actual fluff or otherwise) doesn't mean that someone shouldn't flesh them out.

I really like the 'Certified'. Honestly, they've got an intriguing and interesting basis for the background and I'd love to see them expanded. I'd love to do the expanding!

With regards to the Space Sharks, however, I like the version put forth in Cpt. Tiberius' thread; an interesting idea and gorgeous artwork, too!

Good work!

They have a pretty imaginative and different background that you could build on.

Cheers mate, glad you liked it!

Not entirely certain about the colour scheme, but the background is cool! :)

I’ll redo it when the new B&C painter is online, I thinking of making it more obviously a cross on their armour.

Love your artwork to by the way, and especially the Tau redesigns which I think look better than the original.

Cause a bit of controversy among the hardcore Tau fans, but on the whole I think the liked the attempt.

I'm also not saying that Philip S. should abandon his Aztec take on the Chapter, just adding as further commentary my own take on the Rainbow Warriors. A destroyed Chapter (whether in actual fluff or otherwise) doesn't mean that someone shouldn't flesh them out.

I wanted to work up the rainbow warriors, because most think it is named after a ship, though there are many rainbow warrior myths (native American) to draw inspiration from, and the rainbow bridge Norse mythology.

I not saying it wasn’t named after the ship mind! But I think it was something that I could work with, and blend into the 40K ethos other flipping preconceived ideas.

I really like the 'Certified'. Honestly, they've got an intriguing and interesting basis for the background and I'd love to see them expanded. I'd love to do the expanding!

Go ahead and play with it. I wrote them to inspire others, and if you feel inspired: get cracking!

With regards to the Space Sharks, however, I like the version put forth in Cpt. Tiberius' thread; an interesting idea and gorgeous artwork, too! :)

I do like the artwork.

For my Space Sharks I wanted something that wasn’t based around the sea on their home world, as I felt this would be a lost opportunity. As they are Space Sharks, I imagined the sea of these sharks to be space.

And all the hunting tactics of the sharks kinda fell into place.

Like all these ideas, it's the core concept I after at the moment. Once the concept is fully crystallised, the background is easy!

PS: Sons of Sparta with change, I wanted to introduce a St George figure, but he was not born in Sparta! (I used this not because of the movie, but because of the Golden Daemon entry from yesteryear). I’ll make up a Turkish (or Turkish myth) based chapter and reference that instead. This was to point out that St George may be the patron saint of England but he’s not English! Thus Sgt (sergeant) Georgios was born ;)

God I hate to be one of the conformists, usually, but I have to say (bieng half English/Australian) I love the Certified, apart fromn the general ripping off of common names, although I have the same trouble as I am notoriously bad with names.

I myself like tattoos and have a couple on my arms and the idea of the chapters history bieng tattooed onto the black carapace is intriguing and, to be teenish, very cool.

Also I have read over your site many times before seeing this topic and I have to say your CG artwork is brilliant! I know I sound like a fanboy but your ideas about the Imperium, eldar, space marines and pretty much everything 40k seem to help make a bit more sense of it, and brings a bit more depth to the little things we dont know all that much about, despite its unnoficiality.

Although I think the Machine God thread a little off the wall, Interesting yes and definetly a great diversion, but I personally dont believe it!

Mmm yeah anyway, my vote goes for The Certified. Are you going to write an Index Astartes on any of them?

Conformity is only a problem if it is against your wishes!

but I have to say (bieng half English/Australian) I love the Certified, apart fromn the general ripping off of common names, although I have the same trouble as I am notoriously bad with names.

Glad you like the concept. The name ripping is kinda a tradition/ humour in 40K, which I thought I would carry on. Almost every name in 40K has been taken from somewhere else, often with very minor tweaks to get it under the radar.

I myself like tattoos and have a couple on my arms and the idea of the chapters history bieng tattooed onto the black carapace is intriguing and, to be teenish, very cool.

Seems a lot of people like the idea, it ties in with my other ideas of ritual scar designs and tattoos are being a layout for the Black Carapace dateline (nerves) route and plug markers. Kinda like a an illuminated manuscript version of schematic, mixed in with pictures and stories. Making the marine a living chapter icon.

May well do when the new B&C painter and wargear module comes out!

The Certified has a lot of background, based on my Ecorium designs, to show how the system works, and the gaming opportunities it presents. I’m thinking of expanding to include the gangs in the various towns, and the speed cult (which would play into the chapter, I quite like the idea of soaped up land speeders and motorbikes with ‘blown’ engines).

I think the Certified has a great potential for growth, you already have the main basis for chapter fluff; The homeworld. The culture, terrain climate and philosophies are all addressed in what you have and that is the best starting point for making a DIY.

Its definetly good stuff. Though your going to have to forgive me for stealing a little bit of inspiration from your tattoo idea for my own DIY (link in my sig). Sorry bout that but it worked so well with the stuff I had I hope you dont mind .

I sure hope the wargear mod for the painter comes along soon, cant wait :P.

I like the Maw, they could be quite charactfull. Though I have to ask, what relation does a bull have to a Maw, which is a mouth? Or rather, an evil-ish mouth.

Most of the chapters strength is 10 company scouts.

Deep dungeons and insane asylums where those fallen to the curse and contained

Could use some.... Grammar? hehe sorry, but one other question, why dont they just kill these cursed marines? Why keep them alive? Anyway good work, a bit short though.

Im really enjoying your take on those Marine chapters, your analytical and somewhat eccentric ;) take on 40k is really paying dividends with regard to the fluff you come up with phil. I must say i cant wait to see you do index astartes for your chapters, cos I know they will rock.

I have them planned, but I want a lot of background worked out before I write it up (hence all the brainstorming and asking for feed back).

I really like all of them, though i adore the SPACE SHARKS - i love the way you've said they hunt through Ecolocation.

I’m also thinking of adding some specialist sensors similar to life force detectors mounted in the beaks of mark six helms (mind you I also like the idea of some old mark 3 Iron Armour! (instead of Terminator armour))

I like the Maw, they could be quite charactfull. Though I have to ask, what relation does a bull have to a Maw, which is a mouth? Or rather, an evil-ish mouth.

The Bull relates to the Hittites and sacrifice, the Red Maw relates to the rampant blood lust. I’m thinking there is some religious significance, something along the lines that the Red Maw marines must consume blood sacrifices so that they may sacrifice themselves later for the chapters (and part of their internal cult.)

I haven’t really worked out the details, I just know it feels right.

Most of the chapters strength is 10 company scouts.

Deep dungeons and insane asylums where those fallen to the curse and contained

Could use some.... Grammar? hehe sorry,

Sorted (I'm too quick with the jotting down of ideas while thinking of ten things at once!)

but one other question, why dont they just kill these cursed marines? Why keep them alive? Anyway good work, a bit short though.

I thought about this and I felt that I should go against the grain, so I’ve added some religious/ cult style background to explain why they keep those marines about. It also seems to be very ‘Vampire’ though I do not say as much.

Hullo,

I really like your interpretation of the Space Sharks chapter, though I do think you're overdoing it a bit - echolocation, latin names for shark species etc. - but of course this monomania in IA articles is in the very finest tradition of W40k.

But notice is hereby given that the Privateers aspect and the color scheme, and certain other aspects, have been nicked for incorporation into my own DIY chapter. ^_^

I may, depends how they develop.

I always overdo it! It’s for other people to tone it down

You’re most welcome to use the ideas, let me know how you get on!

Liked them all Phil, especially "The Certified".

I does seem popular.

How about doing a welsh themed chapter now?

I may re-jig the Certified to take this into account. Although they are noted as ‘English’ is it really London which has a huge diversity.

I think that if I was to do an exclusively Welsh chapter I would go back in time to when they were fully independent (up to 1200 or something) and take it from there.

I did have an idea for a Celtic chapter (more Irish) with the Bards replacing the Librarians and ties to the Astropaths (choir… welsh choir?) and more 'warp pragmatic/ friendly/ mystical' but it was not distinct enough in concept from the Sons of Rarhm, but it is waiting in the wings until I have the eureka moment. Maybe I’ll tie them all together and make a world based on the predominant Celtic regions: Brittany, Cornwall, Ireland, Isle of Man, Scotland and Wales and emphasise the common bond? Maybe a group of linked Celtic worlds?

Any ideas welcome ^_^

Well I myself am a Welshman with Irish and English blood in my veins so I can help with some Celtic words as I'm a fluent speaker of Welsh (and english.)

Just make sure that the celtic patterns you use are not viking. They're easily mistaken as my Dad found out when he was trying to make his coat of arms.

Will do. I was thinking about colours, and green seemed to obvious, and looking at some old falgs I thought Black and white (or gold) and maybe light blue?

As a tie in to my 'Black Carapace looks like tribal tattoos/ scaring' idea, maybe the Celtic black carapace could be blue like woad body paint?

A darkish blue (such as regal blue) and gold are the best colours for a celtic chapter IMHO. They're actually the colours of my coat of arms (With viking patterns around the edges. ;) )

Have you been to a place called Castell Henllys in south-west Wales near Cardigan? It's an archaeological site of a an iron age villiage which has been rebuilt. It's a superb place to see celtic culture.

Hope this helps,
