Iron Father Rik Posted December 6, 2007 Share Posted December 6, 2007 You're going to have a hell of a job naming the Captains of each company of the Luna Wolves Legion! Each chapter now has, going by the assumption of one per company, 10 Captains. That's for a Chapter. A Legion consists of several, chapters... by which I imagine means more than one or two - probably along the lines of 6, 7, maybe up to 10 Chapters worth or more marines. They really were huge. To name that many captains is a tall order. Even for Chapters GW barely names any commanders, save the famous ones. This is to leave authors, and gamers, to make up their own. Also remember that the captains will change, regularly, as they are killed and someone else rises to the rank. If you name a specific Captain, you have to name the era and timeframe he was Captain in. For example, Marneus Calgar was a Captain once. He's not anymore, someone else is in his place. In equivalencies, you'd have: Company (LW) = Grand Company = Pre-Heresy Chapter. (Roughly anyways) Or am I off? bigred Posted December 13, 2007 Share Posted December 13, 2007 Oh, the utter confustion of Legion sizes and naming conventions. OK, lets see what we can clear up a little. The Horus Hersy books says the Legions were much larger than the later 40th Millenia 1000-man Chapters. Each of the Legions was originally a single Regiment of only several hundred warriors when the Emperor first created the Space Marines on Terra before the Wars of Unification. They grew slowly during the conflict were each several thousand men strong at the end Unification Wars, before the Great Crusade began. They only grew bigger from that point on. We are told that during the Great Crusade each Legion recruited from their newly adopted Homeworld's where their Primarch was discovered or from hundreds of the most feral, savage worlds scattered throughout the Imperium. "There was no limit on the size of a Space Marine Legion and most of them could muster at least 100,000 combatants. The Ultramarine Legions was by far the largest, and it's primarch, Roboute Guilliman, could call upon the services of over 250,000 Space Marines." (now we know why Horus was so determined to keep the Ultramarines from reinforcing Terra) Now the issue of ranks. With such large sizes, the ranks we associate with later 1000-man Chapters break down, and new terms are needed. This structure is described as loosely being followed by most Legions: 100 Men: Company (led by a Captain)5 Companies: Batallion (led by a Lieutenant Commander) 2 Batallions: Regiment, also known by some Legions as Wing, Chapter, Great Company (led by a Commander, Master or Lord Commander) So that leaves us with all the issues of exactly what rank terms are used by the various Legions and how many men did some of our favorite characters command. Take the Luna Wolves for example. Loken is described as a "Captain" but is a member of the Mournival, and the number of companies listed would seem to indicate that these are probably the larger 1000 man formations to make sense in the overall scale of the Legion. The Death Guard are said to have only been composed of 7 Great Companies but they were of much larger size than was normally the case in other Legions. Thus "Battle Captain" Garro probably commanded many more than the 1000 men the above chart indicated. These Legion formations also makes sense of the constant talk of the regular "line officers" who were common good soldiers but not the great leaders within their Legions. This rank makes no sense in the 40th Millenia, but with such giant Legions, each must have had dozens upon dozens of regular Captains who would never achieve the greatness to lead the larger formations or join their Legion's elite leadership councils. That in a nutshell is the real trick with the Legions, each used its own titles and varied its organization slightly. The rigid conformity you see by the 40th millenia did not exist at this time. And there were atleast 25 Companies, so that leaves you with plenty of space to invent names for your Luna Wolf commanders, or you could take inspiration from the art books. And damnit! He's listed in the initial dramatis personae for Horus Rising, but I don't believe we ever hear about him again. Did he stay loyal or did he join the lodge? Ensis Ferrae Posted September 11, 2008 Share Posted September 11, 2008 he was always talked about in the past tense. one thing i did have a problem with, in the later heresy books, when you had the word bearers... they talk about chapters... in the 41st millenium, we know that they have hosts (much like a loyalist chapter), wouldnt they have had a host, instead of chapter, even back in the pre-heresy days?
