The Legion of Taurus - a Chaos Marine army log

Thanks Mattias - your suggestions over the burns victim are cool, if only I'd thought of them before I'd painted it! Oh well, I'll know next time...

Well, another day, another Marine - this one is a middling attempt - I also realised that I'd forgot to add the pouch for the grenade to this model! :cuss :)

I hope to finish the next one by tomorrow afternoon. Then Another two, and on to a Rhino - just as well, I'm getting a bit bored of painting these ones now...

Thanks for looking!

Here's the next painted Marine in what is becoming a snooze-a-thon; I can't tell you how glad I'll be to be able to do the spawn as a complete change!

I've already started on the next two Marines, I should get one of them finished by Monday evening. Till then, thanks for looking! ;)

Gah, I know your pain.

Thats why to keep meself "fresh", I have my CSM running at the same time as my Vampire Counts to get some variety in. NAd when I can, I accept mini commissions from all forces. *waves Ork Nob about* Yay variety!

Thanks for your comments guys! :)

Nice work Firestorm40k. I can understand what you mean about the tedium, I now loathe painting white, and have a stupid, stupid number of marines left to do. Good luck when it comes to the spawn.

Well, I've seen your work and I'd say the pain is definitely worth the results; especially that Daemon Prince, which is looking excellent so far!

Ha, yeah variety is the spice of life - I guess it helps that I paint my Epic armies in tandem...

*waves Ork Nob about*

Put your nob away, you dirty boy. :P

*waves Eldar Autarch about*

Better ya clean faced cleanliness goody five arms?

ugh...dont feel that good...

Erm, quite... :P :D

Moving swiftly on, here are the final two (for now, anyway). Thank goodness for the Easter break (and my fiancée & baby both taking a looong nap yesterday afternoon :ph43r: ), I've really been able to get stuck in to these Marines, started Saturday and finished* this afternoon:

*I should say nearly, as after I'd taken the pic of the following Marine I realised I'd not finished the horn on the pistol, I'll do that tomorrow.

If anyone can remember that bad piece of fiction that started the log, well someone suggested that I make Sgt Venturius. It seems that this marine is hiding a little secret under his armour... ;)

So, bar some touching up, that's it for these fellas (at least, until I've finished the Combat Patrol list...); next I'll start on the Rhino, which will be interesting, and then the Chaos Spawn. I cannot tell you after all these weeks of painting metallics how much I'm looking forward to getting stuck in to these! For the time-being thanks for looking! B)

Hello, I'm back, and I've got a tank to show you for a change! :) I've started on the Rhino transport for the CC squad. I'm wanting to keep it in the character of this army, so I'm trying to adorn it with the Legion's symbol. Thankfully, I've got one of those Arcane Ruins sets, which has components which are perfect for this. Because I wanted to have the symbol on the hatch on the top of the Rhino, I couldn't use the standard hatch (I didn't fancy cutting one of those skulls with a saw-tooth pattern!), so I've been making some replacement hatches from plasticard. Here are some wip shots, still a lot to do, including green-stuff work:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Rhino_wip_2.jpg

Also, I had some spare time this afternoon so I indulged my self and took some pictures of the Marines I've painted so far on some of the terrain from my gaming centre - just 'cause I can! Here they are:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Army-27-03-08.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Standard_Squad.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Assaulting_Squad.jpg

While I was doing this I had the idea for a another short piece of fiction - brace yourself! :P

Gant slapped the scanner with back of his hand - still no signal. "For gak's sake, they don't pay us enough at that bloody mine, you'd think they'd have some cash left over for some decent equipment!" he cursed, his voice harsh and matallic through the rebreather mask.

He sighed, then turned to the rest of the patrol. "Well, Durnk and the rest were supposed to head this way, up to the pass over yonder. I'll take point; I expect their gakkin' transponders have packed in, that's all this is." He pointed to his left, then tapped the back of the scanner once more.

As they set off, he wondered for a moment why The Company would need to hire mercenaries like him for a job like this; after all, Xergev's Folly was an un-inhabitable rock in a system surrounded by asteroid belts that no-one in with any sanity would attempt to find.

They came to the pass, two walls of scorched-orange rock shooting up from the ground, long shadows stretching down them in the dusk's dying light.

Gant turned to one of his men. "Anything?" he asked; the other mercenary just shook his head, gesturing with his scanner.

"Great," muttered Gant under his breath, "another bloody grox-chase."

They nearly had reached the end of the path when Vargal called out.

"Sarge, you better take a look at this." The patrol stopped, and everyone turned to where Vargal was knelt. Gant walked through them and knelt beside him. "What is it?" "Shells. Empty shells," he held one up between his finger and thumb in front of Gant's masked face. "They aren't ours, either," finished Vargal, his voice flat. The two mercenaries looked at each other for a couple of moments, as though sharing some unspoken thought, then Gant rose sharply.

"Safeties off, check your - " he was cut off by a shout from Buln, the light of his scanner illuminating his rebreather.

"Contacts! Multiple contacts! They're all around us!"

The mercenaries looked up and around them in alarm, pointing their guns up the walls of the pass. Gant let out a sharp cry of alarm as he caught a glimpse of shadows moving on top of them.

"Holy sh-" he started to exclaim, before a dozen guns opened fire on the patrol, cutting Gant and five others down in seconds. The others were felled by chainswords as their assailants emerged from the shadows behind them.

* * *

Garashan ejected the spent clip from his Bolter, dumping it on the ground amongst the bodies of the mercenaries in a disdainful manner. He turned to the rest of the squad, who were stabbing the mercenaries' bodies with their knives, ensuring there would be no survivors from their ambush. They stopped and looked at the Aspiring Champion.

"This sector is clear. The next patrol is 4 clicks east; then the mine is ours. In the name of Tauran, prepare the ambush."

The other Chaos Marines nodded, and they stepped silently in to the nocturnal shadow of the pass.

Right, I'll carry on working on the Rhino over the next few days, for the time being I hope you all enjoy the pictures, thanks for looking! :)

Thanks Kushan and Darth, glad you're liking what I'm doing B) Here are some more wip-pics. Inspired by the tanks inElotsip's incredible Chaos Militia army, I decided to have a go at converting some for the tanks in this army, seeing as the standard Rhino & Land Raider tracks have Imperial Symbols.

I'm looking for some feedback - do you think this is looking alright, or should I just use the normal rhino tracks? Here's the pics to help you decide:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Rhino_Tracks_wip_2.jpg

I'm reasonably please so far, if the general consensus is that these look good enough I'll do the other side's tracks.

Thanks for looking! ^_^

Thanks, I just made toast - I thought so too, so did the other tracks the same :)

After a quick bit of sculpting yesterday, here is the tank as it stands now:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Rhino_wip_3_Right.jpg

I also finished the horns on the rear hatch; yesterday when I first added the horns to this skull they curved round at the bottom - I wasn't happy with how it looked, thinking it looked more like pig-tails. I asked my fiancée if she thought the same, she agreed, but added it might look better if I cut off the curves. So I did this today, I'm slightly happier, but I think I stuck the em too high to begin with. Anyway, here's the pic:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Rhino_wip_4.jpg

I'm going to paint the interior first then assemble the rest of the hull. More pics as work progresses, thanks for looking! :jaw:

Nice work!!!but Omg i have the same colour scheme for my Darksteel CSM chapter))gunna shot up myself)

Thanks Incarnatus - and don't worry, you're not the first person to say that; we'll just have to consider our armies as being under the same 'influence' from the Warp, shall we say... :P :)

looking good firestorm40k. i do have one question. where did u get the skulls on the rhino? are they self made or bought?
Yeah, I'm really curious as to where you got the plastic skulls. I don't recognize them from any GW kits... :)

Thanks lads, I wish I were talented enough to sculpt these, but this is where they're from:

I've got one of those Arcane Ruins sets, which has components which are perfect for this.

There you go, those Fantasy Arcane Ruins are a must for Chaos players with a predilection for adding big skulls to their conversions! ;) :)

Looking real here :pinch:

nice job with the GS on all the models

this might be a bit late but i saw ur post about the cast of the skull with the horns that tore apart when u wnated to remove it form the mould.

A little trick for that is to add a really thin layer of vaseline in the mold before u put the GS in it, this helps getting it out in one piece

Keep up the good work B)

i like the track's of the rhino, but maybe some broken track because the rhino is chaos :P

and it is one of the best armies i've seen in a long time :)

those tracks are great, you must have a lot of patience ^_^.

I had some doubts at the beginning of this project, but now its safe to say that its a truly amazing army, the metallics are wonderful, and just about everything else too!

The skull on the front of the rhino looks a tad cartoony though, but I imagine it won't with paint.

Thanks Xayver, for the time-being I don't need to do any GS casting - but the next time I do I'll give the Vaseline a go!

Aww, thanks very much Azura, that's a great compliment! :D B) I don't know about making broken tracks, but I'll definitely be making them look more weathered before I paint them...

Thanks Lord Donute, yeah it does look perhaps a tad ott, but hopefully the paint will rectify that. Hopefully...

I've continued working on the Rhino, last night I painted the interior prior to glueing the hull together. Admittedly it's a very quick dry-brush job, but I tried to add some extra detial like shine from the light sources (not sure that it came out particularly well to be honest, but it was only my first attempt at doing anything like that - and most of the time it won't be visible 'cause it's in the tank! :D ). Here's a pic:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Rhino_Interior.jpg

I decided to put a bit of extra effort on the control panel; I replaced one of the screens with signs of daemonic activity (I figured that as the origins of this army is only 2000 years old, the corruption wouldn't be as great as the original traitor legions - totally twisted beyond their original recognition):

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Rhino_CP_Detail.jpg

So now these are done, I'm goign to glue the hull together and paint the rest of the tank - but before I do that I have a quandry that i'd appreciate feedback on.

Basically, I can't decide whether to leave the exhaust vents as they are, or replace them with the gargoyle heads from the Chaos Vehicle Accessory Sprue, or simply add them on top. Any suggestions will be appreciated! Thanks for looking! B)

Very nice work on the Rhino there Firestorm40k. The giant skulls do look a tad cartoony as mentioned, but I'm sure a weathered paint job will help remove that. The tracks are certainly interesting. I'm not overly sure on how they go with the Rhino yet, but again I'm sure the paint job will help. I can only state that it's a shame however that a rock isn't incorporated into the Rhino somewhere. It'll be good to see it finished.

Darn it, Xanthier, you're right - I knew there was something missing! :P :D

Well, I came to a decision about the exhaust vents - in the end I decided to keep them as they were - felt the Rhino looked 'Chaos-y' enough without them - too many cooks, y'know?

Anyway, I've now assembled it, added some putty to smooth the join in some areas, tomorrow when it's dry and rough parts have been smoothed I'll prime it ready for painting. Can't believe I've been two weeks at this so far... :tu:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Rhino_wip_5b.jpg

Also, whilst I've been waiting for Green Stuff to dry, I've got rather ahead of myself and started working on the first spawn - well, I had to have something to carry on with in the meantime... <_<

After weeks of making Marines, Marines and more Marines it has just been a blast to cut loose and let my imagination run wild on this. There's still a fair way to go on it (plenty of sculpting), I don't want to give away too much for the time-being - but here's a tease:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Spawn_Tease.jpg

More pics soon, thanks for looking! B)

very nice concept and very good looking army.

do you know my 4-leged dreadnought? ... i think a similar one with a bullhead or the head from the bellrog would fit perfectly into this army.

it would look like a huge angry bull, ainming at nearby enemies with his mighty horns ... - what do you think? ;)
