Help me pick an army theme

Recommended Posts

I've been playing for several months now and i've got ~25-30 games under my belt but i am still no closer to figuring out what sort of chaos army i want to play. Up to this point i have just been trying out all sorts of stuff with a radically different list each game. I've got plenty of regular marines, and all cult marines except plague. I've tried just about every hq combination. I think i've got nearly 4000 points of models. But what i really want to do is make up my mind on what my war band should actually be so that i can sit down and paint it. I have some ideas for what i might want to do and some for what i don't want to do. I'm hoping you all can give me some advice and help me decide.

Things i like:

-Terminator lords and sorcs, daemon weapons, psychic powers

-berzerkers, possessed, dreadnoughts

-proper terminator squads (not just 3 man combi suicide)

-armor

-Thousand sons

-deepstrike bombs (terms and lesser daemons)

things i don't like much:

-daemon princes don't really appeal as much as lords and sorcs fluffwise despite their power

-plague marines seem to be spammed by every chaos player i face. I'd only use them if i played a pure nurgle force, and then only a squad or two max unless it was themed deathguard

-oblits are like daemon princes and plague marines. cookie cutter. I'm not going to avoid them just because of that, but i prefer armor

So those are my basic unit preferences. What it boils down too is some sort of combination of undivided, khorne, and tzeentch with plenty of armor. Bearing in mind that i want to be very fluffy, here's my ideas:

-Theme Thousand Sons or World Eaters. Both are cool, but are they feasible? I don't see any reason not to be fluffy and competitive.

-Warband with 1 undivided hq, and 2nd hq could be khorne or tzeentch. most units would be undivided except for a squad of zerks and squad of thousand sons. Could be more flexible and competitive, but i know some people would object to khorne and tzeentch in the same army. This would basically be black legion with a different name, and i have no real love for black legion.

-Themed list with proxy units. Play something like the Scourged (all troops with icon of tzeentch, sorc lord) and then do something like have fairly mutated marines (not as mutated as possessed) using berzerker rules to represent the ones who have gone insane from the voices in their heads. Would probably feature a squad of 1ksons. Could be cool, but some people will complain that i'm just twisting fluff to use a cheesy combination. Would it be tourny legal?

-Theme Cleaved or Purge. Everything with icon of nurgle, maybe a squad of plague marines. I do like nurgle, just less than others.

So, does anyone have any input or advice? Anyone play one of these or thought at it before? Or anyone have other fluffy ideas to suggest?

I've played both, and they are both feasible. I'd vote for the Thousand Sons over the WEs, as I just LOVE the 4+ invulnerable (Last game watching meltaguns bounce off my Sons was priceless). Simply take a few "specialist" units to make up for the weaknesses of the Rubrics (Assault, mostly...lol).

I like this idea, as I haven't seen many (Or any, actually) Scourged armies out there. As GW nerfed the idea of inter-God rivalries, I see nothing wrong with Bezerkers in a Tzeentch force (I don't use them, but my force is mostly "pure" Thousand Sons with a long-standing grudge against the local WE and Nurgle players...lol). It SHOULD be tournament legal, and might even get you a few extra points (depending on the tourney rules used) for having a well thought-out and written up fluff.

Sounds like except for the T'sons you like to get up close and fight hth.

- As for the cult legions, I would say WE over T'sons for you b/c of this.

- Themed w/ proxy units, I wouldn't suggest this since you want to play fluffy. Alot of people think proxy or "counts as" stuff is lame (brzrkrs "counting as" crazed Tz worshipers in a "scourged" army for example would definately get you the hairy eyeball)

- From what you've written I would suggest a "black legion" style army with your own name and paint scheme. Make up your own fluff and your own paint scheme and pretty much do what you want. People should not object to Tz and khorne in same army as they were not achient enemies, especially if you have a undivided HQ.

Chillin is right, Chaos Undiv. is the most fun (IMO), as you can bring what you need, i.e. if you are fight a horde style army you can bring in the units that will help you the most.

If you want Noise Marines, Khorne Zerkers, TSons in the same army you can, so you could do Black Legion or make your our CSM.

Which is the most fun making your own fluff again IMO.
