I decided to finally take the plunge and start a new PH army along with the release of 5th edition and the new SM codex in Oct.
I just finished/am finished reading "Galaxy in Flames", and was really inspired by the loyalist World Eaters forces on Istvaan III as led by Capt. Ehlren (sp?).

I figure as far as to be fluff correct I need to include as much, or exclude as much of the following as possible:

YES:
studded shoulder pads,
Mk4 and Mk 6 helmets.
chainweapons!!!!!
running assault legs
blades. frags, jumppacks,
skulls and trophies
screaming bare heads.....

NO:
imperial aquillas, or eagles,
crux terminatus
few as possible purity seals, they can be oath pledges, or whatever they were called....
as few heavy support weapons as posssible.

What other suggestions do you have for helmets, weapons, etc.
I'm thinking once the new codex comes out I'll clean up a real list of them using "counts as" type rules
lots of assault marines, vanguard veterans, some homemade scouts like prophet's style....

if you have pics of yuor PH World Eaters please share!!

Good place to start is the Bezerker box set just for the running legs and chainaxes. Also it would be easy enough to remove any khornate markings with a file and use the chests as well (as far as I remember the only khorn markings are on the belt buckles), just file off the chaos points on the chainaxes and your laughing. Also the Red Scorpions upgrade kit from forger world is as good a place as any to get your hands on pre heresy helmets and chest plates. Hope this helps.

You can also get a set of 10 chainaxes from FW
In Inquisitor, a Space Marine can take a krak grenade, pull out the pin, eat the grenade, throw the pin, and the thrown pin will actually kill a normal man, whereas the Space Marine won't even have indigestion.

If it takes more than 20 bolter rounds to take something down, maybe you should leave it alone...

I'd say go FW,provided you can afford it.The Red Scorpions set is amazing for pre-heresy armies.Combining that with a berzerkers box is the best way i can imagine to go for World Eaters.Alternatively, you could just chop the bunny ears off the zerkers, that would give you some great helmets.

Cheers!

Thanks for the replies,

In keeping with the fluff as much as possible I am going to have a large number of chain wepaons (obviously),

but I have also grown found of the black templar upgrade spure....
I was thinking specifically of using the bolters with chains for my tactical/fire support squads.

I mean it's great to have a bunch of madmen rushing forward with knive, chainaxes and bolt pistols, but I think they might need a little support in the way of covering bolter fire!

And, here's a question for you,

how do I convert or creat chainswors holstered?

Try this website for specific bits from the plastic kits. A;; the stuff is off the sprue so you don't have to buy an entire sprue just to get that one head/arm/weapon you need.

I am constructing a similar army myself, and thought I would share a few pointers from things I have researched.

The majority of your list seems fine! My only concern would be with including too many mk.6 suits of armour. The armour was only just entering service at the outbreak of the Heresy - it certainly would not be in wide usage. However, I could imagine perhaps some officers and specialists getting first option on the relatively few suits that were available (although the last point is only my own conjecture).

As for the rest of the armour, there are 2 main schools of thought as to how to represent it:

Firstly, you can copy the example given in the Horus Heresy Art books and CCG, where virtually all World Eaters are represented in Mk 4 armour. Certainly this is the more traditional approach, and I would advise the Red Scorpions chapter upgrade already mentioned.

However - going on the new HH book, Battle for the Abyss, the World Eaters are represented as wearing a variety of older mk 3 suits which are damaged, un-adorned armours made from composites of different suits.
If you are going for this option, then the easiest way of representing the MK 3 helmet is with these Beserker Helmets with the 'bunny ears' removed, and then go for a mix of diffferent arms/legs/body pieces.

Personally, I am going for a mix between the 2, going on the logic that some of the marines might have the older suits of armour, with about 50% of them in mk4 suits, and a select few wearing the mk6 'corvus' suit.

Another important point surrounds what point in history do you want your World Eaters to represent? As the great crusade continued, Angron had more and more cranial 'implants' used by his Marines (despite the wishes of the Emperor) - therefore, if you are setting your army during the great crusade or towards its end, a 'Space Marine' or 'Blood Angel' list is perhaps most appropriate (as recommended by the Bell of Lost Souls Heresy rules). However, just before or during the Heresy (where most of the marines have the implants, and have therefore gone a bit mental!) then perhaps a chaos Beserker list is more appropriate.

As to your final point though, why would a World Eater ever have a chain weapon holstered? :)

Here is one of my beserkers, sorry for poor photo quality (i have had it pointed out white background for a white model is a bad idea :) )

The black templar bolter arms sound like a great idea. Plus you'll get four Mk3-ish and two Mk4 helmets/torsos to go with them too. Very useful.

With the chainswords, I'd just grab some GS, roll it into a sausage and press it down over the teeth. basically square it off then stick a larger sausage at the top to make the connection to the strap. Alternatively, I always imagined that when not in use, the teeth could lay flat, so look like they've retracted into the weapon cowling, in which case you just have to do the strap at the top, remove the chain teeth and deal with the splash guard at the end of the blade... Hope that helps!

I've been working on some (no pics :( ), and I really like using the "chained" chainswords from the Templar packs. I want to say it mentions somewhere in Galaxy in Flames(though I could just be making it up) that a World Eater had his weapon chained to his arm in case he dropped it in a berserk rage. Even if it doesn't say that anywhere, it makes perfect sense to me ;)

i totally agree with you there
i'm planning on mixing the black templars stuff with the bezerker stuff to make my pre-heresy Worldeaters
i also love the idea of them chaining the weapons to themselves in case they "loose it"

YES:
studded shoulder pads,
Mk4 and Mk 6 helmets.

To a lot of people studded pads and beakies scream pre-heresy.. however to the fluff purists the scream otherwise: studded pads were only introduced with Mk5, which was only put into production once Horus Heresy erupted, whilst Mk6 only went into production whilst Horus' forces were advancing through the Terran solar sytem.
i hate to break it to you chaps, but according to the English Language a Chevron is a V shape, if your 'Chevrons' are not V shaped then they are just hazard stripes NOT Chevrons

Wow, all the replies as of recent have been great, and filled with a lot of helpful hints, tips, and links too.

Pacific81 and Sigismund H., I totally hear what you said and think I follow that route.

I'm going to use mk4 helmets I have, use some of the ' crusade' style helemts from the black templar sprue, ans see if I can get by without spending the money on bits for the 'Zerker helmets.

I'm thinking of giving the bolter armed squad a sgt. with bp and chainaxe/sword, and maybe have the special weapon be a melta or flamer.

I've got another squad in production of all holstered bolters, and chain weapons and pistols.

I'll get some pictures up of the work in progress in a few days.

Things to ponder:
plasma pistol would be a rare weapon during heresy?
flamers more accurate as a special weapon?
what do you think about the look of a shaved down mk. 7/8 helmet?
Should I include a heavyweapon in the tactical style squad that has mostly bolters?

Thanks again.

Go plasma or flamer, meltas were pretty new and rare in M30 ;)

So was plasma buddy ;)

I think a heavy weapon in a tactical squad would be fine:

- either an autocannon (using a shortened one from the Imperial Guard heavy weapons sprue seems to be popular for that)
- or a missle launcher - for real authenticity, the 1 in the HH artbooks looks very much like the one from the RTB01 marine sprue (the very first marine box!) Some bitz sites have them for sale, otherwise it will most likely be an ebay purchase for that one im afraid!
- Finally you could just use a heavy bolter - although I can't remember any specific examples of them, I would guess shoulder mounted as this seems to be how most of the other heavy weapons are carried (2nd edition marine carried it this way)

For the mk5 helmet, a mk7 helmet is indeed one way of doing it.
You will need this helmet - the one with 2 wires running into the grill on each side, shave the 'air intake' bit off the top.

For the studs, a popular methods is to buy these.. The #154 rivets are about the correct size
Use a GW drill to make the small holes to stick the rivets into - very time consuming, but really the best way of doing it and the effect is excellent when carried over the entire armour!

Adding extra cabling to the assault marine chest piece is a good way of modelling that part - click here!

Are you sure about that? The 2nd edition Chaos Codex specifically used Melta weaponry an example of the state of Imperial tech: Meltaguns were in common use due to the Imperium having found a fully functional design, but they had yet to fully grasp the principles behind it that would later allow them to develop Multi-Meltas. (also Space Marine 1st edition was set during the Horus Heresy, and had Meltaguns as the standard Tactical squad special weapon, but thats going back to mid-RT)

There were melta weapons and even Multi-meltas during the HH - case in point, one of the HHCG cards features a marine melting a massive hole in a dreadnought with one. However, I believe they were a fairly new technology at this point. There use would heavily depend upon what era of the great crusade you are planning on modelling (and even to a lesser extent what expedition fleet is represented, as they would not all of had constant resupply and refitting).

Certaintly though, I agree that the period approaching the end of the great crusade and the heresy itself featured the highest level that imperial technology would ever reach in some regards - Jet bikes being just one example of technologies lost subsequently, with many other things (such as plasma weapons, dropship and drop pod technology) would gradually start to fall into dissrepair as the understanding of them became less and less.

Also, trying to include RT information within the currently accepting timeline is an extremely tricky business. Although there has been some effort to ret-con the later timeline so that the information in the first rulebook isn't completely irrelevant, there are whole aspects of it which have been either completely ignored or else replaced subsequently (such as the marines being genetically enhanced, rather than just 'chemically hardened', or being little more than well-armoured criminals and psychopaths, for example). Really the 1st edition 40K Compendium was the first publication to write about marines as we know them today, anything before that has to be viewed with a certain amount of ambiguity!

Here's an update, with pictures to follow later today of the 1st works in progress I have going.
(My camera's batteries have to charge !)

All squads will number 8 men strong

Squad #1: ALL Mk.4 armor
sgt. with bolt pistol and chainsword
special weapon trooper with plasma gun
hvy weapon trooper with M.L. (converted one to look like clip-fed RT one)
five marines with bolters and combat knives, axes, etc.

Squad #2: armor to be determined as of yet
sgt. with power fist and bolt pistol (might sub-bp for a chain weapon)
special weapon / flamer
6 marines with bolters (converted to old style with clip up-front, and some type of HTH weapon)

Squad #3: Khârn's men, all/most have newer Mk5 armor
sgt with power axe and boltpistol
plasma pistols? (if an asslt. unit)

I have already decided to convert a PH Khârn, as well as a termie chaplain for fun as my HQ's.

Pacific81, what didi you mean about extra cables on the assualt marine's torsos? Where would you incorporate them??
Oh, and great look on the rivets they are going to be an acquisition in the near future too!!

I think for squad #2 I might GS some of the newer mk helmets with the 'cables' at either side of the grill and make them into an old style MK 3 iron armor helmet, way I figure some careful filing and cutting and a smooth skin of GS with a vertical GS slit would do it.

what do you think?

Pictures to follow at the end of the day too.

Batteries are all charged-up, and here are some pictures as promised:

Keep in mind this started, as most projects do, as a side distraction with bits left over from ym other three to four projects!
Yes I have a major probelm with modeling space marine armies!!!

I'm going to add a lote of details to these models yet; such as skulls/trophies, combat knives, etc.
There will be some GS as well to tidy up some of the arm joins, etc.
I like the idea of "oath papers" as in HH novel Galaxy in Flames.
Purity selas and tabards will fit this bill, and also help create a sense of movement.
