Change of Colour

Wolfbrothers,

A stupid question, but did anyone else notice in the 5th Edition Rules that the chapter seems to have gone more grey and less shadow grey? There are very few pictures in the rulebook and I wondered if the last 20 new Blood Claws I've been painting are going to end up as being the wrong colour?

Your thoughts?

There is no "wrong" color, your variant chapters can be whatever color you please, but for the most part it's more common to see space wolves grey, shadow grey, and codex grey as the "standard" if you will. :)

I suspect you will see a "newly" painted army of Space Wolves using the Fenris Grey with highlights. I've not seen how different the color is between Shadow Grey and Fenris Grey is, but assuming that there is a noticable difference, I'd bank on a newly painted SW army and photos in the book to match the Fenirs Grey color scheme.

Gotta sell those paints!

I am actually looking into making my new Space Wolf army Fenris Grey (when I can finally see how it will actually look in decent light, or I buy the pot and paint a test).

As others have said though, there is no standard, especially for Space Wolves...basically as long as you can call it grey it would fit in with the background (or you can make a divergent chapter...they need a decent shoot-off chapter =P)

  • 2 weeks later...

I noticed this too when my wife and friends were looking over the rulebook. The seemed to feel that the grey on the blood claws looked a lot like the codex grey color scheme of the 13th company. Could this be a further way of differing the packs? The only idea that lends credence to this is that it received 2 different spots on page 133 ( I believe) just as the blood angels did, as they too have 2 color schemes. Both wolves were from Ragnar's company, and while the blood claw had the tradional red and yellow shoulder pad, the grey hunter did not have any red or black. Finally, most of those images ie Ultramarines, Dark Angels, and Black templars were lifted directly from their codices and have bee reused multiple times over in white dwarf and other fluff. That was the first time I saw those images used for the wolves.

Just thought I throw out my two cents, I won't go as far as my wife did, predicting that those images were taken from the upcoming Space Wolf codex.

I tend to go with a different approch to most it my painting anyway...

What I end up with is my 'new' troops, ie Blood claws and such, are very blue... dark colors. Fenris Grey with shadow grey and such... the older my troops get, ie grey hunters ---> long fangs, the lighter thier armor gets.

That way at a glance I can tell my squads worth just by the color of thier armor, lol.

I have painted most of my Space Wolves in a very Dark Grey along the lines of the older RT era Compendium. I like the darker grey color for the Wolves. I even checked it against the Index Astartes book section for the Space Wolves, and the color for mine are Pre-Heresy Grey. I am hoping to get a few more painted and detailed so I can post them here to see what you all think.
