Im making a fenrisian board, ideas?

I have a got a 3ft by 6ft board down below my house (ive got a basement sorta thing) and im planning on making a board on it (with permanent terrain).

This idea has come from me and my mate, that we want to make a board with the plains of fenris, leading up the slopes of Mt. Asaheim, and leads onto/into the Fang. We have little ideas of what the slopes, and background of the snowy wastes of fenris would b like, also with the Fang, (i imagine it being a dome shaped fortress, with heavy bolter emplacements around it, with the hanger on one side, with the 2 great wolves at its entrance).

i have had these references from the SW dex, and also from reading the SW novels, with paying attention to the fang, and the terrain and such around the fang due to such moments.

Would anyone have any idea of what to use for the snow/ish look, and what terrain would b used on a barren hill/slope to get to the fang. (currently will be used with the 5th ed fortress rules, with armour, firing points and such).

Also any thoughts of what the Fang would look like from peoples perspectives, could help greatly, and make the board all the same from all suggestions :)

the fang is the greatest fortress outside of terra it is said to be like a mountain stretching up out of the atmosphere of fenris it to has a spacedock capabale of houseing the space wolf fleet it has defense laser emplacements linked to the thermal shaft which runs to the planets core the fang is a massive impregnable fortress the thousand sons legion and there primach and the armys of bucharis couldnt breech its was

there are tombs of old great wolves on the uper sloaps i see the fang as a massive fortress mountain if you can check out the old 2nd edd codex space wolves it has some very nice fluff in it

I think even the large side of your board would be too small to build the main gate of the Fang. I would make a small side entrence, wide enough for a LR, maybe some gun emplacements, at one corner of your board. The Fang is really high. It pierce the atmosphere of Fenris and the docks for the Fleets are at the top of it, so it must be at least one hundred kilometers high. And the Fang was designed as the home of a Legion. If you make the Gate that large it would cost you a great amount of your game area. To give you a small imagination how large the main entrence of a medium sized BT chapter outpost could be here´s a pic of the the great display at my local GW store. That´s 2x3 48"x48" boards

For a Fenris like board you should take a look at the 4th ed rulebook. In the hobby section had been a nice table that would be perfect. IIRC it shows a battle between IG and Necrons. I would use this as a reference.

Well I would say a Fenrisian board would mainly be a large ice and snow covered field with large hills and deep crevasses.

As for trying to model the Fang on a board even that big....you might be able to get one of the small foothills of the mountain on there without taking up all the space. According to the stories, the Fang is the largest mountain found so far in the known galaxy.

yeh, ill probably just make a small fortress at the top of the hill, and slow advancing hill up, with snow piles, snow boulder sorta things, and crevaces/trenches for cover.

As to making the whole fang, i knew i wouldnt b able to, due to the board size, but hey, we can still try :)

you know what would be cool? the beaches of Asahiem have 2/3 the table covered in solid frozen ground so that is about a 3ft x 4ft part of the board maybe more and then the beginning of the ocean on the rest of the baord and have large pieces of ice floating on the water. maybe even a special rule like it counts as dangerous terrain to cross this have frozen body of water. Maybe?

If i was doing this id start by getting something like this

Its polyester rocks used to let water run on it, but it make a fantastic section of the fang

Go to garden centres and have a look there, most have this kind of stuff

One thing you must remember too is to make it a area that is both defensively and offensively viable.....you could put a years worth of work into it and make it one of the best looking tables of all time and it will be worthless for games if no one wants to play on the opposite side of you due to the inability to attack or defend....

I seem to recall from ancient fluff that the slopes of the Fang are dotted with heavily armored/defended ventilation outlets, the location of each being a closely guarded secret. Might be an interesting terrain piece/objective to add to a Fenrisian board... Simply use an old computer fan for the vent itself, and add Cities of Death building bitz...

By putting the rock on the short end you can prevent problems like that, You both have part of the rock and both have the plane

Well what I was meaning is that there needs to be a balance of structures and terrain pieces so as to not give either side an advantage, although maybe slightly more on the attacker side due to LOS rules now and the fact they would literally have the high ground and be able to see over most of the terrain especially at the top. If he barely would put anything at all on the offensive side nobody would play against him unless he played that side.

I think the first rule in making your own terrain would be a question, "Would you play on the other side of the board?"

Also a good idea might be to get all your big pieces, put them on the board, and then play a game....if the game is fun, go ahead....if not use the opinion of the other player(s) to make it better for both sides.

hmm.. i spent all of last night thinking up rules for this board, and here they are:

Board Design/Brief

The Brief description of this board is just an assault against a fortress sort of set-up.

It consists of an icy path (leading to the fortress).

1 – 2 big icy boulders at the bottom of the hill to provide cover (on both sides).

2 trenches on each side to provide more cover (meaning 4 in total)

On the last trenches toward the fortress, are to have slopes to make easy passageway in/out of the trench.

The Fortress will have 2 twin linked heavy bolters outside the fortress with AV12 (can be destroyed).

The fortress will have 1 big heavy door on each tower (2 in total) and they count as firing points.

At the top of each tower, will be Missile launchers or more twin linked heavy bolter turrets with AV12 (can be destroyed). Also meaning, a unit can enter the big heavy door, and wait a turn to climb up the stairs to the top of the tower to shoot the weapons at the top of the tower.

The Big heavy Entrance door to the fortress will have AV14 (being able to be blasted open) and takes a turn for a unit to pass through the door, due to its massive size, and its slow movement of opening/closing.

The Fortress will also have a power regenerator, which means selecting one unit at the beginning of the turn and re-roll all failed shooting rolls to hit.

There will be slopes against the fortress to gain entry to the doors in the towers, these will count as difficult terrain, and on the inside of the fortress, will have passageways alongside the wall, being able to shoot from the side (if desired, the unit can enter the door at the bottom, wait a turn and emerge from the door/s on the walls edge, or vice versa, enter the door from the wall, wait, and emerge out of the fortress.

The home planet will be set on any random snow planet when decided, unless the defender is playing Space Wolves, if the defender is playing Space Wolves, then he may have the ability to select one unit each turn to re-roll a failed morale check (second result is final).

Before the game begins, we roll to see the conditions the weather will be on that certain day of battle, on a 1-3 it’s a nice easy sunny day so normal rules apply.

If rolled on a 4-6 then there is a blizzard around on that day, so roll again.

On the roll of a 1-3 the blizzard starts early and consists from turn 1 to 4.

If u roll a 4-6 then it consists from turn 4/5 to 7/8.

If there is a blizzard, then we will use the Night fight rules to see how far u can shoot (please remind me on how to play a night fight mission, I haven’t played one in about a year, I think it was.. 2D6 x 3 is how far you can see)

And so happen that there is a rune priest on the field, and has casted the storm caller ability or whatever its called during the time of the blizzard, the player gains 1+ to their cover save.

The Attackers will also gain 1+ to their cover saves if in cover, if not, then they conver up a 6+ cover save for being out in the open, chances are the blizzard blew away a shot from someone (don’t know how that will work with a lascannon :|)

Finally, if being played on, it will count as an annihilation mission, but with the purposes of the attackers annihilating the defenders, and the defenders killing of the attackers while trying to keep their defences up. This game will use the long table edges set up meaning 12” deployment (but the table will be played long ways, have fun trying to advance up the hill :|

) and will be played on probably a turn count of 7 – 8 (due to playing long ways).

Hopefully this will be an awesome board, once its built, and if there is any ideas you can add to this, much appreciated =D

Sounds like an interesting way to play on this board, It would probably take more time figuring out the board rules and whether there's a blizzard or not, all the weapons, power generators and such than it will playing the actual game.

Can't wait to see some pics. :(

PICTURES PICTURES PICTURES!!!! :D

Brother, sounds like a sweet plan, but I should imagine you'll have to play test a couple of times to work out the bugs. Like the old adage goes, No plan survives first contact with the enemy.

But, I really looking forward to seeing pictures!

If you haven't already, check out the Apoc. Reloaded 'dex, It has a nice battle report of an ork force attacking imperial emplacements. It'll give you a bit more of an idea on some relatively balanced rules for it.

also, if you have the room in your basement, I'd look at acctually making it 2x 6'x4' boards, that can be pushed together to make one big board. Even a side entrance to the fang would need to be large enough to allow passage of at least the smaller titans, and heavily defended enough to take some serious punishment (so imo has to be AV14 on every structure point). Have the gate sought of offset into the corner of one of the tables, with a war-torn, snowy, landscape leading up to it. Riddled with trenchworks, bunkers, and weapon emplacements, although needs to have a road running through all of that (passage in and out of the gate).

lol, dammit, all this talk of pre-built tables has my creative juices flowing :P, now I wish I had the time/space/money to do a setup like this to house my wolves on!!

However you do it, as the lads have said above, make sure its going to be fun for both sides, and also, remember not to go over-board on the terrain features, or you'll end up with no room to move units around ;)
