Ragnar Blackmane

Pig Of Sparta

Recommended Posts

I made this model after reading the Space Wolf novels, cause i thought it'b be interesting to see ragnar as a blood claw/grey hunter, i know that the black library did a model of him fighting madox, but it never really looked like ragnar sounded in the books to me, any road, all comments/criticisms welcome as usual!

Going by what I remember off the top of my head....

Isn't it mentioned the long hair that Ragnar has... even from the begging of the novel?

No. I recently reread the first three novels. As a Blood Claw, Ragnar and the others all had the customary mohawks.

Not so sure about the sideburns though.

Either way, nice model.

Yeah...if I remember correctly, he has long flowing black hair and I believe he's clean shaven too

Nope, Ragnar is a blonde, not a brunette.....at least as far as the original Ragnar Blackmane artwork and 'Eavy Metal painting team was concerned when he was first revealed back in 2nd edition.

Ah, I even found a picture:

Yep, Ragnar originally was blonde. There were both a colored artwork and an 'eavy metal painted miniature in the Codex Space Wolves in 2nd Edition. His nickname "Blackmane" came from the black furred wolf he killed during his initiation (I believe) and whose pelt he was wearing.

In 3rd Edition that changed, whether fully on purpose or because the model painter for the 3rd Edition Codex misunderstood the whole "Blackmane" thing I don't know. Since then Ragnar has been painted with black hair and a grey pelt, instead of blonde hair and black pelt like back in 2nd Edition.

Actually, Bill King is the first to screw up Ragnar's hair color. He actually screwed up a lot of the space wolf canon. Problem is that his books were so enjoyable, we just changed the canon. So much for the integrity of the fluff!

BTW, here is my 2nd edition Ragnar. I painted it based on the 2nd edition 'eavy metal:

Given that Bill King wrote much of the background in the first place I'd place the blame with the painter of the second edition miniature. At around the same time Dark Angels changed from black to green.

I don't care about Bill King and his description, Blackmane is from the wolf Ragnar slayed which was black and Ragnar was blonde, there's no arguing that...

Back on topic, you could put some vomit brown behind the yellow on the chain sword to make a nice shading effect. <_<

As for the rest of him, I like it, and the Mohawk is really nice.

If you check out the front page of the latest version of the novels, you can see that he's got his long hair atleast from the second book and up o.O Since the pictures on the front page show parts of the story.

Also, I re-read the novels just this spring, and I seem to remember that Ragnar got to keep his black hair ... I don't remember the reason though... and I'm not sure I'm right either xD His friend Sven is described to have red hair anyway B) And a Moustache, from Novel 2 ... or 3.

Codex Space Wolves, 2nd Edition. Not only was the Eavy Metal painted Ragnar model on page 22 blonde, there was also a full color artwork of Ragnar (blonde) on page 17. One could have made the case for the Eavy Metal painter not knowing how Ragnar was supposed to look, but a color artwork?
