Heretics? By the Emperor we're Space Wolves!

Pitched battle, one objective in each deployment zone, 2500 points of Space Wolves vs. Daemonhunters:

I've got:

2 15 man Blood Blaw packs, 2 power weapons, fist, WGL with power weapon, meltagun (each)

2 10 man Grey hunter packs, plasma gun, power fist, power weapon, WGL with power weapon (each)

7 Wolf Guard Terminators with 2 assault cannons, 2 combi weapons, charms, pelts, and fists.

Wolf Priest with Frost blade, plasma pistol, WTN, runic charm, pelt, frags

Ragnar Blackmane

Rune Priest with power weapon, bolt pistol, fang and healing potions, frags, pelt

Dreadnought in drop pod, assault cannon, heavy flamer and dread CCW

6 man scout squad, 2 plasma pistols and meltagun

Leman Russ Exterminator

He had:

Inquisitor and retinue

2 armored fist squads in chimeras

3 grey knight squads on ground

1 grey knight termie squad on the ground

2 grey knight termie squads in space

1 grey knight squad in space

Grand Master in space

=TURN 1=

My objective is held by my Leman Russ and a squad of grey hunters on it. One blood claw pack with Rune Priest is screening the grey hunters going up the right (around the land raider terrain) while on the left my terminators (with Ragnar and Wolf priest) are being screened by their blood claws. My Leman Russ tries to spot the knights on the left (my left mind you) but fails. Rune priest casts storm caller, gets psychic hood blocking.

Vindicare instant kills my Rune priest with the 2 wound round. Sigh. Few things bitchier than sniper kills. Knights move up, shoot the Blood Claws on the right in half, the ones on the left take a wound or two as well.

=TURN 2=

My dreadnought drops in near the Inquisitor's retinue/objective, hiding behind his drop pod. My blood claws and grey hunters on the right move up - they're now at the level of the terrain, but not in it. On the left, Terminators and blood claws get crazy close to the Grey Knight line, and pop off a few pistol shots and assault cannon shots. Will is saving insanely well, I'm wounding poorly, but some always drop. My dreadnought flames some Grey Knight terminators, and peppers them with the assault cannon, killing none. Drop pod takes potshots at the assassin, misses. No surprises so far.

One of Will's chimeras rolls up behind my dreadnought and shoots the lascannon out the top at my rear armor. Misses. Grey knights rush into melee with my Blood Claws on the right The one on the right is something along the lines of 4 men, the left is far healthier. I think the squads came too close at deployment and I ended up with a malnourished BC pack and a slightly too big one. Too late now. These nearly dead Blood Claws fail their countercharge roll, and kill no knights whatsoever. They did more damage shooting for Jeb's sake. I've never seen more 2's and 3's for hand to hand. Right flank Blood Claws are gone, Left flank claws are peachy keen. A squad of knights drop in on the left flank by the existing knights, and on the right flank, a squad of Grey Knight terminator washouts land on the Grey Hunters. Will rolls a 6 and unfortunately they're not reduced to canned soup. Vindicare shoots at the powerfist in my Grey Hunter squad, misses.

=TURN 3=

The sun peaks over the mountain! Trumpets start blaring! The men are cheering! The scouts have arrived!

The scouts come in behind one chimera, melta and plasma in tow. Why he never pushed these towards my objective I'll never know The dreadnought hooks around his pod, ready to take on the Inquisitor. The Right flank Grey Hunters brace themselves, prepared to fight 8 grey knights and 5 terminators. The Blood Claws really didn't soften these guys up at all. Grey Hunters rapid fire the terminators, killing 3. Might of the primarch I suppose. The dreadnought flames and assault cannons the Inquisitor retinue, toasting all manners of freaks. The left flank Blood Claws rush into the grey knights, while Ragnar's terminator squad shot another squad up, with support from the Leman Russ Exterminator. The melee ends with 3 Grey knights and one blood claw with a powerfist standing. Finally, the glorious scouts make an effort towards making back their points, for the first time ever. Melta gun turns the Chimera into slag, then they assault the guardsmen who were so hastily evacuated from their box. Guardsmen don't get a punch back, and get annihilated. The dreadnought rolls a 1 and a 2 for assaulting the Inquisitor's retinue, which was about 2.02 inches into the cover.

The right flank Grey Hunters get overrun by gunfire and nemesis weapons. Ouch. Grey knights consolidate behind the wrecked landraider terrain we have, blocking line of sight. His Vindicare shoots a turbo penetrator at my dreadnought, misses. Inquisitor melta weapons knock the arm off of my dreadnought - 2 multimeltas and an inferno pistol and only weapon destroyed - I can live with that. His remaining Chimera shoots my dreadnought, missing it.

=TURN 4=

I turn my Grey Hunters and Leman Russ Exterminator towards the wrecked landraider. As soon as those knights broke cover, I'd waste em. The lascannon from my LRE takes out one knight. There are only 3 knights left on the left flank, so I figure it's safe enough for Ragnar and his boys to turn around and go back to my home objective. The scouts (in all their glory) blow up the other Chimera, and once again kill everyone on their exit. Such badasses. My dreadnought assaults the inquisitor's retinue, killing a few guys. They miss with their single daemonhammer, and take a morale test (as he wishes to fall back) and actually don't get overrun. They do, however, run off the table.

The knights break cover and run for my objective. These guys are 4 terminators and a Grand Master, and a remnant squad of knights or two. They shoot and do nothing in particular. I never even need to use the runic charms on my terminators, as they made all their saves from the GK terminators. Some other knights scattered about the table run for their own objective, where my Dreadnought is sitting around dancing on the graves of a dead inquisitor's retinue.

=TURN 5=

My Grey Hunters and Ragnar's terminator squad open up on the Grey Knights and Grey Knight terminators. The Leman Russ finishes off the Regular Knights, while the terminators are down to one man and the Grand Master. The scouts rush the Grey Knights coming to take their objective back, dropping one with a plasma pistol. They charge the Knights and die, the brave lunatics. My dreadnought kills the Vindicare assassin with his assault cannon, execution style in the back of the head.

The second Grey Knight terminator squad lands, straying towards the scouts and dreadnought. If they can't take my objective, might as well defend their own. The Grey Knights from the left flank (all 3 of them) manage to get back to their objective, holding it. The Grand Master charges Ragnar's terminator squad, still full strength, and with a Wolf Priest in tow. Ragnar and Thorgrim, the Wolf Priest, drop the Grey Knight terminator and wound the Grand Master. The master kills 4 of Ragnar's bodyguard, then his remaining two wounds are taken off by one Wolf Guard Terminator's powerfist.

We rolled for game length, and there was no 6th turn. It ended in a tie, as my Dreadnought was not close enough to bug the Grey Knights for their objective, and the Knights couldn't break my hold on my objective. If the game kept going, I definitely would have won, as he had no real anti armor to take out either the dreadnought or Leman Russ Exterminator. However, I'm happy with the game. It was a solid game that could have gone either way, but a steadfast defense got me a draw out of it.

By the end of it I was down to a dreadnought and it's drop pod, 9 Grey Hunters and their Pack Leader, Ragnar, Thorgrim, and 2 terminators. He didn't have quite as much left either, and it was a fairly close game, if a bloody one. Either way, those Inquisition folks won't be bugging my Wolves for a while!

Try us for heresy, will you? By the Emperor, we're Space Wolves!

Edit: Forgot to add in the Leman Russ into my army list up top

hello brother,

as much as killing members of the emperor's most vile inquisition warms my heart, i dont believe your scouts can assault the transportees of the chimeras they destroyed in the same turn,

if this is a 5th ed rule change i missed, i apoligize for my mistake and am happy for yoru success.

@Kieran, Yes you can now assault the disembarking members of a transport that you just blew up. I don't have the page number handy, but I know you can. Hooray for 5th edition!!

I was always wondering when I'd get to use the rule, and I'm happy to say it works wonders!

Also, those scouts have the spottiest track record you could imagine. They've popped up behind a defiler in 2 games out of 4, only to whiff every shot and get killed both times. Then the third game they came in against my friend's guard, killing a squad of guardsmen, to summarily be shot to pieces in the ensuing shooting phase. Then there was this game, of course.

So as of now their killcount is 30 guardsmen, 2 chimeras, and one grey knight. I don't know if it's just me, but there's something inherently humorous about using OBEL scouts with high strength, low AP weapons against some of the most poorly equipped troops in the game.

Great battle report, your scouts' record made me laugh. I watched another game where the scouts were like wild drunkards, nerfing every shot and then doing something awesome.

Thanks for the post! Bjorn > Inquisition =D

PS - Random question, do they still sell the models for Wolf Guard Termies? Can't find them, maybe only in blisters now?

I convert my own, using Space Wolf bitz, Chaos Marauder bitz (some nice wolf pelts in there) and of course the terminators kit.

You can still get the old ones in blisters, but I'm pretty sure they're direct order only, like all the Wolf named characters.

Thanks for the responses everybody!

I'm going to model some Cadian helmets on my scouts' bases, to show their glorious combat record!

Actually most all of the space wolves stuff is being taken off of mail order as well, the Terminators among them, so get them while you can.

The range as a whole is being pulled.

Just one more kick in the balls from Games Workshop.

Shame, really. Today I went to the GW store about 90 minutes from me and picked up a Rune priest in TDA and 2 Wolf Guard all circa 1993. I'm trying to pick this stuff up while I still can.

Shame they're pulling it... hopefully in preparation for the new figs, whenever those will be!

Also, an update on the scouts - today they killed:

10 dire avengers

6 fire dragons

1 falcon

3 dark reapers

1 autarch

Then again, the game before they killed all of 2 marines.

Legends I tell you!

first i now just what you mean with scouts, in my last four games they acted in kinda the same way. i the the first two they killed one, yes one not one squad, just one, guardsman.... then were wiped out from the return fire, the second game the kinda walk in front of a land raider crusader and didn't do any thing to it, but in the next two games they made up for it. in the third against tau, the came on the board edge popped a hammerhead, crushed a huge pack of kroot, and took down 4 battle suits, and the only lost one guy. then against daemons kinda the same thing just, they shot and killed the new mounted daemonetts (spelling?) and then preceded to wipe the floor with two greater daemons :tu: . that just got me all choked up.

second , on termis, i actually use the forge world conversion kit... pricey i know but they look really good, and i am going to be getting two more sets for a dream apoc list.
