Beer Swilling in the Great Hall

If one asumes that Spacewolves are loosely (or tightly) based on the Norse / Viking theme, why then do you all drink ale? Surely any warrior worth his weight in salted pork would be drinking mead, belived to be the nectar of the norse gods themselves?

Besides if you spend enough time on campaign wouldn't your precious beer stocks go off, as opposed to your mead that lasts nigh on forever. I welcome your thoughts.

well, i am sure the Norse drank beer as well. have you ever tried to make beer? i do, and i tried to make mead, once. real mead, not easy mead. my father did it once and did it right and it was one of the greatest drinks i had. mine though nearly the same ingredients, came out horrible. my father said wild yeast got into it, which made it taste bad. i think this is why they drink beer. not that it is easier, but because it they can repeat the same thing over and over again. plus, must people i have talked to say you never get use to mead, you get just as drunk just as fast all the time. and we don't want the poor whelps, passing out every night.''

and another thing on this: shouldn't there be some fluff on the Fangs Brew masters? i mean, i know the tech marines could probably make a good, beer, but i would think the the wolves would look all over the planet for the men, who could make the best beer. so where's our brew master.

In the mess it was Bundagerg Rum and now I am an old may it is the same drink at home, every 'digger' knows what a 'square bear' is!.

In the Boer War the OZ troops requested the entire years production be sent to the front for the troops rum rations! Every ANZAC Day we had a Gunfire Breakfast, a big mug of coffee and OP rum to wash everything down.

try making the most basic mead:

boil 3ish gallons of water and add around 2 or 2.5 pounds of honey. bring to boil again, and pour into a 7 gallon bucket. put some ice in the bucket, maybe around a frozen gallon or so. then fill the bucket to around 5 gallons with water. let it cool to room temperature, make sure it is securely sealed and closed! then add yeast, i forget what type right now, but i am sure you can find out. let sit for a week or two and then you get mead. as long as it was good and sealed, it should taste good. if not that is how it tastes bad.

That's why I like living in Idaho: There's a small winery up north that makes (relatively) low ABV mead that's nicely affordable. Camas Prairie Winery sells mead for about $10 (US) a bottle.

 

Yes, they will ship (if you're over 21, apologies to those living in countries with a different drinking age), but it's a Fax order only at the moment.

 

Back to the original theory, I think that there may be a few battle brothers that also get in some brewing. Just personal experience, mind you, but I can see some Wolves setting up portable brewing operations for field deployments. Yes, you still need that herb to make Fenrisian Ale, but ale spoils over time!

It should be noted that while the modern words "beer" and "ale" are today almost interchangeable, there is good evidence that shows that the two drinks were very different in early Northern Europe. It is clear from Old English and Old Norse sources that ale (Old English ealu, Old Norse öl) was produced from malted grain.

I'm sorry but you must be drinking the wrong stuff. If you drink piss water, expect it to taste bad.

 

My more favorable type (a Maibock for example) has so much more flavor and body than anything from a large American brewing company. (though sam adams isn't too bad).

 

Back onto topic. I think GW did mess up, it wouldn't be the first time they've gotten some sort of fluff wrong, and lets face it, they've messed up much more important fluff than this. Don't get me wrong, beer is important (it's Lebensmittel afterall). :tu:

agreed. only your cultured drinkers will know the difference between ale, beer, grog, mead, and the dozens of malt whiskey, malt liquer etc etc.

Normally yes, but then again how could they taste test to ensure quality? They take a gulp of Wolfsmead and they're stone dead in seconds. Only a Marine can prepare the booze of the Space Wolves!
