The Pre-Heresy Iron Warriors were part of the Great Crusade and, like every marine legion at that time were loyal to the emperor and battled across the galaxy. The only time things changed is during the Horus Heresy when things went awry and half the marine legions including the Iron Warriors sold their souls to chaos and turned on the Emperor. Pre-Heresy Iron Warriors are simply the same as modern astartes, except siege specialists and, obviously, a much larger organisation than modern chapters.
