Inquisitorial Factions: Now with an Inquisitorial Census

Grand Master Tyrak

Recommended Posts

Following a recent bout of tongue-in-cheek inter-factional tensions in another thread between myself and Inquisitor NicolePyykkonen, I've been wondering:

What factions are other B&C member affiliated with?

I'll provide an "idiots guide" to the factions - obviously they are a lot more complex than what is stated here.

The major ones are:

Puritan

Thorian - Believe that the body on the Golden Throne is no longer the Emperor, he has ascended to godhood. His power is instilled in certain Divine Avatars, exceptional mortals such as Sebastian Thor. The Thorians believe through these Avatars the Emperor takes a direct hand in the course of history, and are constantly searching for an Avatar that could be used to permanently resurrect the Emperor.

Amalathian - Take their name from the Mount Amalath conclave where the tenets of this philosophy were first set down. They believe the Emperor has a grand plan and that it should be allowed to unfold as he has decreed - those who claim to know the will of the Emperor are guilty of colossal arrogance. They are concerned with maintaining the status quo and react vehemently against change. They are more concerned than most with maintaining harmony between the Imperial organisations, through the creed of strength through unity. Good relations with groups such as the Arbites.

Monodominants - The salvation of the Imperium can only be achieved through complete destruction of the non-loyal, non-human elements in the galaxy. Intolerant of any kind of deviation from Imperial Law, and believe there is no excuse for any type of heresy. Use Exterminatus more commonly than any other faction.

Radical

Xanthites - The powers of Chaos and the warp can be used to ensure the salvation of the Imperium without causing spiritual corruption. Chaos is a reflection of mankind and so can never be truly defeated, but can be turned against itself.

Recongregators - Seek to destabilise the Imperium and its institutions in order to build it anew. If the Imperium is allowed to continue as it is, it will stagnate, corrode and ultimately be destroyed, so desire change, albeit subtly. Chiefly opposed by the Amalathians, who hold the opposite viewpoint.

Horusians - Even more radical strand of the Xanthites. Believe that another individual such as Horus could be created and used to unify Mankind for the better, rather than enslaving it to Chaos as per the HH.

Isstvanians - Mankind can only be strengthened through adversity and will only becomes strong in times of turmoil. They see the HH, in particular the events at Isstvaan III as evidence of this. They are keen to propogate war and encourage it, in the belief that Mankind will find strength from it.

Or, more interestingly, are you not affiliated with any of these and instead pursue an Inquisitorial philosophy of your own making?

For those who don't know, these are not restricted to particular Ordos, nor are they part of the Ordo structure within the Inquisition. They are philosophical standpoints within the ranks of the Inquisitors.

I'll start by saying I have both power-armoured feet (Being Malleus has its privileges. ) planted firmly in the Amalathian camp.

Where does everyone else stand?

I'm a Thorian, but with heretical tendencies (according to the official precepts of the Imperial Religion that is). My Inquisitor (and the army associated with him) tends to see the Emperor as a prophet or an avatar rather than an actual divinity in his own right. He is also a firm believer in the "turn of the golden throne to allow an imperial reboot" school, which might get him in trouble with some people. Finally, he tends to think that the Warp is not all chaos and nastiness, since it is only the nasty, stormy, in turmoil parts that power the chaos "gods," no? Calm areas in the warp if they can be found should be safe to use.

Amalthean without the desire to enforce status quo. I believe that the stopping of technological process and advancement is one of the works of man, not the Emperor, and it is arrogant to believe that we should be holding mankind back "for its own good."

The Imperium went to war with space marine legions, not dinky little chapters. Skimmers were prevalent in all the armed forces, land raiders weren't restricted to the marines, and numerous other weapons and systems have since been "forgotten".

ALL of the Imperial Cults, and ALL of the bureaucracies are the work of men, fouled up by the work of men, for 10,000 years and that decay is why the Imperium is failing. Adeptus Mechanicus, Ecclesiarchy, Arbites, and even the (rest of the) Inquisition are all part of the problem.

Chaos and Xenos must be held at bay, subjucated, or destroyed without mercy, however, so the radical viewpoints have no place in the universe.

Some good responses so far.

I am going to say that if you are a "X Philosophy without this bit", that comes under your own philosophy and I'll ask for more detailed info on how that works as a whole. Picking and mixing bits from different philosophies makes it your own philosophy, and some explanation on how it works in the big picture would be nice. ;)

Feel free to debate the pros and cons of the philosophies, particularly if its one that is opposed to your own.

I actually kind of agree with that version of it, as much as the knights like to be buried beneath the emperor it's the imperium not the knights that keep him there... Funny how a world so full of death is filled with a culture of mankind that isn't willing to let something die.

Ha, this is totally awesome ;D

I am quite firmly planted in the Thorian camp.

Inquisitor Nicole Pyykkönen is primarily affiliated with the Ordo Hereticus, with some ties to Malleus. She differs slighty in being a powerful psyker herself which some puritanical forces would hold against her, however thus far she has a strong record of opposing heretical psykers and witches on the battlefield, most recently in assisting the Mordant 13th with her allied forces (Sisters of the Sacred Rose, Grey Knights, Space Marines of the Blood Ravens chapter, and the Cadian 84th) in their campaign in the Scarus sector.

She is Cadian by birth, she and her brother (Kit Pyykkönen, Colonel of the Cadian 84th) were orphans raised in the Schola Progenium. Being exposed to a higher than normal amount of psykers by being on Cadia she is relatively more tolerant than many of psychic potential (providing they are trained and evaluated.. rogue psykers are a risk that cannot be allowed to exist), however she is quite firmly anti-daemon and daemonic weapons of chaos must be destroyed without exception when they are encountered. During her training after the Black Crusade against Cadia and her activites within the Scarus sector she has gained a lot of experience battling the forces of Chaos and strengthened her ties with the Ordo Malleus while fighting Chaos psykers and their daemonic allies.

Otherwise the general Thorian information describes the vast majority of her viewpoints :wallbash:

Hmm, I've never thought about this too much.

I guess my Inquisitor Lord Black would most certainly be a Xanthites. Although by the storyline we had in our last campaign, he was executed on the field of battle by Canoness Okura. He lead an army of traitors against the Imperial forces, and was trying to use a summoning alter of the dark gods of chaos. Needless to say, now that he is "dead", he lives on in the warp with the help of some entity. He's one of those neat little campaign characters made using the rogue psyker rules in the back of the Witch Hunter codex.

My other Inquisitor is also a psyker, she is basically a Demon hunter - Witch hunter liaison. Tied to both, but as to how she sees the Golden Throne, and the Imperium as a whole has never been questioned. She basically does everything in her power to secure and protect her friends that she has made in her career. I'll have to put some thought into it.

Yeah, that came to my attention earlier. Inquisitor Tyrak still considers Thorians to be Radicals.

(Before anyone asks GK Grand Master Tyrak, my previous army leader, was eaten by Nurglings. I just can't change my B&C name.)

.. and it couldn't have happened to a more deserving Amalathian! Calling me a radical... *scoffs*

Thankfully I've yet to have something non-recoverable happen to Inquisitor Pyykkönen *knocks on wood* her Chiurgeons have been doing a good job of keeping her alive and there haven't been any career ending insta-gibs thus far. I may have to consider giving her bionics eventually though.

It's very interesting seeing everyone elses views expressed on here.. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that considers IC Backstory in my army fluff ;)

Me, I'm somewhere around Thorian and Amalathian, or simply quite undecided.

I believe my WH Damin Vandraed is an Amalathian, but no rabid enforcer. Kyrie, when she becomes one, will probably be Thorian.

I've read a lot of old (OLD) things, and am rather amused (in a good way) by the whole Illuminati/Star Child/Thorian thingie, but I'm not entiiirely sure about it... ;)

I love the Star Child/Illuminati stuff... it's just more evidence that we Thorians are the only branch of the Inquisition on the right track *grins*

Er, if you meant the GK Grand Master, they don't get involved in factionalism. Inquisitor Tyrak, the Amalathian, is alive and kicking.

I did create an Inquisitorial philosophy once, actually - that of the Merusians. It might prove interesting to some of you Inquisitorial fluff-nuts.

I like the Merusians. At least in the sense that its very good work and fits right in with the 40k universe. In the sense of Inquisitorial philosophy I'd rather purge every Merusian I come across. :P

Oh, right... my mistake :P The Grand Master would definately be mourned, as a loyal servant of the Imperium.

I agree.. it's very good work and artwork! May their heretical souls however, burn in the fire of the Emperor's wrath ;)

Monodominant. Through re-expansion and consolidation, humanity will solidify it's destiny as the bringer of light in a universe of darkness. ( I also secretly sympathise with the Istvanians). Chaos, and the more immediate Xenos threats (Orks, Tyrannids, Necrons) must be rooted out of Imperial space. Then the reconquered space must strengthened against further incursion.
