Hey guys ive recently returned to 40k after an abscence of a couple of years and after looking over the new codex (and re-read storm of iron) I knew that I needed to start where I left off, with Iron Warriors! Ive come up with a list that I intend to be able to take on all armies with to a greater or lesser extent, have tried to keep it fluffy, balanced and fun to play. Was wondering if you guys could put your experience together and have a look over to see were I may have gone wrong in any major may. Also although not entirely fluffy I have used marks other than undivided as to ignore the benefit of them would be a bit of a disadvantage. I was thinking, say for example that nurgle and tzzentch could be bionics/energy sheilds and that this would keep in with the iron warrios fluff but not limit me, is this seen as an ok thing by most gamers?

Chaos Lord - pair of lc, termie armour, mon. p150

4 termies - x3 combi flamer, x1 heavy flamer, p fist, c fist, ION p 215

2 x 9 CSM - asp champ p fist, flamer, lascannon (one has missle launcher), rhino, IOT p 265/275

6 Raptors - x2 meltaguns, IOCG p 150

2 Obliterators P150

Defiler - close combat arm. p 150

Vindicator- daemonic possesion. p145

Total: 1495 ish

Welcome back brother, IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT!

I was thinking, say for example that nurgle and tzzentch could be bionics/energy sheilds and that this would keep in with the iron warrios fluff but not limit me, is this seen as an ok thing by most gamers?

No problem at all as long as you explain clearly what's what before the match. I use thousand sons rules to represent robotic marines crafted by my company's Technomancer, but I still use thousand sons heads so nobody can be confused over what they are so think about painting some rust on to your MoN guys to represent the corrupting influence of chaos bio-enhancements.

Chaos Lord - pair of lc, termie armour, mon. p150

4 termies - x3 combi flamer, x1 heavy flamer, p fist, c fist, ION p 215

These guys are solid as long as you keep them together.

2 x 9 CSM - asp champ p fist, flamer, lascannon (one has missle launcher), rhino, IOT p 265/275

You need 10 in a unit if you want to take more then one weapon upgrade. IoT is a bit of a waste if they're in a rhino. No point in having two forms of fire-power protection.

6 Raptors - x2 meltaguns, IOCG p 150

Raptors are hit and miss. Excellent if you manage to get up close and personal with a Land Raider but if you're caught in the open by a Leman Russ or a squad of fortuned Dark Reapers you'll wish you hadn't spent so much on 1 wound, armour 3 models

2 Obliterators P150

Defiler - close combat arm. p 150

Vindicator- daemonic possesion. p145

Total: 1495 ish

These are both fluffy and effective choices for an Iron Warriors force. One question, with the Defiler which weapon did you take away to give him the extra cc arm? The heavy flamer or the reaper cannon?

Overall I would ditch the Raptors and buy a Land Raider transport for your termies and lord. I would also ditch the IoT on your normal troups and spend the difference on those two extra marines you need and some Icons of Chaos Glory. Also if they're riding in Rhinos dual special weapons are better then one heavy one special. Other then that it's solid.

a flying lord would probably serve you better i'm probably the biggest advocate for using lesser used units from the codex but i still can't find a place for a termie lord unless it's Abaddon.

drop the heavy weapons from your csm squads and add either another flamer or a meltagun as these units should be as mobile as possible. i'm also not a huge fan of the IoT if it's used to obtain a +5 save, i see it as a way to increase the invuln save of units that aready have one ( terminators, Lords/princes, possessed).

i prefer to always choose 1 troop choice for every 500 points of my army list it's usually a good rule of thumb, even if you use cheap LSDs as objective grabbers.

your termie squad looks ok but i'd probably lose the powerfist and the MoN ( unless thats there for fluff reasons) and replace the flamers for meltas or are you playing against alot of horde armies?

Need 10 models in a troop chaos space marine unit to give them a second special or a heavy weapon.

I would say, drop the expencive icon of nurgle from the terminators until you make them 7 or more models in the unit. Paying for almost 2 terminators negates the -1 modifier for wound rolls on just 4 models. (4x1/6 is 4/6 = thats 2/3rds of ONE model your paying almost 2 models worth for!!!)

Heavy flamer is very worthwhile, even when deep striking (termicide), but often you wont get to use all 4 flames in one game or even one volley at times! So mix up the weapons, I suggest trading two combi-flamers for combi-meltas.

The raptors, with the spare points I would advize beefing them a little.

The lightening claws on your lord are nice, perhaps deadlier with his initiative with the mark of khorne? Its like having a master-crafted weapon, that +1 attack I mean..

Rhinos are awesome, and can be a wall if you want to run your models forward. However IOT are not so nice if you dont make use of it. They arent a prime melee unit, and I would highly reccomend that you try out different icons. Your terminators will take the anti tank firepower most likely, and an offensive icon would suit them better. (You want the flame-terminators in front or deep striking right? that means your INV save troops wont be ahead of them to offer 4+ cover saves to the terminators that would be behind them)

Consider the cover saves units give eachother and the range of the weapons involved when considering roles and icons that suit those roles.

Good luck! (Remember, an icon of khorne could mean +1 attack for the powerfist champions!)
Games are restricted by rules. People who know the rules well know the game well. If knowing the rules and their interaction with eachother makes me a rules lawyer, what does that make the non-rules lawyer?
If I refuse to play when I can play when challenged, then I'm telling the challenger that my army and my generalship is inferior to theirs.
If liking horror and romance makes me an emo, then is shakespear emo?

You can tell I'm bored...

Neither MoN or termi armor is good on lord IMO.
IoN in a 4 man squad is 10 pts per, definately no worth it.
need 10 men in csm squad to take 2 weops (or do you mean 9 + champ making 10 ?), either way use only special weops in csm squads (no hvy weops (yea, even for IW's)).
IoTz way too expensive, and really doesn't do much.
I would drop a raptor; 5 man , 2 melta. But really 3 man termicide squad is just as good, if not better for burning tanks and at fewer pts.
All your HS choices are good.

Thanks guys that was some good advice  quick question, if i ditched the raptors and got a land raider for my termies does it take up a heavy support slot or do attached vehicles count as free, im guesing they dont as that would be awsome. Also if ion nurgle is bad for termies what mark do you suggest works best?

Gave the defiler an extra arm in place of the flamer dav. Figured that i have a few already and if the cannon goes I can fleet it forward and use it to tear units up!

P.S. -sorry for posting in the wrond section :P

A LR bought for termi's do not use a HS slot, they are a dedicated vehicle and take up the same slot as the termi squad (elite).
I think a LR for your termi's is a good idea. Since your termi's have a LR and will (hopefully) be getting the charge in often, IoK would prob. be best.
Whether it's better to lose the reaper or the hvy flamer to get that 2nd DCCW is debatable.

Ok so here is my new list.

Lord - same as before, may try out the mok, just to see which i prefer.

Termies- now with iok, keeping the flamers cos I have a purpose for them.

2 x 10 csm- with iocg and a flamer and meltagun for versatility.

2 oblits

defiler

vindicator

and a land raider for my lord and termies

though i do now feel like i havent enough troops, possibly bring out the raptors for certain games and make them bigger and more tooled up for cc.
