Returning to the hobby after 10 years

I'd like to see the pics of what you finish up for this.

I'd be glad to post them :tu:

this thread is giving me a lovely incentive to keep the momentum going.

i know the table itself wont be anything special, just textured board, but hopefully the bits i knock up for it will lift it a little.

tonight was about building, i've assembled 5 of the assault squad including 1 small conversion.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4027.jpg

it always seemd slightly daft to me that an assault member would charge into battle with an explosive liqhuid on the side the enemy would be shooting at the most, so as he's an assault trooper, i've put his chemical tank in a slightly safer place :)

lastly from tonights build. i was looking for a librarian, and i prettly much decided i didnt like the available models very much, so i decided to bitz one together, he he is so far. bear in mind hes VERY WIP and missing well, most of himself :)

thanks for visiting everyone, and as always CnC very welcome.

It's an old guitar string ;)

the bottom (musically) three strings of an acoustic metal stringged guitar are a wire core with the wrappings you see already on, and once bent into place they pretty much hold thier shape.

only if i strum him ;)

i get my stuff from here -

http://www.artsuppliesuk.co.uk/index.php/cPath/114_115

it's not cheap but when you consider what we pay GW, and how much use we get out of our terrain, i can live with it.

oh yeah those are 2" but i normally use 1" i just wanted some gargantuan features ;)

one they are painted i'll put a geezer on it for scale

i teach computer game design at a college in the uk,

Whoa, same here.

What college are you at?

Loads of my students do Warhammer or 40k too. Not that that's a surprise really. I think its really good for computer game students to play tabletop wargames. Since all the mechanics are visible (unlike a video game where you can't get any insight as to what's running behind the scenes) they can get a good idea of how stats and probablity can be used to represent real life actions.

Back on topic- great job on the marines and the terrain. The Mentors especially look like they mean business.

@ThomKovacs Hi mate, yeah the pack still fits really comfortably. - a normal marine pack wouldnt i dont think, but with the jp's being so high on the body theres loads of clearance.

@tortoise aha, i knew thered be more of us out here :P I'm at Sutton coldfield colledge in birmingham, and i absolutely agree with what youve said, in fact the abiklity to use this stuff as enrichment for the reasons you describe was a big influence on me getting back into this, as i realised how much it taught ME about game systems. thanks also for your positive comments :P what college are you at?

further update, later last night i built a couple of objectives, i'll finish these off and post when i get back home later.

well, all of it really. mostly the 2d stuff as its where most of my knowledge is, and it's the main skills gap we have on the course.

i'm delivering the following units this year - concept art, 2d digital artmowrk, 3d modelling, human interface devices, flash for computer games, and bits of lots of others. we've got about 106 students across two years and looking at HND for next year.

i'd be interested to know what software packages you teach on? we use photoshgop and max/maya mostly

This only works on the US side of the pond as we use a lot of brcks here (UK), and dont use the same cavity wall fillings, the underfloor stuff used here all also expanded rather than extruded and much cruder to work with unfortunately.

you can find it very occasionally, but nothing like the prevalance stateside

the 30quid sheet thats 60cm by 1.2 metres was more than enough fopr the gigantic hills you saw, and iot's still cheaper than GW terrain <_<

Lots of posts with no pictures... lets fix that

Librarian has reached the "blu-tak" stage, so comments on pose / gear would be appreciated

i've some GSing to do once i'm happy with the bits, most promenantly some etching work on the force axe and a holster for his plasma pistol. i wanted the plasma more toward the front of the model but i like where his arms are i think, and theres no room

anyway, have at him

I personally teach photoshop and corel painter. Corel Painter really is excellent for concept art.

Your librarian's pose is very good. The book looks wicked.

Hi Brother Duncs, can i qualify, do you mean move the whole arm in? or rotate the hand? so that he's showing the book off more? or clutching it to himself more?

comments very much appreciated.

personally i like him much more in the first picture than the last one, which is odd since the pose didnt change at all :)

also, airbrushed hills for your perusal. green looks much brihgter in pics than life.

tac sergeant for scale

(hi again tortoise :) simulpost. we have a few machines with painter, but i've found a lot of our students cant get thier heads round it, and i out it down to a lack of experience with real paint. a lot of the principples of which are straight away applicable in painter, but they just dont get :P )

Yeah just the hand just so it looks like he's clutching it a bit more. I don't know what it is but in the last pic it just looks a little unusual. I think it might be that the angle he's holding it at makes it look more like a notebook.. But that's a personal preference. Like I said kudos on the model in general. And those hills are big Ideal for artillery spotters. :)

The Librarian looks awesome, I love the head details. I would tilt the book slightly inwards so it looks like it's being held at a more natural angle, it's currantly a bit stiff (hold a book in a relaxed posistion while looking in a mirror, you'll see the way you naturally angle things towards the body due to the slight angle created at the elbow) otherwise great looking mini so far.

IT was the thumb. it's gone now ;)

i'll GS one in, and probarbly rotate the hand some to. many thanks for the comments guys the final model will be the better for them.

tonight has been about the large and the small.

in the small category, i've gsed a holster on that plasma pistol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4047.jpg

and put the straps in place to receive it once it's cured

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4048.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4049.jpg

i also spent some time putting a few extra detail lines on the axe. these will get filed down to small ridges once cured

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4050.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4051.jpg

now, on to larger things

i put a coat of black on the statue objective marker i'm cobbling together

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4053.jpg

and i've put together an ammo dump objective

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4052.jpg

once those were done i broke out the hot glue gun and set to work on that forest i've promised myself. each pic represents an individually placable peice

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4054.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4055.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4056.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4057.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4058.jpg

and here they are all together

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4059.jpg

and with the inevitable tac sergeant for scale :jaw:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4060.jpg

theyll get some sand/ballst tomorrow and a coat of black hopefully have them finished this weekend. leaving the fuel tank objective (still dunno what to use for the tank) the ruined building and a few craters.

so not a lot then :~

EDIT - last update today i promise.

I think the book is better positioned now. ive got some tidying up to do in the sides of the holster, but i'll get that when i do the "tooling" on it, i've raised the axe this time, and i'm no longer sure which i prefer.

i'll look afresh in the morining :P

Yeah thats much better. I like it alot, must have been the angle of the book. Great GS to. Particularly the purity seals and the holster, they just seem to stand out for me. As for the scenery well it's coming along nicely I look forward to seeing that statue painted up.

Thanks guys. the pointer were really useful in improving the mini :) and your positive comments are always nice to hear :)

yeah churning out terrain is something i really enjoy if i'm honest. i love the "model- making" part, as sometimes with GW figs you tend to feel liek youre just putting them together. i think thats why i try to convert at least 1 or 2 guys in every unit.

Still building here, making my way through the list, then going to have a mass flocking session, followed by a mass painting session, then i can finish the last few amrines of my battleforce and get started on the AoBR orks as an opfor.

I had hit a brick wall with my idea for a "fuel dump" as i couldnt for the life of me craft or find antyhing that was the "right" shape in my mind to make an imperial fuel depot.

then i realised i woz doin' it all wrong.

i'm going to be developing two forces side by side, so some of the objectives should be thiers.. so i give to you me very very WiP orky gojuice depot.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4066.jpg

lots more to do to it, but i'm quite pleased so far.

i'm not sure it's allowed to post here, but it's terrain so i figured i'd get away with it :)

(btw can any others who "play both sides" recommend a good orky forum as i'm going to be starting them in the next week or so)

a few craters were this evenings other offering, no pics yet tho.

i've also today slapped the first coat of paint on the boards, but it needs darkening, and some texture, so i'll wait and snap those when theya re done, as images of painted boards arent exactly exciting :)

So, an update.

the boards are painted and textured, just need some drybrushing now, which i hope to do tomorrow, i've built another orky building :P and sorted out a few craters, those have to go on the terrain painting pile along with the trees from the other day. i'll try and have a mass terrain painting session in the next day or two.

the 550 pt marine force is nearly done, i've just got a Razorback to knock together, which is tomorrow's job, after that it's all about the orks so you wont see my updating for a few days. but as promised when i put the board together for the game i'll take snaps a-plenty ;)

the last troops for the marine force were finished today, and i present them for your perusal :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Karitas/DSC_4077.jpg

EDIT:

here's that other orky building. idea being it's a ruin that they've "inhabited"

lots still to do to it, mainly bitz box raiding, and obviously paint :)
