Space Wolves - how do you paint yours?

Evening gents (or should I say hairy, ale guzzling, steak munching heroes of the Imperium!),

I've decided to jump on the bandwagon before it starts rolling with a Space Wolves army.

Obviously as a cowardly Tau player, it's time for a big change as I swap retreating and firing for charging and waving power weapons about :)

The biggest problem I have is what kind of grey to paint my Space Wolves.

Lots of people seem to do it lots of different ways. I just wondered what colours you guys are using?

Also, as Games Workshop is moving way from the bright and happy colours of 2nd edition and going for drab, military realism with more of their ranges, I'm not sure if the Space Wolves are going to be Shadow Grey, Space Wolves Grey or just a dark, neutral grey, more like their Heresy era colours in all the new Horus Heresy art.

So do you think they're gonna stay bluey-grey or became dark grey?

Of course, this all effects how I'm gonna paint my army (in advance) for the new codex in September.

I'm using Shadow grey, currently debating whether or not to add a space wolf grey highlight/drybrush like my tanks.

But I think you might be right with a tone down on the color front. But as always there your Wolves do what you feel works for you.

I know you've seen my Wolves before, but here's a pic to refresh your memory.

I used Vallejo model colors dark sea grey, with med sea grey mixed in for highlighting.

That said I imagine GW will stick with the current color scheme. Although I'll be happy if they change it back to a proper grey.

yeah, his Grey Hunter looks so damn good.

I think it's the neutral grey and the earthy brown holster that makes it work.

Similar colours to the Blood Claw on the current Space Wolves codex cover.

I just went with the Ol' Grey metal look myself

codex grey, badab black wash, codex grey again as a base highlight, then fortress grey, and skull white.

Hope that helps

For my Wolves I am going for a darker color scheme. The main armor is a 3:2 SW Grey:Shadow Grey mix washed with Asurman Blue with the 'alternate' color of Blood Red. For weapon casings I use straight Shadow Grey, brass for the iconography and mostly boltgun for the metallics.

i use a basecoat of 4:2:1 Adeptus battlegrey-regal blue-chaos black and then wash with brown and black inks/washes... i then add fortress grey into the mix to highlight comes out kinda like this...

on future models i'm gonna add more fortress grey to create a stronger contrast but hey...

Still learning to paint but I borrowed littlbitz recipe.....

1. 50/50 choas black shadow grey base coat (not littlbitz)

2. Shadow grey

3. Highlight 1 is 1part SW grey to 2 parts shadow

4. Highlight 2 is 1 to 1 SW and shadow

5. Highlight 3 is 1part shadow to 2 parts sw grey

6. Skull white on extreme edges

I use Shadow Grey as the base, lightly highlighted with a 50/50 mix of Shadow Grey and Skull White, comes out like this:

I'm rather pleased with the result, while the regular grey look is nice too, it reminds me more of Space Sharks or something and I personally prefere the Shadow Grey or at times a really dark grey also works for 13th Company and Pre-Heresy armies.

I used Shadow Grey, watered down Black Ink, Codex Grey highlights on my old army(that was stolen and I hope the thief chokes %$#@&^*s!!!) Anyway, I plan to use the same scheme again for the new army, once I finish these praetorians.

i dont have the link right handy but if you check out DV8's tutorial for his space wolves i would HIGHLY recommend it. I am by no means a painter at all and I used his pretty simple (i thought) tutorial and my first squad is the best i've ever done in 7 or 8 years. Roughly it's codex grey then fortress grey then a purple tint (thin wash) all over then a blue wash (thinned a bit) in the joints/recesses and then a thinned down layer of codex grey followed by a thin highlight layer of fortress grey. there's a lot more for the details on the models but you should check it out, his work is jaw-dropping

Here's an example of mine.. camera's making it a bit too bright, although my codex grey+fortress grey+ highlights makes it kinda light to begin with.

I generally base them with shadow grey then dry brush them with space wolves grey. Do the other detailing however you want. Once i get done with my bazillion point space wolves army, i'll probably post some pics as well.

A technique I learned form my local GW manager (he's a good fella)

Basecoat Black/White (your choise, I use black for recesses, but white could make it lighter)

Astronomican grey- single layer

Asurmen Blue wash

A 50-50 mix SW grey and Shadow grey- Drybrushed on top

SW grey highlights if you want

Shoulderpads- Iyanden Darksun- 2 coats

Any highlights you want, Ive not bothered with them. I like Iyanden darksun as is

One day I'll wrap my brain around how to take pictures and get them onto my computer so I can show people, but I just run with two coats of 50/50 shadow/space wolves grey, Iyanden Darksun anything yellow, and Dwarf Bronze anything I can. If it's a skull motif, it gets bronzed. Wolf icon? Bronze. Aquila? Bronze. I even bronzed the odd occasional banner so I'd not need to write anything on it. Purity seals get a single coat of Astronomicon Grey then as many coats of skull white as it takes to get a solid color. Then some scribbles in black. For reds, I undercoat with Astronomicon Grey, then hit it with Privateer Press's Khador Red Base. It covers better than other ranges, or so I've found.

All this over a black primer. Accept no substitutes. Touch up any errant brush strokes with chaos black.

For basing, I hate flock with a passion, so I sprung for some resin fractal bases. I'm still figuring out how they're working out (had my second based model break off his base last night), but they're spiffy looking. Painted them with a 3:2 mix of Skull White and Falcon Turquoise, followed by a liberal drybrush of white to simulate ice. Might still have to add some flock, but it looks decent.

What i do is prime the model in black, then go over the armour in a 1:1 mix of Chaos Black and Shadow Grey, then i go over the armour again in Shadow Grey. Following that i give it a wash with asurmen blue followed with a dry brush of Shadow Grey. For highlights just use a 1:1 mix of Shadow Grey and Space Wolf Grey, and if you want you can go over again with pure space wolf grey for the sharper edges.

Oh and about this fenris grey foundation..... how is it? is it the same exact color as shadow grey? and i wont have to basecoat the armour with the mix of cb and sg to get a good color, right?
