Space Wolves - how do you paint yours?

While my painting skills are not at the same level of many others here, here is a picture of how two of my Wolves are turning out

I really like how the pose of the right Wolf turned out. :-)

I've not tried the Fenris Grey foundation, but the other foundations cover well enough. 1-2 coats for a clean solid color as opposed to the normal 3-4.

Might pick up a pot of it the next time I'm paint shopping.

I've gone Coat d'arms shadow grey (its more grey than GW's shadow grey) followed by a wash with devlan mud in the recesses and then highlighted up by adding space wolf grey. Looks kinda like this:

My new wolf army for the new codex with be a grey grey, pre heresy style.

I don't have any picture of my minis at hand, but here is how i do it:

1. Base Coat in Black

2. Fenris Grey foundation

3. Drybrush with Fenris grey/white 50/50 mix

4. Secondary colour bleached Bone (for insignias on the chest and the like)

5. Black ink

6. Drybrush again with Fenris Grey/White and bleached bone on the respective parts

7. Details (shoulder pads, pelts, weapons, faces...)

8. Drybrush details (in case of weapons and pelts at least)

The result is a really dirty look. I like my wolves to look as if they have been out hunting for a couple of months.

I know that fenris grey does not need a black base coat basically, but there are some parts that i don't over-paint with FG, like the joints of the Armor or shoulder pads and weapons and every part that I intend to be in a metal colour. I find it hard to paint especially the joints one by one, so i just do it this way. Ant metal colours seem to look better on black than on FG.

For a straight-out-of-the-Codex look, it's:

Prime black

Shadow Grey base

Badab Black wash

line highlight 60/40 Shadow and SW Grey

Chest eagles/running wolves/skulls/etc black, then Shining gold

careful Gryphonne Sepia wash (or Chestnut Ink, if you have it)

extreme highlight Mithril Silver

Bolters black with Codex Grey line highlights, barrels and sights in Boltgun Metal

My own Hounds of Arawn are painted entirely differently, but you're asking (it seems) about "by-the-book."

I've made a right pig's ear of my whirlwind. Take a Look.

Probably not the best test model I must admit.

Thank god I got it off a friend in exchange for a pint down the pub.

I need to sit down and take my time with this army and paint all the models beautifully.

Aaaah! Don't have the time!! Want to....hrrrgh...play game....rend and kill -NOW!

I am no master painter but for mine I use the recipe (mostly) from 'How to paint Space Marines'. Based on Shadow Grey with 60/40 Chaos Black/Shadow Grey shade and progressively more Space Wolf Grey added to Shadow Grey for the highlighting until you are using pure Space Wolf Grey then for the extreme points add a dash of white to the SWG. The shoulder pads are base coated Vomit Brown and worked up to pure Golden Yellow, then adding a touch of Skull White for the extreme highlights

Also works well on vehicles but with a bit more of a dry brushing

Works well for me but I might try some of the styles mentioned by others for some individual character models to help them stand out - not sure yet

I paint my wolves as follows

1. Prime with black

2. Undercoat with thinned down Space Wolf Grey

3. Put down another coat of thinned down Space Wolf Grey (2 coats is usually all i need for most rank-and-file troops, but for vehicles and characters ill do 3 or 4 layers of slightly more thinned down paint for a smoother look.)

4. Lay some thinned down Shadow Grey as all of the shadows and highlights. Super thin in multiple layers to get a fading effect.

5. Clean up any excess shadow grey with thinned down Space Wolf Grey

5. If the Highlight is on a strong edge, I'll put a razor thin line of Skull White on top of the shadow grey.

PICS!

I use the recipe mentioned above by Lord Rags, but for my Initial coat I use Fenris Grey Foundation paint.

It is a bit darker than Shadow Grey, and has good one coat coverage ability.

I use black primer then Codex grey on the troops. Any that I want to stand out I use a highlight of Fortress grey. It is pretty simple and it makes the shoulderpad colors and wolf pelts and tails (which I do in varying shades of brown) really stand out.

If you go that route though get ready to hear a lot of "Oh wow, I didn't know you could use bare plastic as a base color".

I know, I know...a lot of lenses aren't painted, but I'm lazy like that. This was my first army, but I still like the look of shadow grey drybrushed with space wolves grey. I usually wash them with badab black afterward now. Man I hate how bad my old basing was.

I'm really just a table top quality painter, but I use a simple recipe of Shadow Grey with a base highlight of 50/50 shadow and space wolf greys and a final highlight of Space Wolf Grey.

I'm not entirely pleased with the result, but it matches the models I painted 15-20 years ago. With the new codex, I'm thinking of starting over. In that case, I'll steal the scheme from either Megalodon or Zsoulsess. On this site, they're my favorite.

  • 3 weeks later...

well i've started painting my wolves few days ago - at the beginnig i 've started with some wolf guard. I hope to take some pictures soon to show you how they look.

I don't paint them shadow grey i wanted to stick to the pre-heresy look and more darker feel.

I undercoat mine with mix 50/50 chaos black and codex grey. Next:

2. codex grey

3. 50/50 codex grey and fortress grey

4. first highlight (only edges) fortress grey

5. second highlight space wolves grey

6. then applied wash with shadow grey - very thinned down

7. 50/50 wash black ink and chaos black - very thinned down but not applied on the whole miniature but in the very recesses and the parts of the armour that may be in shadow

8. final highlight with skull white

i am happy with the final result. I try to attach pictures soon.

I use black spray undercoat, fenris grey base coat, then work up with shadow grey and space wolves grey to a final hardedge highlight in neat space wolves grey.

I'm hoping that as the stormy sky colour scheme is tied in name to teh SW chapter that we stay at least partly blue/grey in colour rather than going the standard imperial guard codex grey colour with the new codex.
