Space Wolves - how do you paint yours?

I went with Grey + yellow and blue for details on my previous, 15 years in the making-wolf army.. but when the new guys gopt released.. I elt like updating both my style and my choice of colours. My first new wolf is soon finished, he's a lot darker than the rest, with red and black taking the yellow and blues place...

I must say.. I really like how this is turning out.. how pre-heresy and viking gritty the new color scheme looks.

I'll post hiom here later, when he's done :(

  • 2 months later...

I am having a very very difficult time deciding on a paint scheme for my wolves. I want something relatively easy and quick to paint. tabletop quality is fine, I am not looking for anything over the top. I have tried the 13th company(codex/fortress grey), the new style(shadow grey) with several other colors for highlights(codex, fortress, adeptus, even used some gold and silver to trim the shoulders and eagle crest). I am currently working with my marines from AoBR. Haven't started on the actual wolf packs yet. I am also considering trying the wolf priest style of black/gold.

I like the way several paint schemes look in this thread. But I just can't seem to get them to look the way I want when I paint them. I do love shadow grey as a color, but my girlfriend is liking an adeptus battlegrey color as a base coat, which I think looks good, but a little drab. I am also not a huge fan of the multi colored shoulder pads that the space wolves use. Def. not a fan of ragnars companys yellow pads.

I guess I'm just posting to 1. bring this back to the top to get more posts and 2. any advice anyone has to help me pick a scheme I like would be great. I know I have to pick a color I like not what you like. But any help would be appreciated.

@ DV8 I want a more blue/purple tone to my SW, would more washes achieve this?? would the washes work over a darker colour like shadow grey?

Here are mine. I've painted a lot of 13th Company, so I did not want to repeat grey armor scheme and went for the "blue school of thought". Also, somehow, I'm not very good at taking pictures :D.

I use a local acrylic brand called EQArte, its about 1.5 USD for 50ccs. The main color is "Petroleo" (Petrol), with some dilutions to make blends, with like 6:1 black, 10:1 and 15:1, being the pure color the highest one.

These bluish greys are funy colors, the brighter the light the greyish they look the darker the light the bluish they look.

Thanks to DV8s and BoW tutorials I did a base, airbushing, codex grey and fortress grey. Then i washed the whole model in Asurman Blue followed by Badab Black. Later on the model got some Devlan Mud and more Badab Black to help "Grime" the model up a little.

All my wolves wear their Great Company insigne on the left shoulder and their pack insigne on the right shoulder. The exhaust nozzles on the packs (round ones on top) are painted with the ground color of the pack insigne as are the knee pads in those with armor that has the separate round knee pads. (Wolves are proud of the colors that eah pack chooses when it is formed.) When they are selected for Wolf Guard, they change from the pack color to the standard WG insignia and colors (they now represent the Wolf Lord, not individual packs.)
