I've been out the loop for a number of years does Australia (more specifically Sydney) still have games days?

Sadly, no mate. GW decided it was too hard/expensive to run the event. A great pity, I only got to one of them. You will find that Conflict is all in-store too, no longer a day out.
Check out wargamerau.com, it is an Australian site that has a list of tournaments by state. Not as focused as B&C, but quite helpful to us Aussies.
In Sydney we have Emperor's Legion in September (great tourney, run by Rod, a great bloke) and Lords of Terra in late July (hoping to go to the Aspirants for this one). You have missed Leviathan, Clash of Titans and a couple of others (Canberra, Central Coast and Newcastle spring to mind).

If at first you don't succeed, then deep-striking is not for you.
I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed man... but I end up doing it anyway

LOT (Lords of Terra) is the 'replacement' for the Grand tourney of old. An independently run event (by two of the better known 40k players in the country). LoT has two events. LoT (primary event) the best of the best. Generally open by invitation only. To qualify requires a podium place in an major tourney (over XX players) in the 12 months prior to Jan 31 (in any state). Run by Marc Croxford and Alex Ozanne (keeper of the National (including NZ) tournament rankings and one of the more veteran tourney organisers in the country).
LoT Aspirants is open to anyone who wants to play in the tourney. Both events use the same missions and scoring criteria. It's held in North Sydney in July each year. My club mates usually go to aspirants. I would go, but it's on a weekend that I'm not available.
Most of the big names in 40k will be playing, and there are quite a few travelling in from interstate for it.

Hah, with the recent outbreak of the swineflu or with states escalating status from "containment" to "sustain". Public gathering might be banned.
Regardless, player run GD equivalent is all fun and games but it won't have FW stands and advanced copies of stuffs, namely the SW codex. And honestly IMO, tournaments aren't something that should be noticed. I play enough of those at gamestores.

Even with free upgrades and made a scoring unit, the Tactical Squad still is the "unwanted stepchild" of the Space Marine army.
if Ragnar gets a new model he will be made of Beard, Cheese and Frostblade.

I was pretty sore over games day getting the axe, but if you look in the back of the white dwarf they have upcoming tournaments around all of australia at least. still a bit of a bummer though.

Make a white power fisted zombie, make sure all the zombie marines are dancing. It'll be thrilling
