Artifactor Space Marines

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I've been working on my Do It Yourself chapter, The Artifactors(formerly known as The Emerald Knights). I'll update this post with any finished squads I have. I also realize that green and gold has been done before (Invaders, as well as at least one other DIY chapter I've seen around here). At least I have a different green then the Invaders! Anyway, on to the pictures! (Click the pictures for larger view)

Death before dishonour, drawing

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/Deathbeforedishonorsmall.jpg

Description

Yet more Artifactor art! I commissioned Mr. Nipples on these boards to draw an Artifactor marine for me, and the end result was nothing short of amazing! This is the small version and even that has loads of details! You can find more of his art here: http://sharpwriter.deviantart.com/

Brother Micah of the Artifactor chapter, drawing

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/Artifactorsmall.jpg

Description

More Artifactor art (my plan is to hire more artists and, in the end, have enough drawings to make a full fledged Artifactor codex :P). The creator of this piece is my good friend Annah. Find more of her art here: http://winterqueen.deviantart.com/

Chapter Master Alexander

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/masteralexander.jpg

Description

The Supreme Commander of all Artifactor forces, Chapter Master Alexander. Master Alexander is armed with the Harbringer, a relic spear that dates back to the days just after the Emperor was enthroned in the Golden Throne. Believing one should be ready for anything, he is also equipped with a plasma pistol and a grenade launcher.

This paintjob is a good example what happens if you rush things, that said, the models have been striped for paint several times so the model was rather worn to begin with (excuses, excuses!). Still, it's something until the new Blood Angels come out (Mmm, conversion goodness!)

This model shows Alexander in his Power Armour, but most of the time he does battle in the ancient relic known as The Excalibur armour. More on this when that model is finished!

Tactical Squad "Sarrus"

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/tacsquad12.jpg

Description

Space Marine tactical squad "Sarrus". These days I paint the battle damage instead of actually cutting into the models. So far it has worked just fine. Models are wet brushed, using foundation paints, normal paints and washes, all from Games Workshop. Still a bit shaky on the extreme highlights but I'm getting there. Done some minor converting, most of the non-tactical marine bits is from the Dark Angels conversion kit box or the new plastic devastator squad box. Those two boxes are great for pimping your normal marines!

Tactical Squad "Sarrus" - Side view

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/tacsquad1.jpg

Description

A side view of tactical squad "Sarrus". Sergeants in the Artifactors have golden helmets. I also painted the skin on my Space Marines brown as I think it fits very nicely with green. There's too few coloured marines out there anyway! :) (Well, all marines can be coloured if I'm not mistaken, since they change the colour of their skin depending on the environment?)

Terminator squad "Sovereign"

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/terminators.jpg

Description

The picture is so, so since the light didn't want to cooperate with me 100%. Still, pretty happy how they turned out. These guys teleport in, then use their storm bolters and heavy flamer to purge the area! In this photo you can also see the water effects I use for some of my bases. Used chestnut ink on the bone instead of any brown washes. Worked pretty well! I recently bought a small drill which I will use to drill out the bolters with.

Devastator squad "Ateus"

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/Devastator.jpg

Description

Four lascannons. Usually I don't field this unit, since it's really expensive and can be avoided by a smart opponent. Still, they have served me well from time to time. Sometimes I place a lascannon in a tactical squads defending objectives. Pew pew!

Reclusiarch "Adryan"

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/reclusiarch.jpg

Description

Artifactor 1st company chaplain, the Reclusiarch Adrian. Made good use of the GW washes on this model! I'll try and make the eye lens more shiny whenever I have the time! :P

Some background:

"Reclusiarch Adrian is the first company chaplain and second in command of the first company. He often commits to battle beside Captain Constantine and his command squad, but since Adrian's tactical awareness rivals that of a Space Marine Captain he is sometimes put in command of smaller strike forces, often drawn from the chapter's battle companies."

Command Squad "Vengeance"

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/command.jpg

Description

Space Marine command squad. Sorry about the shadows, I don't have a light box to take photos in yet so the sun is my stern mistress! We all know that Blood Angels are the masters of bling, but hopefully these guys can give them a run for their money.

Drop pod

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/droppod1.jpg

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/droppod2.jpg

Description

Phew, these things are a pain to paint. You got to paint everything -at least- five times, since it has five sides, and the inside needs to be painted as well. This model was really trying my patience but in the end I persevered and a few days later, one drop pod! Now just don't remind me I have two more of these beasts to paint.

Captain Constantine, 1st company captain

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/Constantine.jpg

Description

To be honest, I wasn't 100% happy with this one, but the more I tried to make it better, the worse it got, so I decided to call it a day and settle with this :P. Lots of bits from the Dark Angels box (including a book attached to the back of the armour, which isn't visible here). This is a "Count As" Lysander, meaning he's got a Master-Crafted thunder hammer, thus the extra bling on the weapon! Constantine is almost always joined by the command squad, and sometimes even the 1st company Reclusiarch Adrian.

"1st Company Captain Constantine is a legend in the Artifactor chapter and have led Space Marine strike forces for many decades. In the campaign of Alpha Oria he was struck down by a vicious Necron lord and would have been placed in a holy Dreadnought would it not for favors owed by the Adeptus Mechanicus. His broken body was sent to Mars and mended and enhanced by their arcane knowledge. His new body, part space marine, part adamantine, can withstand blows that would slay even a mighty Space Marine. But everything has its price. Constantine is now more machine then man, his body tended by techmarines as much as the chapters apothecaries. The complexity of the bionics and adamantine implants are mind puzzling, even for the techmarines, and should one fail completely it is uncertain if they would ever get it working again, at least, not without the aid of the Techpriests of Mars."

Thunderfire cannon and Techmarine Hector

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/Thunderfire_cannon.jpg

Description

Techmarine Hector with his Thunderfire cannon. As you can see I didn't use the white that's usually in the Adeptus Mechanicus symbol, but I think the red/metallic worked just fine. I missed a few highlights on this piece, might go back and try and add some later on. I'm really happy how the metal turned out. Not shiny, but more dark and kind of gritty (Heavy Badab black wash over boltgun metal).

Reclusiarch Adrian drawing

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/Reclusiarch_by_t0bi1.jpg

Description

A good friend of mine did a drawing on my Reclusiarch! If you want to see more of his work, check out his deviantART gallery: http://t0bi1.deviantart.com/

Dreadnought Nicodemus

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/Dreadnought1.jpg

Description

Space marine Dreadnought Nicodemus. This is the dreadnought you get in the Attack on Black Reach set. Although it's slightly lower quality than the other Dreadnoughts I tried to make it look better with some Dreadnought pimpage! I put a High Elf shield on the hull (perhaps coutning as extra armour!) and an advanced communication package on the top, this is from the Aegeis defence line set. Added a few extra purity seals and a smoke launcher then painted lots of sacred text. I think it turned out alright! This is also the first model I've used the Citadel spray gun on.

10th Company champion Felix

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/Felix.jpg

Description

Felix, scout sergeant, 10th company champion and master gunslinger. This is a "Count As" Telion. I'm not much for dual wielding guns, but if anyone can do it, it would be a genetically engineered superhuman with improved reflexes and eye-hand coordination. :) Not -too- happy about the paint job, might have gone a bit overboard with the washes. Live and learn. But he's more then worthy to lead my sniper squad! Took the beret head from an Imperial Guard Catachan Command squad. To make him look a bit beefier I used Space Marine arms for him, but without the shoulder pads.

Constantine, drawing

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/Constantinedrawingsmall.jpg

Description

A drawing of the Artifactors' first company captain, Captain Constantine (you see the actual model in this thread as well). This piece was done by the talented 1mpact on deviantART. Good art, for a very low price, check him out at his deviantART page or his studio page http://StudioColrouphobia.com.

Vindicator "Mercykiller"

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/vindicator.jpg

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/siegeshield.jpg

Description

This model was inspired by the wonderful Legion of the Damned vindicator by juckto (http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=182215&st=0), here's my own version of the skeleton armoured siege shield. Gilded skulls for the Artifactors, since they are the masters of bling, well, right after the Blood Angels of course. Oh, and I really need to find myself a light box. ;)

"The Vindicator Mercykiller was given as a gift to the Artifactors from the Silver Skulls chapter after an Artifactor strike force aided in the recovery of two fallen Silver Skulls dreadnoughts. The Vindicator was repainted in the chapters' colours but the skulls of the siege shield were left alone to honour the machine spirit, as well as the Silver Skulls."

Venerable Dreadnought Thanos

http://www.enharjarna.org/David/venerable.jpg

Description

Former 4th company champion Thanos, now blessed with a Dreadnought sarcophagus. This is one busy model with lots and lots of details. Experimented a bit with the gold by adding lots of wash which resulted in the gold looking more like bronze. I'll probably stick with a thinner layer of wash next time.

Brief Artifactor Fluff!

The Artifactors' main quest in the galaxy is to find and retrieve artifacts from the days of the Emperor and the Heresy. They firmly believe that these ancient artifacts, artifacts created when the Emperor still walked amongst them, will be instrumental in defeating the enemies of man. Unlike the Relictors the Artifactors only retrieve pure and untainted artifacts. If they ever come upon a chaos artifact or an artifact wielded by chaos they will destroy it, no matter how long they have hunted for it.

Artifacts from the era of the Emperor are few and far between and even though the whole chapter is involved in finding these artifacts, only two major artifacts have been found since the founding of the chapter.

These look real nice man, great look you've achieved and that shade of green is great. Highlighting is soo smooth and precise but i think you should do a final, up to almost pure white in places, that would only enhance them further. definately give the gold more shine with the mithril, i'm not a fan of gold too yellowy and i'll say the cruxis need more work they're a bit too clean

Eyes do need to be another colour yellow im thinking & a little more work on the weathering/battle damage wont harm. how long have they been in production and whats next on your desk?

Also, you got any ideas on the chapters badge? can't wait to see more of them, keep on these bro and feed us all some more ideas soon!

Thanks for the replies and the feedback!

I'm afraid the red eyes are here to stay, since I want all eye lenses in the army to stay the same. I will try to make more of an outline around them though, to make them pop out a bit more from the gold. As for weathering, the only one I do is usually around the legs, and a little bit of battle damage. I don't really want to overdo the battle damage, but maybe I'll add a few more scrapes and burns. :P Also, a little mithril silver highlight might not be a bad idea!

The chapter badge is a golden sword on a green background. You can (just barely)see the tactical sergeant carrying this symbol on their should pad. All sergeants have the chapter badge on their shoulder pad, but unfortunately it's not visible on the photos.

Brother 'Ussell, thanks for asking about the chapter, I'll be more then happy to tell you a little more about them.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for the comments once again! I've researched some battle damage, perhaps I can make it better in the future, theredcorsair, as well as some highlights on the gold(mithril silver perhaps?)

Also updated the post with a new picture of my captain, a count as Lysander!

But as soon as their search is done :)

Jokes aside the job on these guy is brill and I think the count-as lysander is better than the real one! Keep up good work

Yep, then they are off to start their own little empire. See ya EMPRAH! ;D And thanks for all the comments everyone, really keeps me going!

Brother Tuditanus: Yeah, those helmets are great for making things a bit more interesting. Hopefully I'll find some use for the other minmax helmets as well. Maybe a few Vanguards or Honour guard!
