How to convert thunderwolves

I have used a lion of chrace for my pre heresy army

If I had had more time I would have made the snout longer and more wolfy but it was for a campaign. I simply covered the body with green stuff and modelled hair.

When you get a look at the Space Wolf codex you will see that in the fluff picture under the army entry shows a space wolf riding a wolf not much larger than the lions.

Some other conversion ideas

1. 2 wulfen on a 40mm base, a good use for old wulfen models, fits the profile relatively well but not the general size of the mount.

2. an attack bike with the gunner replaced by a cc marine, possibly with some kind of lance weapon (nicked from a grey knight?) again fits the statline well and the general profile and as a bonus is a kind of cool sci-fi chariot

3. Use an actual chariot model with a marine as a rider and wolves/re-modelled lions pulling it. Again roughly matches the statline but is now too big.

4. Space wolf biker with some wolves on a 40mm base - technically okay but matches neither the dimensions nor statline especially well.

5. Riding a converted juggernaut, probably the best fit for stat/dimensions and will look damn good if you have the skills for it. Probably the most difficult conversion though.

6. Cut canis off his mount, add another torso. This is what GW wants you to do but you edn up with a sucky looking wolf and a load of spare canis torsos. Plus it costs a fortune.

7. Buy them from foregworld, for the lazy easily the best idea.

Cheers for the replies chaps.

Will be picking up my chariot from either the LGS or GW today at lunch and then home to start hacking and chopping.

@Mjolnir - I'd not considered putting fur all over the lion's body - Only considered extending the stripe down it's back. Would you say that it'd look better shaggy all over?

@Drexler - Glad you approve, am looking forward to how they turn out. I like the idea of truly feral marines riding the wolves (I had an old wulfen model i converted which was like this;

so could look pretty sweet. I think however i'll be keeping mine as power armoured lunatics...however there's always the posibility of bare arms and kilt plaids to consider....although that'd be setting me up to paint tartan again which I swore i'd never doi after hordes...

Brave: Forgeworld is going to make them? That is news to me lol.

Olden: Tartans... NOOOOOOOOO!!!! Never!! did a 15mm scotts army several years back. 250 Scottish Jacobites in kilts was enough to make me puke plaid for a month..

I am in the process of cleaning off my work area from my guard toury army that I finished last week. As soon as its clear I will be starting on my Wolves

I think it's just a nice rumour which is going around...not heard or seen anything otherwise to suggest they will be.

As to tartan...I know...dooming, it just came to mind after thinking about longrider cav (trolls on cows in tartan...so many shades of win!).

As to base size...think I'll be putting then on termie bases if they'll fit or if not then i'll see if I can pick up some of the bike bases...although I'm not keen on them....40k is a game of round bases, whorewammer is for squares

So i have my cats (it made me feel dirty getting elves but they can be got shot of quickly enough) which are soon to be wolkves and I have to say it's a rather nice sprue. A picture for all of your's delectation to come (once my connection works at home rather thn work which seems to be blocking uploads to photobucket through the proxy grrrr);

The bodies of the cats themselves look like they're going to be simple enough to convert as the heads are separate. There are a few points to consider as they have little jangly coins down each side of thier armour which i'd not seen previously but these are ok and can be wolfed up. They also have the base of the reins at the back of the head which I may or may not keep on there. The detail on the armour will be simple enough to fill with plastic putty and then painted over with wolf colours and runic detail.

Additionally there are some nice extra gubbins on the sprue too. Couple of heads which look kinda wolfy and (my favorite bit) there's two lion cloacks without heads which will make good wolf pelts. Again they've got elven jee jaws on them but these'll be easilly chopped off and replaced with teeth and stone charms. Finally....the lion heads have massive chin braids which I know will be useful at some point...

hadn't thought of them. I think the important thing (even asthetically before we get to the bio-mechanics of it) is are they bigger than a marine? If not then like the gobbo wolf rider's wolves they'll not work.

Good spot if they're large enough tho :P

I used this wolf for my conversion.

There are two alternative wolf models from the same company, but they costs almost twice as much.

The conversion isn't finished yet, but I post it for size comparison with a space marine.

Love the PP stuff and think that they're wonderful sculpts, I pondered using argus and wolfing them up Morkai style :D

The issue tho is that they'll not be allowed in tourneys if more than 50% of the mini is non-GW. While for home this'll be fine but it's a dilemma...make an extra set because they look like I want them to or just the one nd use it in all instances.

Not going cycling tonight so I'll be gidddy on glue fumes and platic bits!! Pics to follow in the next 4.5 hours...

I am waiting for 3 of these wolves to be delivered today by the mail. It's making work today go really slow.

Can I clarify something?

THERE ARE NO FORGEWORLD WOLVES.

There probably will NEVER be forgeworld wolves.

This ENTIRE thing started because ONE kid posted this on the first page of this thread:

i think forgeworld might be doing some (i think meaning its pure speculation) if they do ill definatly end up getting them.

Within 2 posts that was turned into an official announcement of forgeworld wolves.

Seriously, do you guys even read these posts?

I understand you're excited but this is how stupid rumors start.

Also, great work fjugin, those are some GREAT conversions. I think we now have something to work with.

The Celtic flair is fine by me, just just as easily filled and replaced by a rune of choice. Still, as stated, they are NOT a cheap option. Though whenever I have had the spare cash and time to go to the hobby shop (since last November) I have picked one up. My intention has been to use them as Fenresian Wolves all along (as Retinue like the old days), as I had no idea until recently that mounted Cav units were to be available. I'm still waiting until I get a Dex in my hands before I decide to field ThunderWolf Cavalry or not. These models (Hordes>Circle of Orobos) may suffice for some, but I would personally want something larger for a mount. Again as I have stated before in another thread, I will wait a little while to see if something in the way of a new resculpt of the standard Wolf models in the GW line or something more ThunderWolf specific is slated for the second wave of SW releases.

I have a question about the 50% gw model rule. So if I mount a space wolf on a non GW wolf mount, but since the wolf is bigger than the Space Marine then it's not tourney legal correct? I'm assuming its based on the mass of the model. Now if I were to add in some more "GW" stuff on the base, would this count toward the overall size of the model (such as dead dark elves, chaos bits, you get the idea) and be sufficient to "LEGALIZE" the model?

this chap however showed more promise...

full conversion without too much greenstuff later tonight i hope

I can't really tell from a pic, but the wolf head looks a bit too small for the lion's body. Also the head is positioned a bit too low. Maybe if you placed it higher up it wouldn't be over-shadowed by the top part of the mane.

Anyway I think it's a very interesting conversion, post more pics when you have more work done!

Personally, I'm going to wait till I hear something from GW, before I do any TWC. They could come with the 2nd wave. So before I get all exited and start spending money on conversions, I'll give GW a chance and see if they can come up with a wolf that is better than the one Canis is on.

He was mounted up - just needed to go have some food (me not the puppy)

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f151/evil-jim/250920091057.jpg?t=1253913439

I'm thinking of adding more hair between the top of the wolf's head and the back of the nape of the neck to make the line a little smoother. On the position of the head - it's mounte

d where the face of the lion was, just a little longer so it appears in the picture to be too low....i'm quite taken with it. Still to do would be detail on the wolf, i think i'm going to eschew reins but put on stirrups for the rider. I'll be adding more detailing to the rider as well...although he's a little static at the moment so the next one will have more done with the legs and position of the head - only wolf torso I could find and the head was already glued. However I'm rather taken with the wolf itself and will be happy to make more. I think I'll need to experiment with how the legs sit before I'm happy with them - definitely an area for improvement.

I was thinking I may just wait until I can get my hands on a box of the new wolves so I can convert the next one to be more wolfish...but then I wouldn't have them for Tuesday and beating up Eldar
