Great work so far on the dread conversion.

On an additional note for those using the allankey scales with GS the great thing about it is the fact that you can get the same results using a small grade key, ideal id your wanting to make a cloak for marine sized models

Hi, just registered to let you know this idea has been soundly nicked for my Alpha-Legion:

It'll just be accents on the Rhinos, Vindicators & Defiler. Thought I'd come say thanks.

Hey, that's cool to share !

I'm glad my idea spread !

@others : thanks for comments.

  • 1 year later...

Back from the deep to show you almost finished right arm.

Finally, I chose to represent a chain fist with buzz saws (click on pictures for full size) :

Melta is magnetized.

Still missing a plate to hide junction between arm and "shoulder" and some gap filling.

realy nice work! my only critics would be that the dragon arms look long to me... I fear it unbalance the model

Thanks.

About arms balance, both are longer than standard dread arms so it's not really unbalanced as you can see on this older picture with an head try (I'm currently resculpting it to make it look like an Asian dragon sculpture) :

Toujours l'armée que tu avais commencé dans ton CDA?

Tu as quand même bien amélioré la technique pour les ecailles....

[sorry for French language mode ON]

@Crevette : Tiens, un frenchy ! Salut Crevette. Sauf que les écailles du Dread ont été faites avant le CdA... Mais sur d'autres trucs, je me sus amélioré.

PS : si tu veux en discuter en français, j'ai un sujet sur le warfo

[sorry for French language mode OFF]

New head :

Global views with new head and arm :

I'm not fan of the mustache but Idon't really know how to sculpt fur without a back support.

Still, I dont find this dragon Asian enough but I did my best to do it.

Any ideas to improve this head ?

Wow, I am really impressed thanks for sharing your work. I can't wait to use the dragon scale idea. I have tons of Allen Wrenches of various size that now have a purpose in life other than taking up space in my tool box.
LOL. May be I'll be the saver of some allen wrenches sellers

I'm near the end of this conversion.

What was done since last post :

  • torso / left arm junction.
  • details on right arm (plate with emblem, cables arrival on shoulder)
  • Head : mustache remade, eyebrows reinforcement, added a lower jaw.

general view :

http://img.over-blog.com/300x300/2/62/28/18/SM-Dread/Dread56.jpg

The look is less "Asiatic" than I wanted but I like it's "You talkin' to me ?" face with that new head a bit leaned.

Closer look :

Details on right arm :

What still to be done before painting :

  • head / torso junction
  • gaps filling with Milliput juice (beware google translated...).
  • basing (ideas welcome...)

this is going to be amazing when painted :(
Thanks, I'll try to do my best for painting.

why the asian dragon head? Why not a euro-dragon head?
Because the theme of my army is Dragons / Samurai and an Asian dragon meet both :cuss

The time and effort that has gone into this is amazing and I was absolutely in love with it.... right up until the point where the dragon's head was added. For me, it just doesn't sit right on the model. The dread just starts to lose its mechanical feel and ends up looking somewhat peculiar. Maybe its just me...

It's not just you.

Someone on an other forum made the same comment. So, I added that :

Note that the dread is now primed and ready to be painted ! ;)

Another PIP update (as always, click on pictures for a larger view)

Nothing finished :

Brown will be darker,

Yellow -> lighter,

scales -> Need to find a way to separate them more.

Head and horns -> only basic colors done.

etc, etc, etc ...

I really do like this, but I think the dragon head takes it to far.

It looks like a magical dragon rather than a dread.

I would remove the head and give it a more traditional sarcophagus, This just reminds me of the never ending story.

Other wise I think this is a fantastic conversion, really inspired and original.

Can not wait to see it complete.

Although the dragon head is nicely sculpted, it looks too silly in my opinion. While I think you have a great idea, I would like to offer up an alternative to the dragon head. Technically, the marine inside is not actually poking his head out of the sarcophagus to look around through the dragon's eyes. He is wired up into the sarcophagus and looking out through the slit in the sarcophagus cover, or wired into the dreadnought's sensors. I think it would benefit from sculpting a raised cover for the sarcophagus instead of an actual head coming out of the cover. I believe you could get the same effect by doing so, and it would look more like a lovingly sculpted cover for an ancient hero's warmachine, rather than an awkward dragon head poking out of the sarcophagus. Not trying to demean your sculpt, which is still nice by the way, I just would like your dread to look as cool as possible!

Thanks for the advices.

I may step back for the head.

You're not alone, guys, to point out the"too much" touch of this head.

It was very fun to sculpt but I'm thinking of a soberer alternative as a scaled plate.

I think I can manage to remove this head without damaging the paint job.
