A "Dragonized" Ironclad Dread from AoBR Dread

What's your plan for the sarcophagus?

It's a great challenge that I plan to try.

I want to put an Asian looking dragon head on it.

Here are my inspiration pictures :

(Rightest picture from Deviant Art, a great pictures source.)

And here is what I did (very WIP) for the moment :

http://img.over-blog.com/300x326/2/62/28/18/SM-Dread/Dread05.jpg http://img.over-blog.com/300x326/2/62/28/18/SM-Dread/Dread06.jpg

This upper head' size covers the sarcophagus front And I plan to do the lower jaw onto it's surface.

It'll be positioned something like this :

For the moment, I just wanted to put the volumes and I plan o work with GS after. But I have great difficulties to work with fresh resin.

That's why I used Milliput instead of GS because It' easier to work on than GS when dried.

I'll try to add horns, teeth, and "mustaches" like on the inspiration pictures.

But I think this is the last thing I'll do because I'm not very confident yet with my sculpting talents.

Honestly I think that "little" head makes it a little goofy looking. If your gonna go with the head coming out of the chest like that, I'd have a bigger head that extends farther down, then have the lower jaw coming from the small panel below the sarcophagus. Or if you want to break Ad Mech tradition and have a head coming from the top of the shoulders! I think that might be cool too, although now you'd have to do something with that scraped sarcophagus.

Good Luck brother!

You may be right on the head size. I think I'm gonna train with it and when finished, I'll see if I try a bigger one or if the finish work is enough to forget the "Disney feel".

... or, I may had big hears to make a "Mickey dread" :D

Thanks for comments, all.

So, some news of this baby.

I didn't like much the close combat arm. Not "dragon" enough !

So, I built another one. Always with dragon in mind, I decided that the additional weapon couldn't be something else than the flame thrower.

http://img.over-blog.com/300x326/2/62/28/18/SM-Dread/Dread16.jpg http://img.over-blog.com/300x326/2/62/28/18/SM-Dread/Dread17.jpg http://img.over-blog.com/300x326/2/62/28/18/SM-Dread/Dread18.jpg

"Fist" was built rolling Milliput in a barrel shape that, once dried, was sculpted with a Dremel.

"Fingers" are made with sprue and "claws" are made with plasticard.

I was wondering if I could add small jacks on the finger to move the claws and that's why claws jut out above fingers.

What do you think ?

Fantastoc work, and really original!!

Personally, I would scrap the dragon head idea, as it is, as unfortunately I've yet to see putting a 'head' on a dreadnought not look goofy. Bad examples are: the current SW dreadnought conversion with a wolfskull, the stegadon headed salamanders dreadnought that floated around etc.

I think what would look great, would either be a similar 'giant marine head/neckbrace' like on the venerable dread, or a flat dragon emblem (like those featured on high elf shields) with a scaly rim to the sarcophogus. Thats just my point of view, but I look at this model, and with the repetetive scale design, it just screams out to me 'keep it simple'.

Keep up the great work!

Loving the work so far, but I have to admit I'm with the "don't use a "head" on the sarcophagus" camp. I think Nurglepuss' idea would probably work best - have a "side on" image of a dragon's head emblazoned on the sarcophagus.

I think the close combat arm also looks brilliant, but yeah, some kind of hydraulic pistons on the "claws" would just finish it off nicely.

Keep up the good work dude - really want to see the finished article!

Thanks for advices, guys.

As I said before, sarcophagus will be the last thing I'll do and I'm not even sure to be a good sculptor enough to achieve the dragon's head idea.

I think I'll give a try and, if it's not too catastrophic, Ill ask your (pertinent) advices with an illustrated result.

By the way, some (few) more work on the arm plating :

http://img.over-blog.com/300x326/2/62/28/18/SM-Dread/Dread19.jpg http://img.over-blog.com/300x326/2/62/28/18/SM-Dread/Dread20.jpg

Still some work to do on plates junction but volumes and general look are here.

I find it more massive like that but must admit I quite love that.

I think it's a good way to represent the +1 side armor of Iron clad.

What do you think ?

Dragon's sons evening news, this is Targol. Good evening. (Yes, in France, it's night ).

So What I did on the arm since last pictures :

  • Cleaned scales plates junction with GS.
  • Added pistons to the to claws with wire and sprue.

Here is the result :

I think I should leave it as is and start to work on the right arm with its seismic hammer that I'll full scratch build.

this is absoloulty amazing i hope a dred sized katana is in its future....the conversion is fantastic

Thanks.

My plan were to make a seismic hammer for right Arm represented by a hammer shaped energetic weapon rather than GW hand that looks like a hammer only in its designers head :) .

At first, I wanted to do a Katana arm but didn't really know how to "count (it) as". My problem is that I don't know how to justify a Katana in a "Wysiwyg" point of view.

The only solution should be to build a "chain katana" to count as chain fist for the ironclad but i read somewhere that chain fist is not as good as seismic hammer in terms of game.

Does someone have an advice to help me ?

Its really a personal choice. I have 2 ironclads, one with a seimic 'claw' and another with a chainfist. Both have taken down vehicles as well as the other. I tend to have the chainfist one go after land raiders though, just for that little added assurance of penetrating. I would say it really depends on what you generally face.

@Rindaris : Thanks, that's the thing I could not remember : chainfist is better on heavy armors. What I want is the most multi-purpose option for a podded close combat dread.

By the way, as my aim with this army is not to win tournaments (should I have chosen loyalists ?) even if I may participate in a few of them, I wonder if look will not gain over playability and may choose the chain katana option even if it less useful against all types of opponents.

Neat idea with the scales. The dragon head should be good when done. The claw hand is bugging me oh so slightly - the third claw (the very bottom one) is too small methinks. Should be the same size as the other two :)

I did bottom claw smaller than other for 2 reasons :

  1. wanted to represent a thumb smaller than other fingers
  2. wanted to avoid "claws muddle" with 3 long claws.

Well, as far as multi-purpose the difference between a chainfist or katana and the seismic weapon really makes no difference. They are both geared towards vehicles and start with Str of 10, so even the seismic weapon has 50-50 odds of damaging a Land Raider. They tear equally through infantry.

So if you are going more for look, maybe getting army building points in tourneys... I'd go for the chain katana. Just make it like a Chainfist but longer and thinner.

Thats my 2 credits anyways.

Very nice work. I really like it. Your scales are simple yet very effective. :tu: For the sarcophagus I agree with the previous post of having a flat dragon emblem bordered by some scales. You could very easily use an Asian inspired dragon for this. I think it would pretty sharp. Can't wait to see more.

Thanks again Rindaris for all these informations that helped a lot.

@AngryJohnny thanks for comment.

So I followed your advices (especially TheTruePhantasm and Rindaris) and went into to chain katana direction.

Here is the blue tacked concept of it :

The whole idea behind a seismic hammer isn't that its a dreadnought sized thunder hammer, though they do look awesome, but rather a device that uses compressed sound waves to pulverize what ever its aimed at (like ultrasound used against kidneys stones for those doctors and standard grade physics students out there who will understand)

  • 2 months later...

Thanks for information about seismic hammer. By the way, I think I'll keep the chain Katana option.

I had a little reflection on the general pose and decided to move its arms away from its body.

http://img.over-blog.com/300x326/2/62/28/18/SM-Dread/Dread33.jpg http://img.over-blog.com/300x326/2/62/28/18/SM-Dread/Dread34.jpg http://img.over-blog.com/300x326/2/62/28/18/SM-Dread/Dread35.jpg http://img.over-blog.com/300x326/2/62/28/18/SM-Dread/Dread36.jpg

I also smoothed its body sides with milliput but feel them empty now.

Some cables and wiring will fill the gap beween body and arm.
