Thunderwolves.. so good but so bad

In short, I think the benefits offered by the Thunderwolf mount to our Wolf Lord is amazing. I can either take him with a Frost Blade or Thunderhammer and Storm Shield and I'm sure he'll look amazing.. except for one problem...

The mount.

I hate the idea of bikes and riding giant wolves into battle when it's 40K years into the future. I think they look stupid (no offense to anyone who don't). So I'm asking you Brothers, what would you have in its stead? Right now, I'm not 100% sure how big the base size is.. although I'm thinking it'll be a 60mm (same size as a Dread).

I actually think it is crazy for a chapter who is feral and loves wolves as we do, to simply NOT take a large slavering, mind controlled beast of fury which would rend the enemy in glory of the wolfy spirit. Plus the entire thought of 40k is quite silly if you want to get technical.

That said,

I'm a huge proponent of count as, so I agree with Seany, convert up some type of vehicle that passes your approval for the image of 40k.

-All terrain vehicle.

-Specialized Rhino

-Maybe a diorama like base of several wulfen wild Space Wolves whose combined power is analogous to a Thunderwolf with rider.

-If you are ok with the wolf without rider then do just that.

The size of the base is 60mm ... at least for Canis, who is the only TWolf at this point.

As for modeling possibilities ... kinda tough.

I like SeanyPrawys idea of an ATV or small quad type vehicle. Glue a whole bucket load of blades in it to represent the rending. Check the modeling forum, I think there are are few quads and trikes in there, could be good inspiration.

Other than that, maybe use a juggernought as a base model, make it look mechanical. More of a mega cyberwolf type deal.

I rather like the idea if 5-6 Wulfen models on one base myself. Either that or you could make your lord with 2-3 wolves on a chain, straining to get lose and rip someone's head off, but that makes wargear a problem.

My opinion is that because the unit type is cavalry, the model should reflect that in some way. I think using bikes is inappropiate, as that means something entirerly different according to the rules. That said, if you're going count as it should be...

1. A dude riding on some sort of mean animal/robotic creature.

2. A really big mean animal/robotic creature.

What about a Wolf Lord with jump pack (to represent the 12" charge and the speedy movement), and a huge pile of dead Chaos Space Marines large enough to represent the size of the Thunderwolf model (Canis Wolfborn)?

The thing to remember is Warhammer 40k is Science Fantasy, not Science Fiction. Space Viking's riding giant wolves into battle against Orcs and Elves is the norm.

If you really want to go a sci-fi route, than i would look at giant robots or battle suits. Maybe some bulked up terminator armor, more Tank than power armor kind of thing.

I've been thinking up some ideas for turning a Bloodcrusher juggernought into a big hybrid bionic wolf creature. that I think makes more sense in 40K. I like the idea of really big wolves, I'm not 100% on the wolves being ridden by Space marines... I just wish Wolf Priest had the thunder wolf option. It would be awesome to have a wolf priest ridding the off-spring of Morkai.

Here is another concept to consider,

Idea is more along the lines of running next to a Thunder Wolf, convert a scout model into a running marine that could keep up with wolves due to the light armor. For the loss of PA a 3+ save could come from putting some armor on the TWM. If your looking for some fluff reasons to not be mounted on the wolf, there ya have it.

Vrox.

agreed! anything that makes our chapter stand out from the rest of the vanilla chapters the better. I'm just grateful for what we have.

When I first heard that C:SW was coming out this year, I said a few things in the Rumors thread.

One of wich was

Thats because Ive been hearing that for the last 7 years....

You get promised a pony for christmas every year for 7 years.... you stop believing after a while you know? Ill believe in this "New Codex" when I have it in my hands, from the LGS, and open it to find pages with actual words in them instead of a blank magazine with Space Wolves on the cover.

. Because wed been hearing C:SW for x-mas! foBut heres another thing I saidr about six years at that point, and it had gotten frankly ridiculous.

But I also said:

I still want that Rending Pony though. *sighs*.

Well, I got cavalry, and they have rending.

So I think thats close enough to count towards my "Bards Tongue" tally.

As for base size etc- Id mount them on a TDA *40mm* base. If you didnt want to do them up as wolf-riders, well theres always a pair of wulfen on a base.... and one could have the SCCW as appropriate, and the other could have the stormshield as appropriate. You might even make them pegged, so you can remove the model to show remaining wounds.

I'm not sure this would work to be honest, as the 'pile' representing the size of the mount, would not actually convey a reason for the wolf lord to have such boosted stats....

One thing no one has considered is a horse... A nice armoured hourse, and instead make the wolflord look meaner, give him the servo harness or similar, with blades/claws attached to represent the stats boost.

I like the idea of the rider standing next to the mount, then you get into the realm of cool things like Salamanders from the lizard man range....

One last idea, which would fit the new theme nicely .... space marines (or terminators, wolfen etc) carrying a shield, with the fwolf lord sat/standing on top....

Or... a chariot....

In 40k cavalry and beasts have exactly the same rules, so you could as well say the unit type is beasts. Just like our wolf packs, and what real wulfen could be like.
