Thunderwolves.. so good but so bad

Just some inspiration for anyone needing it, but how about a cyberwolf based off of a Chaos Juggernaught from the Fantasy range?

That's what I did, and I think it turned out well:

I'm not done with him yet, but I think that the half-flesh, half-machine look works really well.

Yeah, I'm afraid the fur just makes it look like a furry Juggernaut.

What you really need to take care of is the hooves and head. If you can make the legs and head like wolf-like, you've succeded in making a mechanical-wolf to ride as a cavalry.

I agree with Lord Rags. I have always Believed that SW should be riding these giants wolves that roam the plains of Asenhiem. obviously I feel the SW canis model is not big enough. think more the size of the one in the SW artwork ontop of the demon.

What I want to know is how does the mounts rending work with say the lords frost blade

It don't...rending doesn't confer to special weapons taken by those using a t'wolf mount. Curiously it does for those who are just cav....but that's another discussion which has been had at length elsewhere.

I'm in the camp of if we're having wolf cav then make them look as big and nails as possible. This does not include canis who looks like it's eaten a hippo

Picture of marines mounted on Hordes War Wolf

It looks like you placed them on 60mm bases evil, is that correct? I have 3 of those, with 2 in different stages of completion, but I am placing them on 40mm bases. I have also gotten my hands on the elf chariot box and I have started the conversion work on one of the lions to be the mount for my WL. If I can get more work done on the face and tail this evening I will try to post some pics.

Ok, I went home during my lunch break and snapped the following picture. Sorry for it being a bit blurry, I didn't have time to setup a proper area to take the picture and used a phone cam.

While the Hordes wolf is not bad, it's a bit short in the body. The lion is just a little bit taller but has more length in the body. I couldn't locate one of the dire wolves. They are either in my garage or another closet I didn't have time to look through.

Well what about those darned dognaughts that everyone is making that I can't afford to do? Riding one of those, with maybe a few bits and pieces of a thunderwolf left....

that is a really good idea , and is fairly in line with the fluff as well .

A beloved pet that has been entombed in a dognaught so that it can fight along side it's master .

solves the whole ridding a real wolf dilemma for the original poster , and should keep most opponents happy .

that base model being a dread naught is solid core to start with and should be about the right size for the conversion based on what I have seen of the mounted wolf lords so far .

After some thought i went with canis, other models were just not as good, in the quick picture i took he has a hammer, this i can swap out for frost axe as i magnetised the lot of them. He's expensive to buy but after quickly painting the 1st one i can see his potential as a twm or twmwl. ill convert two more take a better pic and post up again.

My idea is to paint them all different, so face hair wolf will all be unique, i don't think ill sculpt out the body yet but that would make the most sense, but the wolf he's on is very impressive and worth it.

Has anyone thought about just using the orboros wolves without riding marines? Perhaps adding extra armor to represent storm shield or some sort of head gear to represent a thunder hammer. Then use the canis model as the TW lord w/mount. I am not a huge fan of marine's riding wolves, but a cybernetic wolf cavalry might be kind of cool.

I think the orboros model looks too small to be a good mount and frankly I haven't seen a marine mounted conversion that really pops yet.

The termie arms really beef him up! (They are termie arms right?). :woot:

Yes its a terminator arm, i magnetised the lot, as in the termi box set and canis to, they all have the tiny magnets that are a pain to put in, so the arms are all interchangeable.

Some of ther terminator box set arms dont have termi shoulder pad markings, which would possibly look better, i'll try and take some more pictures but running three of them with storm shields and frost axe/blade and thunderhammer with wolves will work i think.

Just finished up doing something very similar for mine.

First conversion:

Second conversion:

http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu84/Matrias/IMG_1776.jpg

My arms all magnetized as well - Bolt pistol slots out for a dragon-scale pattern Storm Shield. The second chap becomes a Canis-counts-as pretty easy (with the way I magnetized it, the claws sit better on him then the actual model with Canis' head.

http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu84/Matrias/IMG_1782.jpg

The second conversion is more radical because I wanted to try and change the pose as much as possible. I don't think I have it in me to try and convert Canis a third time. I'm a far better painter then a modeller (terrible, terrible modeler), and he's a pain in the ass to work with. Plus being so expensive doesn't help either. Shame, I'd like to have at least gotten three riders from him.

Now the beer and pretzels gamer in me is punching me in the face for saying this, but I've started running my Storm Chargers as SWs, and I had a similar problem until I had an epiphany:

This bad boy.

Yes, it's still pretty corny, after all Marines riding giant dinosaurs is hardly better than Marines riding giant wolves. But hey, I like that Carnosaur, and it's IMO a better sculpt than Canis.
