Hi, I'm the New Guy

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm SP3CTRAL_R1PP3R, however I also go by Stout, so feel free to use whichever is easier. First off, I am going to come right out with it and mention that I screwed up my user and display name. I did not notice until I verified my email address with this account that I left out the “C” in SP3CTRAL_R1PP3R... so it appears to be SP3TRAL_R1PP3R instead of SP3CTRAL_R1PP3R right now. If a moderator would be willing to change that mistake for me I would be very grateful and promise to be more observant in the future. I do apologize for the little mishap and any inconvenience it may cause.

Moving on to more of about me... I am new to not only this website but also with the game of 40K. This being said, I am still in the process of picking out an army. Though, I have firmly decided to either go with Imperial Guard or Space Marines, so I should be good with being apart of this site. Right now I am leaning a bit more towards Space Marines and the only thing keeping me from a decision is figuring out what chapter I would like to play as. I know I want to go with either a chapter that a Primarch started or go to the other end of the spectrum and create my own. As far as official chapters if anyone has any recommendations on what chapter I should look into and why, that would be most helpful. Right now I just feel kindof overwhelmed and lost with the established chapters. Also if anyone has any tips and tricks to help making a constructing a brand new chapter, I would welcome that knowledge too.

As far other interests apart from 40K, I do enjoy video games on the Xbox 360 and have some experience with table top games for I have played D&D (and other versions of it) here and there. If you want to know anything else, just hit me up with a private message or on the forums. I look forward to meeting people here on B+C and becoming apart of this community, and I can't wait to get started with 40K. Ta-ta for now.

Welcome to the B&C. If you look at the post titled, "Contacting the B&C" there's an email addy in there. Email the admins and they'll fix your name for you.

As to what army you should look into, first and foremost, I would say read some of the background stories. You can find a lot here on the Lexcanium. It's not always a 100%, but it will give you an idea and from there you can find what novels you may want to read. For me, what's kept me in the hobby over rules changes I thought were dumb, over Codex changes that completely stripped my army of over $1000 worth of conversions, rendering the models useless out of Apocalypse (I'm an old Emperor's Children player that used an all sonic army), it's the fluff, cannon (from the codex), Black Library novels, and stuff I've written myself, that's kept me into the game. Asethics and background story is where you should start, in my opinion. Bottom-line: Eventually your codex will get an overhaul, either in this edition or the next and it will hopefully shine again. If not, you can always choose a new army. In the history of 40k, they seem to cycle in and out with units.

From there, look into codices that have playstyles you think you'd like. The Codex: Space Marines will probably be your starting place, and the first suggestion I'd make for a new player. Marines aren't outstanding at anyone thing. They're remarkably average, but shine at being average for what they do. They're an excellent beginner army and are a forgiving one. If you make a mistake, chances are your unit will survive the next turn. As opposed to say the opposite end of the spectrum, such as Tau or Dark Eldar (both are specialist armies that really shine at one given thing and tend to be glass cannons), with whom you make a mistake and your unit is gone.

Hope that helps.

Welcome to the B&C :)

If you need a correction for your name, I would suggest dropping one of the admins of the site. They're the ones with their names in red at the bottom of the main page or can be found using the Members tab beneath the main banner.

As for getting started on your own DIY chapter, I'd suggest having a read of the DIY Guide of the Liber Astartes subforum. Lots of good help in there for the beginner fluff nut <_<

I'd also recommend taking a read of the B&C's own Librarium. It's another fluff source but it has a lot more strict control over editing, which leads to less mistakes and fan fiction in the articles. Be sure to check out the Comprehensive Histories for overviews of the more famous chapters.

Agreed, there are alot of good chapters out there- reading the ones entitled "a comprehensive history" will give you a good feel for the armys fluff. Once you have an idea of what you might be interested, post in the subforum for that army... and Ims ure alot of the regulars will be more than happy to point you in the direction of good stories, army list ideas, and general help with your force.

Welcome to the B+C :cuss.

Glad you decided to join the site, bro! Looks like you have a lot of good reading ahead of you, so don't let all the good insight into 40K here go to waste!

I couldn't agree more with you, Nephilim! Very sound advise!

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for the tips, they really made things much easier for making. I took a look at the DIY Guide for creating your own chapter, It really put things in perspective for how much research, effort, and time it takes to create your own chapter. Also, thanks for the tip to go with Space Marines instead of Imperial Guard, after looking into it I figured that the Space Marines would be easier since I'm new to the game. So after doing some research on some already existing Chapters in the Librarium and the Lexacanium, thanks for directing me to those by the way, I finally settled on Salamanders. So thank you everyone for the warm welcomes and the help, I hope to see you all in the forums.
