Jorre's Blood Angels - The Lord of Death

Hey guys I have been hanging around these forums for the last 6 months. I havn't done a tremendous amount of painting in that time, but I have finaly got a half decent camera to post pic's for you all.

Before you all judge my work the last time I did any painting was when I first started this hobby about 15 years ago. I'm 28 now so i've had a long break, it was 2 edition the last time I played a game, but I should have a battle ready force very soon and I'm really keen to get back into it.

I've only painted 2 squads the first one was the AOBR mini's. I'm fairly happy with the job I did for my first go, but there are some minor details I didnt like about the models like the smurf icons on the shoulds. I modified the Sergent to carry a storm bolter instead also (That was before reading the BA pdf dex and discovering that they cant actually Equip one :censored: Hopefully that will change with the new codex)

Anyway heres the Tactical squad if I can get the image links to work

There isn't much highlighting on any of these mini's, highlighting seems to be beyond me atm, I've read many guides and watched countless videos on painting but I'm never happy with the result when I do it myself. Hopefully I'll get the hang of it soon. They are at least table top quality!

The next squad I did was a 5 man Assault squad. These are actually old lead models from my collection I dug out of a cupboard. They do have the new plastic arms on them though and the GW BA shoulder pads. I put a lot of effort into them and my highlighting is getting a little better, but I'm still not completely happy with it.

This is probably my favourite model so far, I think he's from a old devestator squad.

I should also mention I have not put any company markings on them yet, I will wait for the new codex before I do that, just not sure how things will change when we finnaly get it.

This is my current HQ, I havn't actually painted one myself yet, but this guy will have to do untill I do. My mother actualy painted this for me about 15years ago. As you can see I have a long way to go before I can paint to this standard. Not sure if the poor photography does it justice.

He does detach from the base for game play also.

I have a absolute tonne of new stuff to paint, 10 Forgeworld assault vets, Chaplin dreadnaught, another Tactical squad a devestator squad and a Baal Predator. But I have put them all on hold until I get a sneak peak at the new codex and new minis. I love making my guys look a little different so if we get as much free selection of extra bits like the space wolves did I will be kicking myself if i've already put all this stuff together. So until we hear a little more I am going to be focusing on my Transports, I don't think they will change to much. Hopefully I can have a couple of Rhinos a Razorback and a drop pod or two ready for release.

I started one this week, here is the current progress, I'll post another pic when its finished

On the old Devastator model, it seems you used a Blending technique, judging by the powerfist. It is rather affective in convaying the same thing a highlight does. Also, you could drybrush the black areas with Codex Grey to highlight them. You may want to go to the Gw site, look up the Orcs and Goblins in the Fantasy section. If you see the How to paint Orcs models, it showcases layering, which can lead to highlights rather quickly.

Hope this helps, if not, you could always look up Jawaballs on how to paint space marines.

I can do smaller details like the power fist and chest peaces etc, but I really struggle with black. Also the red power has been a real problem for me to highlight. I have some new Idea's and I have read the Jawaballs tips. For my next squad I will try a few new things. The latest white dwarf has some tips on painting Legion of the damned models so I'm going to try that out next time I have some black to paint.

Hopefully my next squad will be a lot better. I'm really slow at painting though so it might be a while :cuss

You have all the basics down Jorre. Your colors are clean and neat. About the highlights, have you thought about starting with the highlight color as your base coat and then working your way down to the shadows from there? It takes a little time but for me the results are better as the blend seems to come easier and more subtle. Painting seemed to click for me once I started to paint that way. My hand isn't the steadiest so this way I could get the highlights without actually highlighting my guys. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Obey the Emperor.

Yes, and you did a really good job. An army with a carefully painted basic paint job looks better than one with all the bells and whistles poorly done. I really like the look of your army - and that legacy Predator with the yellow headlights in the back of the picture. :P It's cool to have models like that because it shows the history of the Blood Angels. I haven't seen any army (in real life) yet where everyone is equipped with the latest gear, so keeping old gear in a current army makes sense - especially for mankind in 40K where a lot of tech knowledge is lost. :)

Ok its been a long time since I did an update in fact the new codex was not even out yet last time I did a WIP update. I feel my painting has come a long way since I last updated you guys, but I am still struggling to get a red I am happy with, at least in a reasonable time frame.

Anyway he's what I have been doing.

Commander Dante

gallery_48822_4461_101232.jpg

Probably the best paint job I've ever put on a model, but I suspect thats because gold is alot easier for me to paint than red. He's not quite finished I still need to paint the skulls on his axe, belt and legs, oh and attach his jump pack and make his base all pretty. his axe broke off before I even got him out of the blister pack so I had to trim it and pin it so its actually a little bent, but ill have to live with that. I'll post some nicer pics once he's done

My first Baal pred

The tank commander has pulled the storm bolter off the pintle mount and is firing it one handed like a marine should! I made the arm detachable so I could field the model with or without storm bolter. Will be a while before I paint this.

This is what my first assault squad is going to look like just picture them with heads

gallery_48822_4461_9570.jpg

I've made up 10 of these and a sanguinary priest, but I'm really struggling to find the motivation to paint them. I think trying to work on so many guys at once really kills my desire to paint. I'm not entirely happy with the red but its alot better than my previous attemps and I really just want to get the squad done so I can start playing this game :P

Oh and here's a cool idea my mate gave me for painting heads!

gallery_48822_4461_69689.jpg

Last but not least my first librarian, also my first attemps at green stuff, not that impressive really

gallery_48822_4461_638264.jpg

I can't take credit for this model since I stole the idea/pose of someone from this forum, I am sorry but I cant remember who it was or I would give credit to him.

I also have a Razor back and another predator in the production line but no photos yet

If anyone else is having trouble painting red here are some Utube videos I found extremely helpful. I havn't copied everything from this technique cause I think the model ends up to dark for a Blood Angel but it really demonstrates how to paint with really watered down paints well which is something I wasn't really doing before.

I've got a bit of time off atm and a new camera so if I can work out how to use it and get some work done I'll post some more over the next few days

I had a Knee operation about a week ago so all I've been able to do for the last 11 days is Paint play computer games and read the Horus Heresy series. I know I know its a tough life.

Anyway here are some updates on current squad I am working on

gallery_48822_4461_283589.jpg

gallery_48822_4461_290993.jpg

These 2 are a little further down the production line

gallery_48822_4461_432153.jpg

This is the rest of the squad. I have only base coated them though. I usualy split my squads up when im working on them or it takes me to long to get a finished model

gallery_48822_4461_580495.jpg

gallery_48822_4461_420683.jpg

I also filled the shadows in on my assault marine heads might try and finish the heads off today so i can put them on the models. They look a little silly without them

gallery_48822_4461_507377.jpg

Thats it for now. I think the red on my models looks alot better and even though highlighting still sint working for me at least I have some black lines on them now to make them look a little less mono toned

Comments and criticism would be appreciated!

the chalice door on the rhino, you should switch it so that the chalicew points forewards. :D

Yeah I know I didnt realise till way to late now they are staying backwards. I actually finished that Rhino today pics coming soon.

Like others have said, your army really benefits from your clean painting style. The Assault marines look really nice and I'm sure the squad will stand out when you've finished it.

Can't wait to see what you've got ready next.

Just a quick WIP update

Here's the Rhino I started working on about 6 months ago. First tank I have ever done named The Steel Fist.

gallery_48822_4461_290816.jpg

gallery_48822_4461_259806.jpg

It turned out ok in the end, but wow did I learn some lessons painting this! For starters the doors are on backwards! Would look much better if they where facing the other way!

Secondly never ever use thick glugy paint for your first few layers! It will ruin the whole paint job! It took me a long time to get the streaks out of this tank in the end I had to go over the thing with the Air brush it looked so terrible. You can still sorta see it but it will have to do.

Lastley! Tank tracks really really suck to paint when they are attached to the model! paint brushes are just not designed to go around those corners! so in future I will be glueing them on after I have painted them!

And here is a update on the assault squad I have been working on

Time for a update. I have not posted in a while but I have been working on heaps of new stuff, never seems like enough time to do everything though so I have a lot of half finished projects at the moment.

Here is the stuff I have finished would love to hear what you all think about them.

This squad has taken me forever to finish I think I got a little to carried away when the new BA bits came out and I put a little to much detail on them for a regular assault squad. But they are finally finished and destroying the enemies of the Emperor!

My First Razorback

gallery_48822_4461_281648.jpg

I finally got around to painting this Flamestorm Baal aswell. I used the Dragon Red Armybuilder spray for the undercoat on this tank and it seriously cut down my painting time which was just as well because I only had 2 days to get him ready for a tournament!

gallery_48822_4461_68883.jpg

gallery_48822_4461_520597.jpg

I think my tanks would look a lot better if I learned how to paint battle damage, I'm a bit worried about ruining them though, so this will have to do for now
