The Dragons of Porphyra

The Black Watch

Recommended Posts

Hello,

After initially going with a chapter called the Black Watch (hence my name) I got bored of the black colour scheme and went about repainting my entire army in glorious dark purple. This was not easy given the lack of available GW purple paint and my aversion to mixing. You can probably see I took more time with some models than others. Nevertheless, this is the result. Any comments/critique welcome.

Overall shot...

Assault Squad Scylla

Captain Tiberius. Conversion of Shrike. A bit rushed but tbh its not a great model.

Chaplain Kharon. My best mini! Wanted to do this great model justice.

Devastator Squad Poluphemus. 'Converted' the serg to have binoculars and thought it would be cool if one of the ML guys was using his BP instead.

Dreadnought Talos. In keeping with the dragon theme, the more veteran vehicles are adorned with dragon scales.

Razorback for Squad Athos

Redeemer Dragon. Might have overdone the battle damage a bit...

Rhino for Squad Manticore

The sergeants' speeder is complete with go-faster-stripes.

These look great! The purple color scheme is so much more characterful then just plain black.

Ironically enough, I like your captain conversion more then the Chaplain. I feel that is just too monotone and dark for my likings, where as the Captain has contrast and a very striking pose. But then again, to each their own!

The Terminators also have a very well-done look. How'd you get the white looking so pure on their helmets and shoulder pads? Sprayed them separately from the Terminators?

Thanks! Black is a bit boring after a while. I really pleased with how the purple has come out. Especially on Tactical Squad Athos, where I took the time to do several layers of highlighting.

I think the chaplain model is awesome but obviously chaplains are meant to have black armour which limits what you can do with it. I might get another and do it purple to make it even more interesting. With the captain, I wanted jump pack and lightning claws but thats hard to do with the available range of miniatures. I don't love the Shrike model but it turned out ok. Just the paint is a bit thick in places.

Thanks, the termies are one of my least favourite models actually! I black undercoated them believe it or not! I first painted them fortress grey and then did many thin coats of white over the top. I still think they could be whiter though.

happy to see another purple army. My children of Eternity are purple with violet highlighting so yours is more pure purple. Love the Shrike conversion

Thanks. Would love to see pics of your army, there aren't too many purple ones about....

then i looked again and its grown on me, a well painted, well arranged force, i too want a captain with lightning calws, but don't like the shrike model.

i kinda feel bad for the first impression

I generally believe that purple and red are a very bad combination but your somehow make it work very well :)

I think out of the entire army, your vehicles are what really stand out. Great detailing and nice weathering.

I know what you mean so thanks. :D

I really wanted them to be unique and have as much character as the squads so I'm glad you approve.

Hey, this is one of the best purple SM army out there in the universe ! I like your captain, clean and simple, really accurate ;) good job !

Thanks. :)

Thanks for taking a second look! ;)

They're looking great! Purplke is a brilliant colour if you can pull it off!

I like a challenge. ;)

Beautiful and enriching purple. A truly enchanting colour.

:D Wow you are all too kind. But it makes it all worthwhile!

Very nice!

Rare to see marines in purple (other than Emperor's Children) but you've done a great job with them!

I love the scout sniper looking off to one side. Seems like he was lining up a shot and suddenly noticed someone lining up one on him!

The chapter master is great too. Beautiful gold!

Cheers Guys! :)

I am really pleased with the dark purple especially as it's so uncommon.

I was toying with getting Vulkan. Great model, great rules, fits my army perfectly (Salamanders successors). But my main two opponents play Chaos and I think the proliferation of Melta stuff would be a bit over powered. I generally tend to avoid using characters in my lists. I had to get the honour guard in finecast though. I haven't seen many people try to mod them away from Ultra's but it's so easy now. Plus I wanted my Chapter Master to be a big bad Termie. I can use him as a Lysander substitute - perfect with that big hammer.

Yeah I saw someone else do a similar conversion with the Dread arm and wanted to try it. I hate the standard one. At least this one looks like you could clobber someone if needs be.

Yeah I wanted it to be really dark.

Undercoat black, light drybrush of liche purple followed by a leviathan purple wash. This gives the nice purple colour but keeps it dark, removes the drybrush 'effect' and gives a little shine. Then just highlight the edges with successive layers of liche purple mixed with fortress grey.
