Complete list of every named Ultramarine

Recommended Posts

Captain Pythea of the Second Company, Commander of the Watch and Master of the Household.

From "Consequences" in Inferno #44. Apparently he held the post after Agemman took over the 1st but before Sicarius moved up from the 5th.

Brother Jantine, Predator Lascannon gunner of the 4th Company. Killed by a rouge psyker during the Company's operations to put down the planet-wide rebellion on Epsilon Regalis instigated by said psyker.

If the psyker didn't kill him, Capt Idaeus dropping two Thunderhawk's worth of ordnance on top of both of them certainly did.

From "Black Bone Road" in Inferno #22.

Hmmm.......contradicted a little by the mentions of Sicarius getting promoted because Agemman was promoted. I mean I suppose it's possible but where did he come from? Where did he go?

I'm going to assume someone screwed that bit up or it was just ignored in the canon of who has been Captain.

That inconsistency jumped out at me as well.

But since this was written by McNeill and he appears to be ( unfortunately... :D ) the official keeper of the Ultras' fluff, it seems that Pythea "existed." Also, since the story makes it clear that Pythea is the commander of the 2nd:

Uriel realised the leader of the group was none other than Captain Pythea of the Second Company, Commander of the Watch and Master of the Household.

And puts both Masters in the same room:

Captain Pythea, Master of the Household, sat to his left, next to Captain Sicarius, Master of the Marches, who in turn flanked Fennias Maxim, the Master of the Forge. Opposite them sat Captain Ixion, Chief Victualler, Captain Antilochus, Chief of Recruits and the heroic Captain Agemman of the First Company.

I don't think it's inadvertent.

My personal opinion - and I must confess it is driven mainly by the poor regard in which I hold McNeill's plotting skills - is that he didn't want to make Sicarius the "heavy" of the piece. After all, Sicarius is fast eclipsing Agemman as the Ultras' current poster boy. So he created Pythea ( = python = snake = hiss, boo, bad) to take that role. And promptly forgot about him... :P

i would much rather have Agemman as a special character than Sicarius. surely a special character, aside from being interesting variants of an army, is supposed to epitomise its station. this was always true of the Ultramarines special characters; Calgar, Cassius and Tigurius all repersenting a Chapter's officers, religous leaders and mystics quite nicely. the idea of an Ultras Captain getting a look fits the bill, which is why i would have leant towards Agemman as the epitome of an Ultramarine Captain.

plus id like to see him armed with Invictus' Plasma Blaster! :P

Pytheas (Πυθέας), ca. 380 – ca. 310 BC) was a Greek merchant, geographer and explorer from the Greek colony Massilia (today Marseille, France). He made a voyage of exploration to northwestern Europe around 325 BC. He may have travelled around a considerable part of Great Britain, circumnavigating it between 330 and 320 BC. Pytheas is the first person on record to describe the Midnight Sun, the aurora and polar ice, the first to mention the name Britannia and Germanic tribes and the one who introduced the idea of distant "Thule" to the geographic imagination. He may have been the first Mediterranean observer to distinguish between the Germanic and Celtic "barbarian" peoples of northern and western Europe.

Sicarius-The Latin word for dagger and a genus of venomous spiders.

"Cervantes!!??" Helmsman!?

Oh well, here we go again with the clever names....

OK, back to the 5th Ed rule book:

Brother Ultraxes. I guess he should really be Venerable Brother Ultraxes.

Dreadnought who fought alongside Capt Sicarius in the final battle against Ork Warlord Zanzag and his retinue on the walls of Ghosphora. Also part of the Black Reach battle/boxed set.

page 137 of the 5th Ed. rule book

{Now to go throttle the owner of my FLGS until he drops a copy of "Abyss" in my hands.... ^_^ }

I think including the new characters should wait until we have their fluff as well. But anyway, more names! All are from Xenology, printed in 2006. I suggest acquiring it, as it has some interesting insights and things. They are personal testimonies of survivors of the Tyranid assault on Macragge. All are on pg68:

- Graema Nielus, Serf-Obediator, Librarius Olympus, Macragge (note the place; we have the Olympus Library! awesome!)

- Sergeant Agrivanus, 9th Company (this means the 9th, or part of it, was present on the surface at the BoM; they took advice from the 2nd Company that killing synapse creatures is good, but unknown whether they were on the surface as well or in space or what)

- Apothecary Samieles, 5th Company (again, we now know that the 5th company was also on the planet's surface)

I think Sinon is well established, no?

Uriel Ventris' Command Squad:

Uriel Ventris - Captain/Exiled

Pasanius Lysane - Veteran Sergeant/Exiled

Peleus - Company Standard Bearer

Gaius Selenus - Apothecary

Cheiron - 4th Co. Veteran Heavy Weapon Specialist

Itheus - 4th Co. Veteran

Alketas - 4th Co. Veteran

Midas - 4th Co. Veteran

mislabled Marine1 - 4th Co. Veteran

mislabled Marine2 - 4th Co. Veteran

From the "A HISTORY OF THE 4TH COMPANY OF THE ULTRAMARINES" BL article.

(Uriel only brought back 25 members of the 4th Co. alive from the battle of Tarsis Ultra, himself, his Apothecary and the Company Chaplain included. That's some major failure right there.)

Torias Telion: Veteran Scout Sergeant

Antaro Chronus: Tank Commander

Names seen here in a photo of the new Codex

4 posts above you. You're slippin man!

But on that note, why isn't there a Squad Telion in the 10th Company?

I declare grand failure and a pox upon Graham Mcneill for this: In between the books "Warriors Of Ultramar" and "Dead Sky, Black Sun" there is a short story of Uriel's return to Macragge before his exile called "Consequences". He has a Captain Pythea of the 2nd Company in the story. There IS NO CAPTAIN PYTHEA!

Cato Sicarius has been Captain of the 2nd Co. since Agemman was promoted to the 1st Co. right after the Battle Of Macragge! He's STILL the Captain and I'm fairly sure he didn't go on vacation.

This, more than any of the whole Uriel Ventris nonsense, annoys the heck out of me.

Ah, but nowhere else does it say he's a sergeant yet. So :)

Also, since there aren't a set number of squads in the 10th company (although the formation requires 10 units of 10), who's to say his isn't the 11th? We do have plenty of recruiting areas, after all.

Hate to say it Champ, but Uriel did spawn from Graham McNeill's brain, and he is part of the official back-story. So Pythea does exist by those records if we go by that. Hell, Sicarius was at the trials with Pythea at the same time too. So, we have to count him. If we don't count one, why should we not count others, such as Uriel himself? Besides, it is only fair we pay homage to every Ultramarine brother whether we like him or not.

We can ignore him because he CAN'T EXIST.

He's an impossibility.

Sicarius has been 2nd Captain and stopped being the 5th Captain since Agemman was promoted after the Battle Of Macragge (400-ish years ago)! The events in the story "Consequences" happen at the VERY END of the current timeline of the 40k universe. There's no way to explain this away, it's simply wrong.

Well I suppose he could exist, but not as an Ultramarines Captain. All our Captains are well accounted for.

Indeed, hey, why don't we just say the 3d Company Captain died and/ or was unavailable and Sicarius took over for a bit, letting a trusted man in his Company take over the 2nd until the 3rd found itself a new Captain. I dunno, it's the 40K Universe. Absolutely everything can happen. Plausible no, but interesting. I still don't like Pythea's existence either, but he is canon, so he must be included. Problem is that we know too much(more than McNeill)! Captain Ardias was replaced by Mikael Fabian.

I still don't like Pythea's existence either, but he is canon, so he must be included.

Eh. I don't know about that. If it was in the actual Ultramarines Omnibus (which does include some of the short stories that happen between books) I'd sort of agree. But this was just what, an article in Inferno?
